Summary: Ok, if a bit juvenile
Review: Not a great book. Not an entirely BAD book, but nothing to go into the Halls of Fame. It reads like an extremely old-fashioned romance novel (which is what it IS, after all), and is simply loaded with cliches and stereotypes (the constant ethnic slurs are particularly offensive to modern readers). I first got hold of this book in a hardcover three-parter with The Story Girl and The Golden Road (which by the way are MUCH better books). When I was younger I thought it was the epitome of fine writing, and the most touching romance ever to be seen. Now it just comes across as eye-rollingly cliched...I mean, a beautiful innocent gifted mute girl, who needs to be Taught In The Ways Of Love by the young, handsome professor? Please. And a lot of the plot was based on just plain stupid superstition. It's a nice piece of fluff, but not fine literature...good for rainy weekends and car trips (not long ones though...as mentioned, it is rather short). Fortunately, it does carry the beautiful flowery descriptions that L. M. Montgomery is so well-known for, so it sails by on that.

Summary: The most enrapturing, faily tale romance of all time!
Review: The is absolutely my favorite romance. Eric, a young schoolmaster, substituting on a whim for a friend in the little town of Linsay, Prince Edward Island, finds an old abandoned orchard. In it, an exquisitly beautiful girl plays the hours away on her violin. No one in Lindsay has ever seen her because she is mute, believes she is ugly, and will not go anywhere outside of her uncle's farm. Will her Kilmeny's love for Eric lead her to overcome her fear of people enough to marry him

Summary: Sweet love story, only two complaints
Review: The love story between Eric Marshall and Kilmeny Gordon is part Victorian romance, part fairy tale. The characters are by turn sweet, noble and funny. The climax is dramatic, with a "love conquers all" - even muteness - theme.

My first complaint is the emphasis on hereditary. It's a Victorian theory that good character and bad character are passed down through the genes. It's a weak link in the story.

My second complaint is with the character of Neil. Montgomery's depiction of him is not only xenophobic and stereotypical, but an outright slur at Italians. He could have been a villain without the ethnic slurs and stereotypes.

Summary: Hauntingly beautiful scenes, but much too short
Review: The scenes in which Eric and Kilmeny spend stolen moments among the lilacs in the twilight are almost hallucinatory. Kilmeny is a beautiful (if not very deep) character who truly is the perfect image to use in front of Montgomery's beautiful descriptions of the atmospheres and scenes of Prince Edward Island. My only problem with this book is that it is simply too short.

Summary: Lovely, but not LM Montgomery at her best!
Review: This book by L.M Montgomery is full of mixed emotions; joy, sadness, curiosity and love. Although this book is beautlifully written and descriptive, it is not one of the best books that L.M Montgomery has written.

Summary: Not so great
Review: This book is very slow and the characters are somewhat drab and predictable. Every author is allowed to have one average book and this is Montgomery's. I had a terrible time trying to finish it. It is well written, as is accustomed with LM Montgomery, but it lacks her usual spark. If you are looking for a novel practically perfect in every way try The Blue Castle--it is a far better romance. You can skip this aspect of Montgomery's collection easily and not miss much.

Summary: Excellent but short
Review: This book was really good, but if your looking for a few day read this isnt it.

Summary: Want romance? Look no further!
Review: This is my all-time favorite book. The imagery and desriptions are superb, and make the characters come to life. I have read this book more times times than I can say, and enjoy it each time. As an avid fan of L.M. Montgomery in general, and the Anne and Emily books in particular, I recommend this book for everyone. This is a must read!

Summary: A Beautiful Book, Well-Written
Review: This is one of my favorite LMM books. Even if you're not a fan of her books, you should read this one. And LMM fans absolutely must read this book. It's about a young rich man named Eric who's never had to work a day in his life. When he takes over the teaching job of a friend, he meets Kilmeny, a beautiful mute girl who knows nothing of the world outside her aunt and uncle's house and property. It's a beautiful book that everyone must read.

Summary: A must read for all L.M. Montgomery fans!!
Review: This is one of the best romances I've ever read. It is about a mute girl, Kilmeny, who is very beautiful. Eric, the substituting schoolmaster, falls in love with her, but she won't marry him because she can't speak. Will Kilmeny's love for Eric overcome her muteness? You'll have to read the book to find out.
