Rating: Summary: The Perks of Being a Wallflower Review: First all I would definitely reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about the the struggles that come with the high school years and all the pain and pleasures they bring. This book chronicles the high school experiences of a boy named Charlie who keeps a diary of events so desciptive that you feel like you are experiencing them with him. I do not read books that much but when I got hold of this book I honestly could not put it down. From the first page it drew me in and got me hooked because I knew what he was going through because I have been through high school and could relate. I found this book to have many merits and far fewer shortcomings. The first merit that stood out to me was the language that is used. Many books use language that is not fit for the audience that is reading the book butthis book uses the language that a boy in high school would use, therefor making it fun to read and also a lot easier to understand. The language gets quite graphic in some places so you have to be a little open minded in order to not be offended. Another merit of this book that I picked up on was that it discusses topics in depth and does not skip over the topics that are considered taboo in today's society. In his diary, Charlie discusses such contraversial topics as homosexuality, drug usage, sex, feelings of guilt, domestic violence, and even death. I liked that this book delves into these topics pretty deep and shows how they affect Charlie. From Charlies point of view nothing is black and white or right and wrong because he is constantly getting different messages about situations. His lifeline in this book or the thing that makes him feel at peace is The Rocky Horror Picture Show and a special song that makes him feel infinite. Everybody can relate to this book because we have all been through the hell that is the high school years. The last but not least merit that I will discuss is the format in which the book is written. One of the things I like about this book is instead of having a 15 page paragraph it has many short journal entries that are not super long so it is easier to read and not get tired or bored. I have discussed many merits of this exceptional book but one thing I could not find was any shortcomings. I liked everything about this book and personally did not find anywhere in the book that I thought needed improvements. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes to get involved in a good book that deals with real life situations. Charlie and author Stephen Chbosky take you on a rollercoaster ride that is constantly up and down. This book is passivtiy vs. passion and just a great all around book. Highly, highly, reccomended.
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest Review: This book is one of those books you just can't put down. My friend started reading it and then i borrowed it before she was done, so when i got started she was like AHH I NEED IT BACK so i was just completely in suspense until she finished it. but once i got it. i was like pure reading all the time. in every class at school, on the bus, when i got home, until i finished it and even then i just didn't want to put it down. I totally want Stephen Chbosky to write another book because his writing is just soooo incredibly amazing. It is so beautiful i just wanted to experience every aspect of charlie's life. get this book..you'll never put it down. in fact i've read it 4 times now and it still is amazing and beautiful...
Rating: Summary: Charlie is the embodiment of everything cool Review: This book rules. I love to read, and I've read a lot of stuff in varying degrees of quality, but this book is the best thing I have ever read. Acclaimed by emo kids everywhere, this book lets you look into the life of Charlie through his letters to an anonymous kindred spirit. Charlie is NOT your stereotypical shoot-me-now teenager portrayed in most novels. He's real, a perfect representation of all the kids at your high school who DONT care about YM or MTV or Abercrombie. Charlie and his friends like the Smiths, Nirvana, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was nice to read something real for once instead of the trash they force-feed you at the bookstores. Though he's definetly messed up, Charlie manages to get through things with a bittersweet desperation for things to be okay. Read this book, it's so worth it.
Rating: Summary: * * * * * Review: what i really enjoy about the perks of being a wallflower is that, yes it is a diary of a teenager growing up and going through hardships, but it is much deeper than all other "diaries" i have read so far. it might help that the main character, charlie, is a boy, or at least that he has real problems other than not having a significant other or being popular in school. he isn't popular, nor does he try to be. he tries to find his own place. charlie is honest, smart, sincere, and open with his feelings. readers can relate to the character, yet the events are not typical. i highly recommend this book *my favorite book* to anyone who wants to read a truly honest and meaningful story.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book Review: This is definitely one of the best books I have ever read. Although it is very sad and emotional at times, it contains humor that will keep you smiling. It is a great book about childhood and growing up. I can relate to many things that Charlie (the main character) goes through. "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" is a book filled with love, passion, romance, humor, and about everything you could ask for. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Even better the second time! Review: I first read The Perks of Being a Wallflower when I was just starting my freshman year of high school. At the time I thought the book was fascinating, exciting and above all else, I could really relate to Charlie. We all feel like wallflowers sometimes in our life and Charlie made me realize that I wasn't alone. When I picked up the book for a second time, as a senior coming towards the end of her last year of high school I was left with a somewhat different. Charlie is a wallflower. He begins his freshman year of high school very confused. He is friendless, a result of his only friend Michael, committing suicide only the year before. Most people think of him as weird because of his easy ability to cry and the fact that he's so quiet. When he meets two seniors named Sam and Patrick, everything changes. His time as a wallflower is ended and it's finally time for him to step out onto the dance floor. Sam, Patrick, and their other friends begin to integrate him into the real world by exposing him to sex, drugs, rock and role, and the Rocky Picture show. Charlie begins to learn about friendship, sexuality, while learning how to understand his complicated family. Charlie's freshman year is one of the most effective years of his life. It's strange to read Charlie's story again. I find myself a little surprised at his naivety and vulnerability, something I didn't notice when I was fourteen. It just proves that Charlie acts very much like a freshman in high school, even though he is a bit strange. If you really look at the way the book is written it even sounds a lot like a freshman in high school would sound like. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a touching book about growing up in a difficult time. I suggest reading it if you are like Charlie, a freshman. Read it if you're just a teenager. Read it if you're an adult. No matter how old you are you'll get something out of this powerful short novel. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Innocence.... Review: I adored this book. It was so touching. Charlie is so innocent when he writes about the things that he witnesses. You can't help but have this overwhelming amount of compassion for the guy. I especially enjoyed the heartwrenching poem about the guy who grows up. I would DEFINATELY recommend this book to people who enjoy books that deal with such deep issues in such an innocent way.
Rating: Summary: the best book ever Review: This really was the best book I have ever read...I don't even want to pick up a new book to read because I know it wont even compare. Enjoy
Rating: Summary: Not Very Many Perks Review: Charlie, the main character, is experiencing his first year of high school. His friend past away during the summer and he is very nervous about high school. He relieves some of this nervousness by writing letters(the format of the book) to an annonymous recipient, whose identity is never revealed. The letter writing was recommended by his English teacher, in which Charlie has an abnormal relationship with. Charlie meets two friends who are seniors. They make his first year experiences, somewhat too mature and illegal for anyone. After reading this book, I was left with an unsettling feeling. I was very surprised and disturbed by the content of this book. Some of Charlie's experiences, I feel should not have been shared. If Mr. Chobsky felt that he needed to share every experience, then I think he should have used some discretion. I think this book is a bit too crude for young adults. I would not broadcast or recommend this book for high school students.
Rating: Summary: A sense of truth. Review: I checked out this book today at the library, and finished it today. It really impacted me, being a teen, i can truely emphasize with charlie, and the things he has to go through. The book is sad, and depressing at times, but it truely does depict the life of a teen who has been through alot.
