Rating: Summary: A book I read in Modern Novels Review: "Breaking Rank" is about two characters from two different worlds. The Clan is a group of people who have never participate in school and don't care about anything. The Clan is always dressed in black with beads braided in their hair. Thomas (Baby) is a member of the Clan. He took a test to see how smart he really was and found out that he has a chance to be in honor classes. He decides he wants to be in the classes, but he knows this will be against the Clan. Casey, a smart girl already in the honors program is asked to be Baby's tutor. Casey wants to help Baby because if there is any chance for a Clan member to do well, he needs a good mentor. Casey told her parents about the idea of her helping a Clan member. Casey's mother asked, "Do you know anything about his character?" This question made Casey think. Casey's father agreed with what Casey decided. Casey showed Baby around to the different classes and helped him find his way. After school and at Casey's house she would help Baby with his homework. As time passed the relationship grew, too. When the Clan finally found out about Baby taking honor classes they disowned him and felt like he went against the rules. Baby's brother Lenny asked, "What would suddenly make them put you in honors classes?" Baby said," Maybe they thought I belonged there." This brought the clash between two worlds together even more. The relationship between Casey and Baby grew stronger everyday they were together. Casey was now able to see Baby as a person and not a just a Clan member. Casey was attracted to Baby, and Baby became attracted to Casey. Baby's problem's now became Casey's problems. The differences between them made others feel angry and disappointed. The Clan members began to fight with non Clan members outside of school. After this happened things became harder but easier. Casey and Baby would still study after school and help each other out. They began to deal with there differences. I would give this book three out of five stars. The reason for this is because I think this book is a lot like "Romeo and Juliet." There are two different worlds that come together and don't see eye to eye. Casey and Baby form a relationship that breaks others apart. I think this book is practical; you can relate to what happens. I would recommend it to others if they want to read something realistic and fascinating.
Rating: Summary: Who are we, really? Review: Are we what others say we are? Are we even what *we* say we are?Everyone in town is afraid of Baby. They are afraid of all the guys in the Clan. The guys in the Clan wear only black. They never speak where others can hear them. They have strange hairstyles and wear odd symbols. Surely they are dangerous people. Surely they are involved in drugs and commit crimes. Surely they can't be trusted. Surely everyone has reason to hate and fear the Clan. And that's why big trouble erupts when Baby breaks a Clan rule and takes a school achievement test. He's moved from Special Ed to Honors clases, and Casey is asked to mentor him. Casey is the popular girl, the girl who likes to be needed. She wants to help Baby. She has no idea how much she's going to learn from her relationship with Baby, or how much it's going to cost them, their families, and their community. This book is about perceptions and expectations. There is so much more to Baby and the Clan than anyone is willing (or, to be fair, has been allowed) to see. Through Baby's and Casey's eyes, the reader is made to realize that when we look only at the surface of people, we see so very little. We are also confronted with the fear we have of others who are different from us, and of how poorly so many of us cope with this fear. And we are shown how rewarding it can be when we dare to look past our preconceptions and open ourselves to others. This is a powerful and moving story, and a reminder of how necessary it is that we don't take things at face value. And it's a reminder that change doesn't come easily. It's a book of power, a book to make you think. It's definitely a book to be shared and discussed.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book for teenagers everywhere Review: As a student I think Breaking Rank really got the attention of the reader. It relates to high school at a very real level. The way that "the Cribs" have there stereotypical idea of all the Clan members is very true in high school, maybe not that a group of people is exactly like the clan but most people stereotype groups of people before they get to met them and breaking rank shows that very well. The only thing I would have to disagree with about the book is the language the characters us. Teens tat are in high school us a lot more vulgar language than "darn." Other than that I think every English class should read this book.
Rating: Summary: A Exciting Book! Review: Breaking Rank was a very good book. It was interesting and very exciting right till the end. It had alot of Symbolism and showed alot about how people act when others are just a little different. It showed how once you get to know someone you could become friends with them or even more. The end of Breaking Rank was a little disapointing to me because the whole book had so much going on and when they end it the way they did it just killed the book a little bit. It wasnt the ending I was hoping for, and that is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because of the ending. Besides the end of the book which I didnt prefer it was an excellent book and is a great book to read in schools.
Rating: Summary: Breaking Rank Was Excellent Review: Breaking Rank was an excellent book, and I would recommend it to anyone. It teaches students about stereotypes. The clan really never did anything to harm anyone, but people still didn't like them. Until a girl steeped in. I feel all students would benefit from reading this book. I myself am a student, and I learned a lot from this book. Stereotypes really hurt people, and this book just shows some of its effects. This book reminded me of my favorite play Romeo & Juliet.
Rating: Summary: Kristens Review Review: I feel that i could sit and read this book thousands of times! I loved reading it and just couldnt put it down! The characters in this book reminds me of the people and groups in my school. Sometimes kids can be so sterotypical and judge people without even getting to know them, just because of the way that they look. I normally hate reading books but i didnt mind reading this one because i was acually able to relate this to my life in various ways concidering i am i high school student. Im sure that if you choose to read this book you will love it as much as i did!
Rating: Summary: A Powerful Story Review: I feel that this is a powerful novel about the reality of human realtionships. The characters were drawn with truth, and were very sympathetic. The dialogue was realistic enough that I forgot I was reading a book and was surprised to look up and find myself at home. They sounded like the people I know, who are not stupid, but who are very deserving of respect. The Clan was deeply frightening, not because of physical violence, but because of psychological violence. I can't think of anything that frightens me more or makes me more sick inside than when the people you love and trust not only put their own interests before you, but do not protect you. Instead of loving you, they use you to strengthen their own worlds, not even caring about what it may do to you. The cold love of the Clan was deeply disturbing to me. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in realtionships between people, in self-truth, and in standing up for the right thing. It is about people who just want to be normal and happy, something that is a rare accomplishment in this world, where people care more about themselves than they do about caring for the other person.
