I haven't finished it and hopefully it will get better but I really don't want to know what goes on in Stephen Chbosky. I would recomend this to any perverted young adults.
Rating: Summary: Everyday Srruggles Review: In the novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Stephen Chbosky uses many different techniques to characterize teenager's struggles. The novel is based on one boy's difficulties in life and how he, Charlie, deals with each encounter. In order for Charlie to get through these times, he writes letters to an anonymous "friend", whom he never reveals the name of. Charlie is a freshman in high school, who is trying to find his place in life. He has to deal with the struggles of any teenager; love, relationships, drugs, alcohol, and family trouble. In the end, he is able to overcome all and find out his purpose in life. Chbosky uses many different literary techniques in his writings. One such technique is his use of symbols. He uses issues that impact many teens, including drugs, sex, and alcohol, to depict the true essence of today's world. Chbosky also uses a journalistic style of writing. Through this format, one is able to experience the boys' steps day by day. Chbosky could be classified as a modernist writer. His style is very similar to the modernists containing journalistic writing, and not giving specific description of the characters. Through his images he allows the reader to capture their own view of people, and thus they are able to relate it to their own life. Chbosky writes a novel any person can relate to as it deals with many issues of everyday people. His main character experiences many problems, and believes there is no hope. As an author, his main goal is to please others, not to express his true inner feelings. Charlie is eventually able to overcome his fear of simply being himself and allows others to accept him for who he truly is. This book serves as an example for any teenager who has difficulties in life, and feel sometimes there is no way out. Chbosky's overall message in this novel is nobody's life is perfect, and when you think you have hit rock bottom, you can always go up. He contends anyone is capable of changing their life and seeing the good side of things.
Rating: Summary: "That is how this is." Review: "That is how this is." This phrase is the closest I can come to describing how I felt reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower. While specific events from my life and narrator Charlie's differed, of course, Chbosky has amazingly and accurately captured every aspect of the high school experience. It does not allow sentimentality; instead the book recreates the daily cycle of laughing and crying that at once induces a warm smile and heartwrenching pain.
Rating: Summary: A Must-Read for ALL Teenagers Review: Ok, after browsing my school library this thin book caught my attention at the top of a shelf, and after taking it down and reading the title I just knew I would love it. And you will too! Seriously, this is a great book for any teenager, especially those of you who have ever felt out of place, or have had trouble making friends. You will fall in love with the main character, Charlie, and just want to know everything about his sometimes, sad, depressing life. Believe me, this is not a book that is just waiting to disappoint you, this book is going to move you and if you're the depressed, I hate life type, you will soon think differenly about life and think "Hmm...maybe things aren't so bad" and you'll start looking for the good things. Read this book, or else!!
Rating: Summary: standing on the fringes of life... Review: i bought this book several months ago, put it in my bag to read inbetween classes, but just couldn't make myself do it. today i finally decided to read it, and i can't even begin to express how happy i am that i did. this is the best book i have ever read for several reasons. i was able to relate in so many ways, that it began to scare me. it brought me back to high school, during a time when making friends seemed almost impossible, and keeping them was even harder. there were times when i laughed, and times when i cried. it made me remember all of the times when i made simple mistakes, and thought that my life was over. i had no idea when buying this book, that it would in an instant, become a favorite.i highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: The perks of reading this book Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower completely revamps the conception of the generic wallflower everyone knew in high school. Stephen Chbosky tells a true tale of someone who is not well liked in high school, a road not usually traveled by writers. The tale is spun in the form of letters to an anonymous person, never revealed throughout the book, which adds a mysterious spin on the story. I had very high expectations of the book given that everyone one around me had read the book and now swears by it. The book starts out with a very unhappy letter to the said anonymous person by Charlie, a freshman just starting out in high school with no friends for his best friend just committed suicide, the hatred of his siblings, and book for a companion. Since Charlie has so much free time, he runs through books like tissues, discarding one and immediately taking up another. It is only when Charlie meets a nice guy in shop class called Nothing, that he luck begins to change and Charlie is thrown into a wild first year of the rest of his life. Charlie encounters everything from the intensity of his first crush to experiencing drugs for the first time. And yet he never fails to write a letter to his special friend. The book is about high school and yet only touches delicately on the hierarchy of the cruel world that kids exist in today. Stephen Chbosky sheds light on finding yourself in a particularly difficult time in ones life and shows that the worst situations bring out the best in everyone. Charlie being shy observes everyone around him and tries to memorize peoples exact moments so he can keep them in his mind forever, afraid that this dream will suddenly go away. I am very picky when it comes to choosing a book to read. The world is filled with bad books and I refuse to pledge my time to any one of them. So reading this book was a leap of faith for me and it turned out this was one special exception of the world filled with ...endings. I somehow identified with Charlie; it was almost like he was telling me his day, step-by-step, play-by-play. I recommend this book because it might remind you of the good old days when you were the loser in the corner or the geek in the cafeteria and for once the wallflower prevails and that's the way it should be.
Rating: Summary: what a great read! Review: I loved this book! This was recommended to me by someone 10 years my junior, so I was a bit leery. But I have to say this really took me back to my time as a high school freshman. The euphoria of making friends (with upper-class men no less) when you think you're in for four years of lonliness. Discovering "cool" music like the Smiths, Nick Drake or U2. Smoking your first cigarette, your first joint. Feeling like you're just an observer of life, rather than a participant. The author writes with a voice that rings so true you forget this is fiction. At the end I wanted to go to my mailbox and find a letter from Charlie.
Rating: Summary: Do you feel infinite?!?!?!? Review: "We accept the love we think we deserve". The best book of all time!!! Charlie, young freshman in high-school learns the values of friendship, and what it means to be himself. Along with his older friends, Charlie (A seemingly innocent young man) dives head-first into a world of drugs, rape, sex, and love; and through the mist manages to find out what life is suppose to be. With a wide variety of characters, this book is guaranteed to be a great addition to any type of collection. Of course the most important character of the book: Charlie, is a well thought out character who is so easy to relate to it's scarry. Learn to love this book, and go back to it for inspiration whenever you need it. If your feeling down, read it, it will cheer you up. I have loaned this book to all of my friends willing to read it, and all of them have said the same thing: they all loved it. Written in an interesting "letter" format, you will love the way the thoughts of the main character just flow into you, and the book will leave you wanting so much more. So learn to be a filter, not a sponge, and order the book now, you won't regret it. P.S. I read the entire thing the first time in one setting. please email me if you want any more information on the book, or the plot: ...
Rating: Summary: Another tale about the teenage crisis Review: Yes, for all that people say, it is a good book. The material is interesting and feeds all the readers needs of gossipy taboo's and nostalgic memories one may have of his/her teen years. I feel that Chbosky over dramatized the lives in the book, trying to fit in as many twists as possible to make the characters more intriguing. However, his ability to puzzle together as many situations and themes into one 213 page book is quite remarkable. Somehow it all fits. To be able to enjoy this book, you need to be able to let loose and just flow wherever the book takes you. It is an exciting ride that is nothing new. Just another tale of teenage crisis: kid goes through changes to reveal truths of the world.
Rating: Summary: Book Review Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower was such an amazing book to read, especially as an adolescent. Being able to understand and sympathize with Charlie was a wonderful experience. It was so interesting to see his character change as people entered or left his life. The way the author portrayed the charachters and situations involving Charlie was incredible. He made everything seem so real, and that just made the book that much better. This was not another one of those sad teenage sob books where the main charachter deals with drugs and sex, but a story where reall life things actually occur. Being able to relate with Charlie and the situations he was faced with made reading this book an incredible experience.
