Summary: If this is about friendships, I don't want any!
Review: Steinbeck portrays a pathetic group of acquaintances. An addiction to booze is the motive -with few exceptions- for every kind action. Tortilla Flat is good for a taste of reality, but not one that fills you with conviction to be a better friend.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A Moving Tale
Review: I was very moved by the messages about property and ownership and responsibility. These great friends made a great life in what, by today's standards, is considered extreme poverty.

I cried when I put it down. Your life is what you make of it.

I highly recommend this to everyone.

Summary: Incredible
Review: Steinbecks' Tortilla flats is a thoroughly moving book, when I finished reading it, I re-read it and I still felt that I had to read it a third time, its an absolutely amazing book, Danny, Big Joe Portagee, the Pirate and his dogs, Pilon, Jesus Maria and Pablo are a heart warming bunch of paisanos, its a must read, whatever that is!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A stirring and moving story of Friendship and Comraderie.
Review: John Steinbeck's writing is at its best in this tale of Danny, a paisano, who inherits 2 homes from his grandfather. He rents out one of the homes to one of his friends until the house burns down to the ground. They all move into one of the homes and as time goes by invite more and more people into the home. They all work together and recreate society inside their humble home. A great book.

Summary: Funny-sad
Review: If I weren't so moved by this book, I'd probably say, "Typical Steinbeck". It is so, but what strikes you isn't the fact that it is a typical Steinbeck novel, but that creates a lump in your throat, especially towards the end, when Danny dies in his attempt to conquer the monotony of his own existence.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A bit depressing, but it is Steinbeck after all.
Review: In typical Stienbeck style, the protagonists cruise along happily, living and philosophising. Until the last chapter, that is, when insanity comes a-knockin, death close behind. The barely-earned roof crashes burning down, and the Arthurian adventures of Danny's group come shuddering to a smoking stop among the wreckage. I couldn't reccomend it more.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: You'll judge your friendships differently after this...
Review: Steinbeck explores the bonds that exist between friends as they climb the social ladder that defines their poverty in Tortilla Flat. Life, Love, and Friendship each have a go in the spirited conversations between Danny and his group. Learn the true spirit of unconditional relations.

Summary: Non-Flat Tortilla: put down the nintendo! By Kinji Leslie
Review: I'm a 12-year old kid and I read this book and loved it. It has depth and actual plot unlike video-games and most cartoons. It is a wonderful entertaining novel about small adventures that Danny and his group of friends have. They all live in Danny's house and are a lot like Robin Hood and his gang that steal from the rich and give to the poor. When I think about these people I don't think of dirty poor people, but of noble people. In each chapter they gain something in some strange way which makes the story funny in places. They don't have a goal but ride life the way it comes. You end up swimming in the ocean of this story and it doesn't sting your eyes.

Summary: Great book from a great writer
Review: If you enjoyed books such as Faulkner's AS I LAY DYING or McCrae's CHILDREN'S CORNER, then you'll love TORTILLA FLAT. Tortilla Flat is truly one of Steinbeck's many masterpieces -- funny, touching, and exciting all at once. The novel is about Danny, a paisano from Monterey, his friends, and all of their crazy drunken antics. The stories in Tortilla Flat are charming and hilarious. Some of the best include the tale of Teresina Cortez, who fed her nine children solely tortillas and beans, and the chapter about Sweets Ramirez and her vacuum cleaner. The main characters are lovable too. Who could forget the child-like Pirate, the ingenious Pablo, the kind Jesus Maria, or the sharp Pilon? I would definitely recommend Tortilla Flat to anybody who is not offended by excess alcohol. This is a book that everybody should read!

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: not steinbeck's best
Review: Interesting basis, but the writing is not nearly as good as his later writing. There's not much along the lines of character development. It's a story about freedom, friendship and the burden of property. If you want to read Steinbeck I would recommend "East of Eden."
