Rating: Summary: One of the very best! Review: I have sent copies of this book to many, many friends. They were all as enthralled as I was. Before you settle down to read it, make sure the phone is off the hook, you don't have to go to work, and you don't have to go anywhere, because you won't be able to put it down until the very last page. My very highest recommendation
Rating: Summary: BEST YET Review: TO THE READER IN NEW YORK WHO NEVER FINISHED THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT WAS"TOO GRAPHIC AND DEPRESSING". ALL I CAN SAY IS YOU CHEATED YOURSELF OUT OF A VERY GOOD READ. HISTORY IS BRUTAL AND GRAPHIC AND THE REALITY OF IT MAKES IT ALL THE MORE AWE INSPIRING THAT PEOPLE SURVIVED THESE THINGS. MARY IS AN INSPIRATION. I HAVE READ THIS BOOK A COUPLE OF TIMES AND HOPEFULLY MY DAUGHTER WILL PICK IT UP IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS. I KNOW SHE WILL ENJOY IT AS MUCH AS I DID.
Rating: Summary: Truly inspiring! Review: As a descendent of Mary Ingels, I grew up with her story, but didn't truly appreciate it until Thom put it into words. Her strong sense of family continues to inspire me. I rearead the book whenever I start feeling sorry for myself!
Rating: Summary: This was a very good book! Review: Good can't even begin to describe this book! How about phenominal? This is one of my personal favorites. I love everything about it! I first picked it up when I was ten and was horrified with the beginning parts of the book. Years later I picked it up and finished it in one day. This is such an amazing book and I would recommend it to anyone who loves adventure stories. Thank you Grandma for lending me this book, but I don't think you're going to get it back!
Rating: Summary: If you like true life adventures, then this book is for you! Review: I first read this book when I was twelve. I have since read it at least five more times. I cannot believe the courage that Mary Ingles had to make her journey down the river to her home. This is a great book for the human spirit.
Rating: Summary: This was the book I was looking for! Review: I wanted to read a meaningfull, quality book and I found it in Follow the River. Once you get through the graphic beginng, it's an adventure you can't put down. When I finished, I gave it to my husband who hasn't read a novel in 20 years. We were both impressed by the courage and fortitude of Mary Ingals. It is a well written and truely amazing story of human will. It's been 4 months since we read the book and we still discuss it often. We will forever remind each other that whatever our hardship, it doesn't compare to the life of Mary Ingals.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't finish it - too graphic and depressing. Review: Within the first seventy or eighty pages or so of this four hundred page novel, several defenseless people were brutaly murdered and scalped, an innocent baby had its brains bashed out, a man was beheaded, and two men were burned alive. True, it's historically accurate, but you call gory reading like this good literature? I started this hoping for an exciting read (I like adventure stories about women in colonial and pioneer times) but all I got was a death-filled, morbid, made-for-tv movie-like melodrama. I wasn't too surprised to hear this was made into a tv movie. By page seventy or eighty, I had put this book down - I just couldn't read any more - it was just too disturbing.
Rating: Summary: This is a book you don't forget Review: This book is one of the best historical novels that I have read. You feel all the emotions with Mary Ingalls and are with her every step of the way home. I read this book years ago when it first came out and haven't forgotten it. I am ordering it again and this time I'll keep it.
Rating: Summary: Follow the River got me hooked on history! Review: I have read many, many books in my lifetime, but never have any of them moved me like Follow the River. I read the entire book in two days, stopping only when I had to. Reading this book has me hooked on history, but I've yet to find one too compare to it.
Rating: Summary: On my list of TOP 10's! Review: This is a can't put down book from page 1! Such an excellent recount of what it must have been like for Mary and the difficult decision(s) she had to make along her journey, not to mention the physical hardships she had to deal with. I felt like I was right there with her every step of the way. Thom is excellent at setting the scenes and making the reader feel a part of this book. I have recommended this book to many friends.
