Rating: Summary: Is this REAL???? Has 2 be! "VERY Realistic " Review: I <3ed reading this story since Liv kinda reminds me of myself & my friend....our personalities. Rating: Summary: A book of discovery Review: Meet Liv--a girl who wears all black, including her heavy makeup. She lives in New York City with her Gran, until her Gran dies of heart failure. Now Liv must move to California to live with her estranged father. Her dad is a diver, and eventually brings Liv out on the boat with him to be his tender. Though they struggle with each other on land, out at sea both are comfortable--a surprise to Liv. She begins to learn a lot about her dad, herself, and life. Written entirely in the third person, it occassionally is confusing, but the fast-paced action keeps you moving. Characters fall out of believability at times, but generally are real enough for you to identify with them. Readers will transform right along with Liv as she adjusts to a new life in California with her dad.
Rating: Summary: [A] Review Review: This is one of the best books from Valerie Hobbs. It had a lot of unexpected twists and turns. The book started off fast and made you think before jumping into conclusions. The plot was nicely organized and well written. The characters were interesting and you could picture what they would look like. The wonderful beach setting made you feel like you were actually there, feeling the ocean breeze. Tender explains that no matter what you are going through the best will come out unexpectedly.
Rating: Summary: A PLAY on WORDS and EMOTIONS Review: Valerie Hobbs is a master of her craft. Her greatest gift, perhaps, is the creation of vivid, memorable characters. This talent is clearly displayed in TENDER. Liv is a struggling, often impulsive teenager with rough, believable edges. Her beloved grandmother has just died, and she is forced to live with the father who deserted her at birth. She doesn't know him. She doesn't want to know him and certainly doesn't want to love him. But she becomes his "tender" on the fishing boat--he's an abalone diver. TENDER is the moving story of a relationship; it's also a powerful story about change, growth, and the power of love. Hobbs is unflinching writer -- she tells her truth and her characters breathe real air. TENDER is for teenagers, but adults will revel in it too.
Rating: Summary: Strong in characterization and plot Review: Valerie Hobbs' Tender creates a realistic story in the form of Liv, who has lived with her beloved grandmother all her life. When her grandmother dies and she's turned over to a gruff, unknown father, she finds an overwhelming number of changes affects her life - and new friendships are formed. Strong in characterization and plot.
