Summary: A MUST-READ
Review: "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" is an amazing book. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the human rights(as Malcolm would say) struggle. The only negative point I could see with the book was it was told by Malcolm, while he was undergoing a huge transition, and he agreed with Alex Haley, not to change the older material. This sometimes causes confusion with his later ideas. To best grasp his true and final opinions, I would suggest "Malcolm X Speaks" and "The Last Speeches," both excellent collections.

Summary: Most relevant description of our diverse society
Review: This is a biography written by A. Haley. It provides an insight into the development of a man from criminal to a "player" in legal society. He used his "street smarts" to succeed as a "jail-house" sucess. Once he realized that he could succeed as a religious leader and a political figure, he threatened the system and his church eliminated him. It was a brutal crime, he was asassinated with sawed-off shotguns in front of his wife and family. However, his message - we must all be brothers - was recorded by Alex Haley as the final chapter of this book. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THIS ONE - YOU SHOULD. IF YOU ARE A RACIST, THIS BOOK WILL PROVE YOU WRONG.

Summary: Hits home, hits hard, honest.
Review: Why is the life of a violent black man, who is an American Muslim, such an important one? I didn't realize how much he had to say to me personally. I still miss much of its content, there is so much. I am left, however, with the impression that his personal notes would have added considerable depth and insight, the inclusion of which would have been valuable in this work. Alex Haley said (in the epilogue) that Malcolm was keeping them for a future publication, which, I am left to assume, were never published. Lacking that, he still speaks volumes to all who would inspect the pages!

Summary: All those blinded by The Nation Of Islam must Read this book
Review: In short, it reveals the complexities of a man who has been shunned by the mainstream as a race baiter. He is instead a person who came to grips of his own humanity early and one who entered the Nation of Islam welled up with hatred of all who were not Black and disenfrancised. His life's journey took him from street hoodlum to religous icon, he then came to the point where he became a liability to the Nation because he was, in short blowing thier game. Summary: Brilliant insight into a troubled man's life
Review: Little doubt that Malcom X (Malcolm Little) is one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented men in late 1900 history.
I think it is important to point out that much of what Malcolm X's life was about has been manipulated by both the Nation of Islam AND the various white supremecist groups. To fully appreciate the whole of Malcolm X, one must look at the man's entire life to understand his messages.
Alex Haley does a wonderful job of capturing the story of Malcolm's life. Malcolm dictated the story of his life to Alex Haley just a short time before he was assasinated by members of his own Nation of Islam.
This book illustrates the destructive influence of racism on the young mind. In school, Malcolm Little was an extremely bright young man, but was discouraged from trying to accomplish the ambitious dreams that he had. Essentially, Malcolm X was told that he was never going to amount to anything but a criminal, and that is exactly what he turned out to be. In prison, he converted to Islam, and quickly turned his brilliant mind and oratory skills into making that church a spiritual and political force until his subsequent assasination.
It is wrong to assume that Malcolm X was racist. There was a time when he truly believed that white men were evil, but he quickly changed his opinions while on pilgrimage to Mecca, later in his life. And he more often advocated that black men take more pride in themselves. He never advocated violence, only self-defense.
This book truly shows the life of Malcolm X better than any Spike Lee movie, white supremecist, Louis Farrakhan, Washington politician, or popular rap star ever could. Learn for yourself who the man really was. Your opinions on race relations may be changed forever.

Review: A masterwork. Few books tell such a dramatic story in such
personal, emotional terms. Malcolm X's transformation from
criminal to disciple to leader to martyr is breathtaking. His message of commitment and justice has lost no power in the 30-odd years since Alex Haley captured
his words on paper.

Summary: Courage and honesty in potent form!!
Review: Being a white upper class male, but more importantly being white, it was often difficult to get through the beginning of this book. Malcolms potent rage and resent toward the white man is extreme, and he helps the reader understand why. You'll read his honest thoughts and experiences of opression and racism. Being born with a physical disability I have seen my fair share of prejiduce and bias. I gained incredible strength from reading how a man named Deroit Red evolved from being a dope dealing street hustler into Malcolm X. It was especially rewarding to read about his personal transformation, and how his views changed over the coarse of his life. Malcolm changed the world through his refusal to be silent, and helped uplift and inspire millions. An important piece of history that every American should be required to read. The insight and courage you will gain is profound! A+++++++
