Rating: Summary: The Year of the Hangman - Historical Fantasy At Its Best: Review: 1777 - The Year of the Hangman, was a time of turmoil and political intrigue. A war had been waged between the mighty British Empire, and the passionate underdogs, the American Colonies... Now, anyone with a whit of sense knows how this conflict really ended, and may be familiar with what really went on in this year. However, let us consider another possibility... What If...? The Patriots were defeated; their ranks and leaders broken and scattered? On this premise, Gary L. Blackwood skillfully constructs a slender novel of great imagination. Creighton Brown, a soft, spoiled British aristocrat is taken in the night and transported to the Americas. Eventually, he finds himself a central pawn in a plot to destroy what remains of the Continental Army. Populating this rich world are characters of all walks of life, including several with familiar names, if not familiar roles. In order to find his place in this New World, Creighton must discover where his loyalties truly lie, and not only if he is a man of conscience, but, indeed, whether he is a man at all... Can this confused young man rise above his own selfish concerns in order to play a major role in the final act of the American Revolution...?

Rating: Summary: The Year of the Hangman Review: Bursting with action and suspense, The Year of the Hangman, by Gary Blackwood, is a teen must-read. In post-revolution America, the year is 1777, and the uprising has been stomped out. The victorious British send legion of troops to smoke out the subversive revolutionaries and keep a tight rein on the newly subdued colonies. Enter Creighton Brown, the main character, an uncontrollable ruffian of a British boy who, since his father's death in the Army has run amock and driven his mother close to distraction. That is, until he is kidnapped and taken to the colonies. From that point, he becomes, among other things, a servant, a spy, a printer's apprentice, and a hero. Throughout his misadventures, Creighton's character changes for the better, while principles that were once plainly black and white dissolve slowly into a shadowy gray. This book is not only for the history minded, but for anyone who sometimes contemplates what could have happened. With colorful characters and an artfully woven plot, The Year of the Hangman will be a delightful read.
Rating: Summary: The Year of the Hangman Review: I am a middle school librarian who enjoys reading historical fiction. While this novel was well written (and the book jacket did state it was a alternative history of our revolution) I found it very confusing. I'm concerned some students may believe this book is, like other historical novels they've read, based upon fact, when it is not. This could lead those not familiar with our past to believe erroneous facts about American history (i.e. Jefferson lost his family to drowning; Franklin died in New Orleans; Benedict Arnold was not a traitor).
Rating: Summary: mussings of a madwoman (not really.) Review: In year of the hangman a spoiled and haughty rich boy from upper class England gets sent to live with his uncle in North Carolina. He feels as if he has been exiled to the wasteland, but if that were not bad enough, when he arrives in North Carolina he is told that they will be moving to Florida where his uncle will be the new governor. Now you might be thinking "Yeah Florida! Sun and sand and margaritas." But you have to remember that back then Florida was a complete wilderness. So obviously he's not too happy about it. But that's all I'm going to say because I don't want to give away the ending
Rating: Summary: an ok book Review: The English general expects the spoiled yet loyal Creighton, a Brit, to spy on the legendary printer, Benjamin Franklin, but as battles unfold and falsehoods are exposed, Creighton must decide where his loyalties lay... a choice that could determine the fate of a nation. Even though I have not read many historical fiction books, The Year of the Hangman is the best historical fiction book I have ever read.
The story begins with a troublesome boy named Creighton. He lives with his mother, and has a gambling problem. One day, when he is walking home from a late night adventure, a strange group of people kidnap him. When he finds out that his mother has sent him to live with his uncle in the colonies, he is furious. The ship is attacked by Americans, and Creighton is held captive. Creighton is supposed to be spying on Benjamin Franklin and his printing press, but when things unfold, he has to decide where his loyalties lie. This book is an intriguing historical fiction. You will not be able to put this book down and will be reading late into the night.
Gary Blackwood does a magnificent job on making the book exciting and brain working. He molds the characters perfectly to make them interesting, but completely believable. Gary Blackwood has also written The Shakespeare Stealer. I would recommend this book to kids who like adventure, action, and mystery all in one book.

Rating: Summary: The Year of the Hangman Review: The Year of the Hangman By: Gary Blackwood ***** The Year of the Hangman took place back when the thirteen colonies. Creighton was a fifteen year old boy who was kidnapped and brought to the American colonies. He comes to the American colonies and becomes a political unrest. On the way he had a mattress with no pillow and no blanket. He had to stay in a chamber with very little food. When they were out at the ocean the people who kidnapped let him out so he could have some fresh air. Then he got to talk to the captain that kidnapped him. He got a letter from his mom and it said that his mom let them take him to be with his father. One of the strengths of the book is it had a lot of history and I like history when there is a war. I also like when he ripped the paper up and he tried to throw it out the window. One of the weaknesses was the confusing start of the book when they were hanging all of the people. I would recommend it to people who like war and like to listen about history.
