Rating: Summary: the character of Charlie Review: It's interesting to me (and reading these other reviews only confirms this) that "Perks" is one of those books that doesn't really have an age demographic. Is it supposed to be read by 13 year olds or college freshmen or 40 year olds or what? So I asked myself "What makes that possible?" And in my mind, it appeals to such a great age range because of the character. Charlie is so fascinating, and so strangely real...after I read the book, I felt like I actually knew this person, like I might bump into him at a party. Reminds me of being in the eighth grade and reading "The Diary of Anne Frank", and feeling like Anne was my best friend in the world... no one could understand me like Anne could. What other characters give you that feeling, that feeling that you've met them before, they'e so real? Rabbit Angstrom, Holden Caulfield of course, call me sick but I personally feel that way about Humbert Humbert...I don't know. Does anyone get what I mean? I'd be curious to see if others agree or disagree: that Charlie is one of the most beautiful, fully realized, fully human characters to hit a bookstore in...I don't know; you all tell me.
Rating: Summary: COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN Review: This book is the first book i've read since like the 6th grade and I coudln't put it down. He explain what most teenagers go through- but they dont know how to express it ina way that actually make grown-ups listen to you make what your saying not something a dumb teenager would say- but something real that is hapening in your life and has a dramatic effect on. I would recoment this book to anyone who knows what its like to be a teenager.
Rating: Summary: Its good Review: I haven't read the entire thing yet, but from what I have read it is amazing. I haven't read a book this good for ages, it seems like.
Rating: Summary: Great Read Review: I thought the book was great but the kid was rather naive. He was fifteen years old and had no clue of the environment surrounding him. He is a follower instead of a leader and seemed to not have a mind of his own. Charlie had too much dependance on people. From the beginning, I could see the emotional problems. I understand that at that age people go through very tough times, but it seems as if every other page he was dealing with an issue that caused him to cry. I got sick of his crying all the time and his dependance. Overlooking these aspects, the book was very deep in a different kind of way. If one was just to read it, they would just think of it as any other book. However, there are so many emotional issues within and it is very powerful. I really enjoyed the book and will read it again and again and I would recommend it to everyone!
Rating: Summary: LOVED IT! Review: I am a 25-year-old 9th grade English teacher. A member of the "MTV generation," I saw this book advertised and I HAD to have it. I could not put it down. I felt like I, or anyone I know, could have told this story. I felt like Charlie wrote his letters to me. I loved Charlie's voice, loved his honesty. I'm still unsure as to how I feel about the ending. I think I have to read it again . . . and again . . . and again . . . and again . . . . I MUST teach this novel!
Rating: Summary: I can Relate Review: Although I have not yet encountered drugs or parties I have been through ups and downs about being a teenager. i have some problems at home. When i read this book I could relate so much to it. I was exteremely impressed by the fact that this was a wfirst novel and any teenager should read this book and should love it.
Rating: Summary: What a Gem Review: I really liked this one, considering I barely ever read novels....and I finished it in a couple hours...but, after I saw the commercial on MTV, I felt like I HAD to go buy the book for some reason...and, I'm glad that I did...
Rating: Summary: It was something!? Review: It thought this book did a great job portraying a teenager, but I thought the morals were a little messed up. It's worth reading.
Rating: Summary: Destined to be a classic! Review: Excellent, well-written story about a year in the life of a unique yet common 15 year old. The novel, although being a quick read, is a sincerely deep tale of the life experiences of "Charlie". His emotional instability is something almost everyone can relate to (although probably not at the high level that Charlie experiences). Chbosky delivers with his unique format, as he pulls you in as if you may be the friend to whom the letters are addressed. Overall, this book is extremely enjoyable, and anyone who attended high school should be able to relate.
Rating: Summary: Refreshingly new Review: This book is so wonderful. I thought it looked good and bought it after seeing those commercials on MTV for weeks. But I was wrong- it wasn't good- it was amazing. This has to be my new favorite book. I don't read too much and most of the time when I do, I feel dissatisfied when I'm done. This book has none of that. Highly recommended.
