Rating: Summary: THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST HORRIBLE BOOKS I'VE READ!!!!!!! Review: I read this book for 7th grade, and I tried to stay awake while reading it, it was SOOOOOOOOO boing. Everybody died, and I've learned nothing from it. I am tierd of Newbery giving awards, to depressing books. I recommend that you DO NOT read this book!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: This book was a great book. Review: I just got done reading...well, listening to this great book. I loved it. I recommend it on tape.
Rating: Summary: A touching and haunting book Review: I got this book a long while ago - I think I started reading it about 2 and a half years ago, but I got bored with it and didn't read any more. Then yesterday I found it on a bookshelf, and remembered two and a half years ago when I put it down. I started reading it, and somehow it had a different effect on me. I truly see the value of this calm and peaceful book. True, it doesn't have a lot to keep a person interested, but if you persevere to the end, you might also see the value of this book. I just have to warn you first - you will not find any action or fantasy in this book. This made it quite realistic to me. You probably know the plot by now from other reviews (Summer lives with Ob & May - uncle & aunt; May dies; Summer & Ob grieve; A boy named Cletus Underwood from school reads about someone who might help them communicate with May...). The end is touching and I really think this book has to sink into your mind for you to see the real value of this. I am very knowledgeable about the Newbery criteria, and in my opinion, this is one of the best choices for the Newbery Medal ever. I hope you will like it too, but I do recommend checking it out from your library before buying it, because many people won't like this book. One more thing - I usually do not like books about people dying and their relatives grieving, but I made an exception for this book.
Rating: Summary: We all grieve differently Review: I read this book not too long after my own father's death. It gave me an understanding of my mother's grief and how we must all come to terms with the loss of a loved one in our own way. Consequently, I was able to be more empathetic and patient. Thank you Cynthia Rylant, for once again opening my eyes to a better understanding of the human heart.
Rating: Summary: I teach this book to my 7th grade class. Review: Missing May is one of my favorite Newbery winners in recent years. My students love the quirky characters. This book is a wonderful way to discuss dealing with the death of a loved one. My students did not at all find the theme boring or depressing. The ending was very uplifting. As a teacher, I would recommend this book very highly.
Rating: Summary: A truly Pitiful Story Review: The story was so sad and the characters were so emotionally unstable that I felt like laughing at them for being so reminescent. The lady died, the end...that's life...just keep on living. I hated how the characters were feeling sorry for themselves 24/7. This book was way to fluffy, even for me.
Rating: Summary: How did THIS book get an award? Review: Yeah, 1 star may be harsh, but that's what this book truely deserves. The story was, to put bluntly, dull and boring. I had a hard time getting past the 2nd chapter. I had to read this for school, and like many other students, we kept nagging our teacher about how great this book is and about how we wish we could read it again (as if she would waste school time doing that). Ah, the art of sucking up for a good grade. Now even if the story was bad, the length or content's writing style could have been better to keep us interested. But alas, the whole book failed our 6th grade readers, my fellow classmates. Teachers, don't be fooled by this book's cover with the metal plastered on, there are other more arousing and worthy novels out there to spend your time on.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing. Review: I expect much better things from a Newbery-award winner. Nothing much seemed to actually HAPPEN, they just thought about things and talked. Maybe I would have liked it better if I had had someone I know die, but I haven't and this book was not interesting to me. I kept expecting something to happen soon but then I realized I was on the last few pages and it was still nothing. Please take my advice because I read a lot and I know about books. Even if you still want to read it, check it out from the library because it's too short to be worth the money. For a GOOD book about death, I reccommend WALK TWO MOONS. The author makes it funny, interesting and sad at the same time. I am 14 years old.
Rating: Summary: My students loved it. Review: I read this little book last summer to prepare a book talk for my junior high students. It was good, had an interesting plot, and made me think about relationships and losing those we loved. When I presented it to my class, I had several students read it and start passing it on to their friends outside of my class. That makes it a winner!
Rating: Summary: Save your money. Check it out if you want to read it. Review: I really was disappointed in this book. The characters were not developed at all. The author did a lot of telling and no showing. We are asked to believe a lot of things, with no reasons to believe them. I gave it 2 stars because it deals with death. The reversal is not earned. I wouldn't suggest that anyone purchase this book.
