Rating: Summary: Memoirs of a Bookbat is the story of oppression. Review: In the Memoirs of a Bookbat is a detailed description of a young girl forced to be someone she is not. However, I think one major point seem to gloss over is the fact that Harper ios forced to move around all th etime she has no stable force in her life. Everything she has is kept in a hidden box in her shoebox on wheels. I think it also deals with her parent's (and people in general) dependancy on FACE (and other groups) as a life support system. However the librarian needs to understand if the story were about a minority group then it would be a huge oxymoron. And the examples he uses are sad and digusting. To cmpare the usage fo live being to test cosmetics fopr people's own vanity is sick and wrong and has nothing to do with protecting women's rights! And the prevention of AIDS is a very good thing! How could one say that?!?! Pergaps he should not be reading educated literature but go back tp reading Ruch Limbaugh.
Rating: Summary: Reveiw Of A Extraordinary Bookbat Review: Memoirs of a Bookbat is a really great book. It has good morals and characterization. Harper, the main character, and Gray, her best friend, are nice people you can see as being your own friends. This book is primarily against book censorship, but although this censorship is represented through religion it is not a book against religion. It's a book for anyone who likes to excersize their freedom of speech, and most of all, for anyone who's a lover of the written language.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: Memoirs of a Bookbat is one of the best books I ever read. The language is realistic, with phrases people really use. It's got a preety simple vocabulary, but it creates stunningly beautiful images with the words it does use. The book centers around Harper, a girl with book-banning religous fanatics for parents. The book is against censorship; but i think that it's more about having an open mind than anything else.
Rating: Summary: A haunting narrative with vital questions Review: Religion, adolescence, and Briar Rabbit? Intriguing and thought provoking, this novel is without a doubt the pinnacle of what religion can do if taken to the extreme. Harper doesn't want the past of her parents to come back but at what price are they all happy? As religion takes a firm grip on her life she is slammed with censorship and her beloved books are deemed satanic. Her references to fiction and books made me think twice about the depth of her fantasy world. Writing to authors seems the whimsical thoughts of children and she does in fact view much of her life through a child's eyes. Dealing with the theory of evolution and sin Harper is torn between two fantasy worlds, her parents and her own. Dragged by her parents on their "quest" she encounters an ally in her sanctuary and finds grounds she never knew existed. Only read this book with an open mind, you will view religion more diffrently than you ever thought possible.
Rating: Summary: an eye opener and mind bender all in one Review: This book is great! Opens your eyes to a difficult situation, but allows you to make your own opinion. Makes you think about how deep your religion affects your every decision, everything from the clothes you wear to the material you read! I happened to read this when I was in a somewhat similar position and this really helped! My stepsisters are now living in the identical place, though I have silently placed a copy into their possession! Get your copy while you can for this truly may become one of the "banned books".
Rating: Summary: Very Nice Review: This book is very interesting, and the characters are well developed. The only problem is that the story is hrd to follow sometimes
Rating: Summary: Chills Review: This book made me shiver. It gave me chills and maybe even will give me nightmares. Yet I loved it! It was so powerful and so moving, to think that people like that can exist in this world. I was never afraid of censorship, but now it will always be in the back of my head. I really reccomend this book.
Rating: Summary: Very good book. Review: This book seems very realistic: Lasky describes Harper exactly the way a normal, 14 year old girl my feel. The only question I have about this book is: is Delores Macuccho a real author? That thought has been bugging me or ages.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book, a must-read! Review: This book, as I said, is absolutely wonderful! However, it is not exactly meant for younger children. I rate it 5 stars because it made me open my mind. I am 14 myself, so I felt very close to the main character. This is a funny, touching, and great book.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: To all fellow bookworms-- you must change your name. Memoirs of a Bookbat is the most amazingly thought-provoking book I have ever read. A teacher of mine told me to, and I did. IT WAS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ. Read it. Read it now, and enjoy.
