Summary: A different teen book.
Review: This book is different from other books targeted at teens because it is totally honest and doesn't have stereotypes.

The main character is difinetly a wallflower at first, but he kind of comes out of his shell after making some friends. This book isn't like a book where there is a definite beginning, middle, and end. It really is like a diary of someone's year in high school. What I like best is how the author doesn't try to make being a teen particularly glamorous. He also doesn't give the characters dumb problems like "Oh my God, I have a zit!" sort of thing.

I think many kids will be able to connect to at least one character in this book.

Summary: Perky about wallflowers
Review: A friend of mine recieved this book from someone who didn't know her very well in an attempt to enrich her life, noting the young aduld label upon it. If this nameless giver had actually read this book she would have been thouroghly shocked to realize that this was not just another coming of age story about some girl who gets her period. It is the story and the raw truth of a boy, Charlie, growing up, struggling to be real, and taking you with him. This book is a collection of letters, written to an annoyomous friend, which proves as the best tool into Charlie's every most thought. His life seems so bleak and hopeless until he meets two people Sam and Patrick, who happen to be seniors. They introduce this freshman to parties, drugs, and realtionships. Or just how one song can be so beautiful that you can sit and listen to the whole thing and truely feel infinite.

Summary: This is a hit in other countries too
Review: Initially I was searching for books in foreign languages. I was not looking for a book of this type at all, but I was hooked by the responses of readers.

Why? Because I spent about 30 minutes reading reviews, by teens and adults, in GERMANY, on Amazon.de. And I thought that this might be a great German language book. There was no clear label stating that I was reading about a translation of one of our books.

Their reaction in Germany?

The same. Every person who read this book and wrote about it from Germany said the same thing: excellent book. I have much more faith in the opinions by people who read books and love them then by the people who hype them.

So I read it. Read other reviews to find out why other people like it, and why. Read this to find out that this book is not only about teens, it is about all of use. And it's not only about Americans, it's about people, no matter where they live.

I ordered it from Germany, thinking that I had stumbled on a great 'find', wondering if I could ever talk about the book with people here, and the book read great in German.

Then I found out that it was a translation of one of OUR books. Amazing.

So now I will read it again, in English.

Anyone reading here might also find it fascinating that the Harry Potter books are dominating the 'hit list' in Germany.

Conclusion? Again and again, books that are initially labelled 'young adult' turn out to be some of the best books for people of any age.

If you are a teen who wants to know how other people feel, read it. If you are an 'older young adult', close to 20 or past, read it too. And if you are like me, 52 years old but still able to remember every great moment and every hellish moment in high school, read it. Nothing has changed. High school is as wonderful and awful as it was for me, 36 years ago.

Summary: lots of potential
Review: this book was ok. basically its starts off good. but the author could've done a better job and holding your attention. i mean,it's the same thing over and over. the kid goes to school and daydreams. sometimes he drinks or does drugs. he asks a lot of questions and wonders a lot about sex. he sees the rocky horror picture show. thats it...and it...and it. i'll admit, there was a lot of honesty on the author's part. yet at times, it seemed a little over the top with some of the occurences in charlie's life; like the author added elements of death to hold our attention. it was good, but not all out 5 stars.

Summary: Interesting, but A Modern Catcher in the Rye?
Review: I don't understand why everyone is comparing this book to Catcher in the Rye, I've read both and find them both hard to put down, but this book is very different and much more interesting. I must say though that I did go out and buy the CD of The Smiths that included the song "Asleep" I highly suggest that everyone listen to this song at least once in their lives. I found Charlie to be a very amusing and caring character that made him easy to relate to. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Chbosky did a wonderful job of portraying a teenager's life.

Summary: wonderful eye opening book!
Review: this book is great! nicely written but towards the middle you get the sense you're not reading letters from charlie but it turns into more of a novel. but still a great book! made me see how passive i was like charlie. an eye opener! recommended!

Summary: amazing
Review: i read this book a few days ago. i started it at 12:30 that night and read it straight until morning. i would be the first to admit that i'm an avid reader; reading constantly and sharing my opinions (solicited or unsolicited) about that books that i have read. i'm very critical and terribly hard to please, but yet this is the first book that i honestly COULDN'T PUT DOWN. it was fascinating, being a teenager of about Charlie's age, to read something that didn't preach, exaggerate, lie, or hide the truths of life. this book best described the side of highschool where they experience the "forbidden" things: drugs, alchohol, sex, and the rocky horror picture show. it had the raw aspect to it, Charlie was totally honest in the letters and showed that he was overwhelmed, struggling and desperate at times as many teenagers are. though it is easy to dismiss his type of friends as misfits, outcasts, misguided, they were true friends to him and helped him through a terribly difficult time. this is what high school is really like for many even though adults don't want to admit it. Charlie is such a great kid, you grow to love him and his friends as the letters progress and you feel pain when he does, happiness when Charlie is happy and betrayed when he is so. this isn't just a book, it's an experience and i promise you will be changed. i don't promise you'll like it, because if you don't want to acknowledge what you may be afriad of you won't, but you will be changed. that i can guarantee.

Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower is my favorite book. It was by complete chance that I found it in the bookstore. After reading ten pages I already knew this book would be my favorite. It is honest in a way that can't be described. I loved it and I hope you do too:-)

Summary: My Review of The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower was an overall great book. I have read it three times over and for me that is a big deal because i can't read any book over. It totally keeps my attention and i think it is a great reference for anyone starting High School. Ther story of Charlie and his friends is simply incredible and it shows how you still can have fun and enjoy life even if you're not in the "popular" crowd. I would recommnend this book to anyone.

Summary: Challenging the standard
Review: Being a reader of Coupland-ish novels this book spoke to me in a multitude of ways challenging my view of the people around me. I can only tell you that this book changed the way I talk and treat those around me. Recomended.
