Rating: Summary: A very interesting sequel with a GREAT ending! Review: Without a doubt "The Golden Compass" is my favorite book but "The Subtle Knife" didn't quite live up to my expectations. It doesn't have that deeply layered plot like "The Golden Compass" had. The new world that Lyra enters is intersting, with its Specters and the way "kids rule" and all, but there's something lacking. But the new character, Will who's from our world, adds a new twist to things and I had a feeling from the begining who his father was. "The Subtle Knife" does answer some things from "The Golden Compass", like what Dust, or Shadows as it's called in our world, really is. At some points the story can be a little slow but the pace picks up and it grabs your attention. Truthfully, I tried to read as slow as possible to make it longer but soon gave in and finished it in 2 days. It really is a good book and I like it. I'm anxiously awaiting book three of His Dark Materials. I've heard Mr. Pul! lman's next book is called "Clockwork" but I'm not positive as to whether or not it has to do with this trilogy (when I saw the title listed it didn't have "His Dark Materials; Book 3", written after it as the other books did). Anyway, that isn't out yet. Mr. Pullman, I don't think I can wait any longer! I want to know how this story ends! AND WHAT HAPPENED TO LYRA!!!!
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT!!! ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT THRILLER!! Review: Phillip Pulman creates a world with his first book "The Golden Compass" letting you become allies with Lyra and her constantly changing deamon. In "The Subtle Knife" you see both the courageous side and chidlike ambitions of this young girl, and watch how she enters new and exciting worlds with her new found friend Will. The two children having been given their own separate yet connected missions travel through many worlds filled with witches, angels, and specters. Towards the end of the book emotions intensify and Pulman leaves you understanding a little more that what you stared with but leaving much for the next book. Great book I highly reccommend it to anyone who likes Madeline L'Engle, Tamora Pierce, Lord Alexander! EXCITED FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!!
Rating: Summary: The compelling sequel to The Golden Compass! Review: This book is a must for those who has gotten hooked on "His Dark Materials". However, despite the continuing wonderful writing, I'm afraid this book lacks some charm and magic that I saw in the first book. The words just doesn't give me that special atmosphere and plot feel I got from the first book. The main idea is revealed as the plot thickens. Some maybe offended by these religious remarks, yet most would read on, wondering what will happen. After all, it is just a book. I must warn you, this is SUCH a cliffhanger, I am desperate for the next book. "His dark Materials" is really a masterpiece, and I thank Phillip Pullman for letting bookworms like me, have something to do. Quite interesting, this book is good, not great......but still sooo worth it. Note: There was a glimpse of these books in an episode of "Millenium".
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, but how can Pullman end it this way? Review: This is a jewel in the world of "childrens" fantasy and works on many levels so it keeps adults engaged, too. However, Pullman obviously ends it at a point where you have to buy the third book to find out what happens! This is a cheap shot - the series is so well-written that I would have bought the third book anyway - leaving the ending so unresolved is, I think, unfair to his readers. The religious aspect is refreshing - it's a real change to hear someone actually say that God (or Authority) is responsible for so much of the misery in the world (just look at the wars in the Middle East for verification of this point of view). Pullman is a brave, bold voice in the usually sanitized world of children's fiction - good for him for sticking his neck out and making us all a little uncomfortable.
Rating: Summary: The BEST, and I mean BEST book I've ever read before! Review: I've read 7 books of fantasy before. 5 of them were the Chronicles of Narnia. But I always went to a different subject book after I read them. Not now. It's my introduction into fantasy, and shows I'm a fantasy lover. This book isn't as boring as other books. It never has a boring moment. Just when you think nothing will happen, something does happen, and it's really thrilling. I recommend this book to every person who loves big adventures. It's GREAT!
Rating: Summary: Terrific. Better then The Golden Compass! Review: This is a terrific book for readers ages 10-14. It captures the imagination and keeps the reader turning the pages. It has good vocabulary that challenges the mind but is not too difficult. I thought it was an interesting, well-crafted, masterpiece of children's literature.
Rating: Summary: When is book 3 coming out??!! I've waited forvever... Review: This book was thrilling and jammed -packed with action. Each chapter brought a new twist that compelled me to keep on reading. ( I must of devoured the book in a few hours.) I have no complaints except this one- Will someone please tell me when the 3rd book will be out? I've searched every bookstore I know of but it has been a difficult task when Mr. Pullman won't tell anyone what the name of his newly acclaimed masterpiece is and when it will finally appear in print. If anyone knows- PLEASE TELL ME!
Rating: Summary: This is a book for a peson who wants a long book ,an A+++++! Review: This book grips you from the very beginning. The descriptions are excellent, and if you liked The Golden Compass, this is the book for you. It equals the thrill of any book. It's brilliant!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: Philip Pullman's novel, The Subtle Knife, is a spectacular and immensely clever book. The second in a trilogy beginning with The Golden Compass, it builds to an incredible climax. Although some critics have classified it as a simple children's series, it contains tantalizing moral complexities which beg for consideration. Many of the other readers' reviews contest the appropriateness of setting the heroine, Lyra, and her allies against the powers of the "Authority" or God. In one scene, a witch relates the horror she feels after a conversation with Lord Asriel, Lyra's father, "He opened my eyes. He showed me things I had never seen, cruelties and horrors all committed in the name of the Authority, all designed to destroy the joys and the truthfulness of life." How many times has this been true in our world, in reality, not fantasy? For those of you aghast at Pullman's creative turns, this is something to ponder.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, With a Capital W Review: This book is good ,there is no doubt about it. This book will amaze and delight you, althogh you you have to be slightly cofused and shocked about the religios views.
