Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Iceberg Review: Iceberg, a Dirk Pitt adventure novel written by Clive Cussler, was one of the most adventurous books I have ever read. This novel had many characters, but the main one is Dirk Pitt. Dirk is a member of the United States Coast Guard and directs the special projects for the United State's National Underwater and Marine Agency, or NUMA for short.
The book starts when the U.S. Coast Guard finds a ship stuck in an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean. They send a message of their findings to NUMA and NUMA sends Dirk Pitt and a doctor in a helicopter to go look at the ship. As the two head back, a black jet plane comes out of nowhere and shoots them down. The doctor dies, but Pitt lives and tries to discover the assassin and why the ship is in the iceberg. As Pitt tries to follow and catch the assassin, he encounters many dangers in Reykjavik and even Disneyland.
Iceberg was an interesting book, but it could have been a little bit longer. I would recommend this book for kids ages twelve and up. If you are interested in reading a short, action-packed book, then Iceberg is the book for you.

It spots a strange shadow in the ice. It turns out a large fishing trawler has somehow become embedded in the ice! Hmm, cool premise (sic), does the book deliver? NO WAY. Written in the early 70's but really something that has all the narrowmindedness of something from the 30s, this potboiler has a James Bondish hero that you can't wait for the bad guys to hurt, sexist and homosexist lingo that is supposed to be amusing but is just gut-plunging nauseating. Insipid dialog, plastic characters, cartoon villains, this one has it all. Save your money
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Entertainingly arrant nonsense! Review: A highly amusing early novel from Cussler which succeeds in providing a few hours of entertainment. Although I prefer his later work, this one was ideal as a plane read whilst waiting in the departure lounge and on the flight itself to Switzerland. The story, despite having some contrived ideas which seemed like a bad TV movie at times, was quite interesting, and as far as Dirk Pitt`s dressing up as a camp gay goes - great stuff! Never mind the politically correct thought police, there needs to be books like this to fill the gap in the market! The idea of using Disneyland as a location towards the last part was inspired, and the Icelandic locations were very authentic indeed. I suspect the Kevlavik scenes might have inspired Tom Clancy in Red Storm Rising! All in all, worth a read. But where was Al Giordino?! Oh well . . .
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: A Story as Cold as Ice. Review: A Story as Cold as Ice. When I read my first Dirk Pitt Adventure book, it had me turning pages like there was no tomorrow. When Cussler made this book, he was thinking of making buck not a book. The new Iceberg is half as thin, and half as good as it should be. The author jumped through the adventure, not telling us in good English what happens. The book starts out great, and has you flipping through pages in wonder. Then the point dulls, and you have to keep on stopping to think: what does he mean? And it only gets even worse. With a book like this, you can correctly predict the ending one hundred pages away. It all starts when a blazing ship melts into an iceberg and is found a year later. Of course, Dirk Pitt is sent to investigate and has a wild time with lots of twists. Unfortunately, to tell anymore would give the story away. Final conclusion: go spend your money on a real book.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: I reccommend reading this great series. Review: All of Cussler's best selling books are first rate! I do like his style of storytelling like Jack Higgins the books are top notch. A true hero for everyone.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: This Iceberg won't leave you cold Review: Although this is an earlier Dirk Pitt adventure, with some of the beloved characters from later works (Rudi Gunn, Hiram Yeager, and of course Al Giordino), Iceberg is still a wonderfully entertaining read. Dirk is drawn into a web of international intrigue as he locates the missing yacht "The Lax" with the ship and its passengers burned to a crisp. The catch, the boat was located in the center of an iceberg. Thus begins Dirk's race against time in trying to thwart the efforts of a secret conglomerate of some of the world's richest men. As with prior and subsequent Dirk Pitt tales, Cussler sends our hero into a number of unescapable situations, only to have Dirk use his brains and brawn to escape to the next unescapable moment. The pace is quick and entertaining. Those who have read some of Cussler's later Pitt adventures may not like this earlier version of Dirk - sexist and crass almost to cartoonish proportions in today's social setting. But you must remember that the book was written in the less politically correct mid-70's, sit back and enjoy a more macho Pitt, especially when in drag.

Review: Based upon Craig Little's passionate and glowing recommendation (see below), I bought the book. It is even better than he described. I loved it! Cussler knows the value of tightly-crafted sentences. Have ordered copies for Christmas presents. Last year it was "Unintended Consequences". Another dynamite read, and also proudly un-PC. If the market is there, happily, someone will fill it
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Ignore Craig-Good Fun Review: Craig has kind of problem with political correctness. Lighten up buddy. These books are for people with a sense of humor even if a degree in English Lit is pinned to their ego
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Good solid Cussler Review: Dirk Pitt, doing his thing. An action packed good beach book. One of Cussler's most misogynistic works, it almost lost me in a couple places where the portrayal of women was too ridiculous. But if you want a quick read with no deep thought, go ahead and enjoy this book. (It's like watching an action movie)
