Besides telling the story of the Gulf War, it also has an exciting plot and events. Once you start reading it, you can't put it down. It's a real page turner.

Rating: Summary: Our best selling Young Adult novel!! Review: Summer 1990 deals with the Gulf War. Everyone has heard of the Gulf War. About half a million Americans actively participated in it. Even the movie "Clueless" mentions Kuwait. But what do we know about the people who were liberated--the Kuwaitis? Firyal Alshalabi, a Kuwaiti author, shows in this exciting novel who the Kuwaitis are and what they went through. Her main character, spoiled thirteen year old Danah, plans on having a great summer in Disney World. But on August 2nd, Iraq invades Kuwait and instead of embarking on an adventure of fun and fantasy, she sneaks back into her country and becomes an eye witness to war. Summer 1990 depicts real people in real situations. It's about love of family and country. The book is a remarkable achievement because Alshalabi presents the Arabic culture and language so that it is understandable for all ages. Summer 1990 should be the Newbery Award Winner for 1999!!!
