Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: I read this book several months ago, and I loved it. The whole attitude Elske has and the way she looks at life is so naive and innocent - but not annoyingly so. I thought the book was baeatifully written, and this is the book that made me read On fortunes wheel and Jackaroo(which are both about the kingdom and by Cynthia Voigt also). I wholly reccomend this book to anyone, even if you don't like fantasy.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful read Review: I read Voight's other "Kingdom" books as a teenager, but when I came across Elske on the site, I had to buy it. I was a little wary that I would have outgrown the series, but I quickly found myself completely immersed in the story. Voight crafts an excellent tale, doing well to tie this book in with the others in the series, but with such subtlety than one must not have read the others to enjoy Elske. The characters are strong, and the only negative thing I can say is that it all seems to wrap up too quickly. The last few chapters could have been fleshed out a great deal more without overburdening the plot, and I, for one, would have enjoyed a little more substance. However, it still makes for a great read, whether or not you're family with the other books.
Rating: Summary: Elske Review: I've been a fan of Cynthia Voigt for years. And this addition to the Kingdom series was great! It really kept me reading to find out where she was taking Elske. As a student of medieval history as well as of viking culture & history I appreciated Voigt's depiction of the Volking and Elske's perception of her place in their society. I encourage young women and their mothers to read this book in their book groups and to explore the medival world. My 12 year old daughter, a mature reader, loved it. Cyntia Voigt has done it again with another great book.
Rating: Summary: The Kingdom Series comes to a magnificent conclusion Review: In one word, this book is wonderful. I read Jackaroo and On Fortune's Wheel when I was 14, and now I have read The Wings of a Falcon and Elske, when I am 18. Although labeled Young Adult, this series is good for adults of all ages. If only Cynthia Voigt would write more in this series!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Elske what a book! Review: The book Elske, by Cynthia Voigt, was a very intersting and complex book. The story starts with a girl named Elske, who was an outkast ever since birth. In fact she was raised to be a Death Maidden to the Volkking. That means shes is to seve him in his after life, so she has to die with him. But, her grandmaother, Tamara, has other plans for her. Her grandmother risks her own life to save Elske. She sends her on a journey to a unknown land to Elske. Her grandmother tells her stories of the land, and were to go.After she reaches the land, she finds work doing various jobs for people, which are unordinary in a way. While there she makes arep. for herself, by doing and amazing, herioc act to save someone. After two years she meets Beriel, an unrulely princess. They become closer as times goes on. By the time a year rolls around she knows everything that is to happen, and has vowed to be through her side in the battle. The battle to reclaim her throne from her brother. In the end ...... wins and you won't believe it. I recommend this book for anyone who doesn't mind a challenge when it comes to reading. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: A Powerful book of two strong young women. Review: The latest addition to Cynthia Voigt's Kingdom series. Elske offers a heroine who is very much her own person. Even though Elske has been chosen to be the Death Maiden of the Volkking, she escapes to begin life. Elske makes her way to the trading city Trastad, despite being a servant and an outsider, her honesty, intelligence, and good humour bring respect and friendship. Just when most fiction for young adults would have Elske marry the master of the house (whose children she cared for while their mother suffered from a lingering sickness) Voigt takes Elske down a different path. Since she refuses to marry anyone, she is sent to be the handmaid of the defiant princess Beriel. Elske's most difficult adventure begins. Beriel has been sent to Trastadt to marry. In her kingdom the oldest child, male or female, may inherit the throne. Beriel's younger brother has usurped her position and exiled her. How he manages to do this is not for the squimish, nor for young readers. Voigt does the unthinkable, she gives the reader not one, but two strong young women to share the pages of her book. Lesser writers would not be able to accomplish it. Voigt is able to bring Elske and Beriel together in an uncommon relationshp. They are never servant and master, and never truly friends. But, there is a bond between them. One of deepest trust. Elske's lack of knowledge of the world sometimes causes her trouble, but never embarrassment, for her actions are rarely for herself. This books is for the more sophisticated, thoughful reader. Mature themes are an intregal part of Elske's journey. Not recommended for readers under 12.
Rating: Summary: review from an older perspective Review: The story draws you in and the characters are captivating. if your a strong minded girl you will love the two main characters in this book. for the culture and surroundings that they live in they are truely rebellious. i loved this book and hope that many people will enjoy it as much as i did. i also enjoy and recommend cynthia voigt's other books.
Rating: Summary: A great conclusion Review: This book extremly intresting, and especially involving if you have read the other two books in the loosely connected series. It was beautifully written, and I found myself complelty lost in the adveterous and sometimes brutal world of Elske. This book is graphic (not distastfully so, but I recommend it for more mature readers). It is a wonderful read, realistic, diverse, unpredicatable, and touching.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book Review: This book is really wonderful, and I reccomend any of Cynthia Voigt's books, especially the Tillerman series. On Fortune's Wheel is also a very good book. Te plot of Elske is wonderful, and I would reccomend it to any teenager. If you love mythical books, set in the past then you should most definitely read this one.
Rating: Summary: Terrific Review: This book is wonderful. I've never read the other books in the series, but I understood every word in this book. The story did start slowly, but as you learned of the culture of the Volkking and the life of Elske. Everything you want to happen in this book does. It's wonderfully written, however, the first few chapters often mention rape.
