Rating: Summary: Boring from the start! Review: I bought this book when I read the back of it. I was so eager to read this book, but it really started out TERRIBLE! It dragged on forever! The stupidest thing about this book was the glossary of African words. I really don't feel like looking in the back of a novel to find out what "durdur" means in English. I loaned this book to the library, figuring that they would need it more than I did. I would NEVER recommend this stupid thing to ANYONE!!!
Rating: Summary: It is phenomenal!!!!!! Review: This book is an excellent book that lets you sense how Nhamo is feeling. It is hard to understand with all the new words from her culture, but you get the hang of it. Nhamo is treated badly by her outside family, after her mother is killed and her father runs away after he murders a person. When a disease goes around people start getting sick and dying. She is forced to marry a guy at age 12 and runs away. She is all alone except for the spirits of her mother and other people. It is a never put down book. I think you should read it. You would enjoy it!
Rating: Summary: Touching and Thrilling Review: This book is what I have been waiting for .I'm only a pre-teen,but this book is wonderful. It shows a pre-teen girl(such as myself)going through rough times with the help of no one but her ancestors. It also proves that woman can live and survive by themselves.Even though eveyone thinks they need men around to support them.Which I believe is truely false.
Rating: Summary: daring, and a cliff hanger Review: I liked this book because it was really good, and interesting, see I know theese (most of them)languages because I was born in south africa and lived there for most of my life.
Rating: Summary: An Interesting can't-put-down-book Review: Wonderful plot and loveable characters make A Girl Named Diaster a great piece of literature!!!
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down! Review: Nhamo's journey is completely compelling. The story is wonderful, exciting, and intelligent. A must read! Awesome!
Rating: Summary: Definetly one of the BEST books I've ever read! Review: Personally, I don't like giving story summaries, so I won't (even if I do like giving story summaries you wouldn't need mine, judging from the numerous others on this page!) instead, I will give my opinion. In this book you don't get to connect well with the people in it, which is the same case with the blockbuster hit "Armageddon." In the place of connecting with character personalities, there is a lot of historical facts, adventure, and the pains and joys of a girl growing up, and that makes reading this Newberry Honor book well worth your time. That's why I love this book and re-read it not once, not twice, but three times!
Rating: Summary: This book is one of the best books I have ever read. Review: I can see why this book won a medal. 'A girl named Disaster' is a compelling story that makes you feel like YOU are Nhamo, a young african girl fleeing from a village that does not want her. After I read this book, I went around repeating african phrases and words to atound my family.
Rating: Summary: Almost Perfect Review: An extremely well-written book from the author of "The Ear, The Eye and the Arm." Very Creative and full of adventure. One chapter was a bore which made me change my rating from a five to a four, but hey, nothing's perfect.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful magical and enlightening tale. Review: Do not allow the title or the cover of this book decieve you! When I first saw it, I believed it to be another survival story. I do not especially care for survival stories, like "Hatchet" or "Island of the Blue Dolphins". Yet, since it was summer and I had extra time anyway, I decided to give it a try. This book is absolutely magnificent. It gives you background information on African culture and then lets you become a part of Nhamo's life. When you begin to learn her story you pity her and encourage her through the whole book. Her mother was never given "bride money" and her father is a murderer. Her aunt despises her and she is given most of the work to do. Her mother died when she was a child from a leapord attack. Nhamo means "Disaster". Please read this book. You'll be glad you did.
