Summary: May dies, Ob and Summer cry, wa wa, THE END
Review: Was this supposed to be a touching book? Please let me know. May died before the book even started, so we didn't even get to know her. And then we were supposed to feel sorry for Summer? She spent the book crying and talking about how odd Cletus was. Cletus, at least, had a hobby. Yes, I have experienced death, and I still don't get MISSING MAY. Yeah, everyone grieves differently, I know, but that doesn't mean Cynthia Rylant had to let her characters mope around dismally. If you do want to read a book that deals well with death, and there are a lot of them out there, I recommend you stear clear of Cynthia Rylant.

Summary: What was Newbury thinking?
Review: I have absolutely no idea how or why this book got the Newbury Award! I usually choose award-winners because, well they won an award, but after reading this I don't trust book awards any more. Missing May was boring, pointless, and did not have much thought put into it. Maybe you, the reader of this , throughly loved it. Fine. That is just my opinion, but I definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK! The only people I think would enjoy this are people with a lot of extra time on their hands. 1 star? Try again!

Summary: WATCHING OVER LOVED ONES
Review: Love has a bind all of its own over many obstacles. This book displayes the family ties that one has to bear while coming of age be it 11 or 111. As you read you become a part of the story and feel the characters bonds to one another. You can not put this book down and truely say that you have NOT been moved!

Summary: Missing May
Review: I thought this book was just O.K. It is not a book I would read twice. I really enjoyed the character of Cletus. Poeple that are different from others are always fun to get to know. I think the only thing that actually let me down was the ending. I just kind of felt like I was left out of what happened, there was no pounch at the end.

Summary: A Book Not To Miss!
Review: Not only is this book incredibly touching and deep, it is all around a pleasure to read. I loved this book. Cynthia Rylant uses words and analogies in which spread a smile across my face page after page. This book relates to children, of all ages on different levels, as well as adults. Any one would love the characters Rylant creates. There are times when I laughed out loud, and times there was a tear in my eye. I recommend it to anyone. Especially those who have lost someone, it's a great way to help make sense of the emotions and questions one feels after such a time. This book is excellent!

Summary: Dull characters, too short, no one in my grade liked it
Review: At the beginning of this year, the whole sixth grade was assigned to read this book; no one liked it. The characters were blank, and just about as lively as a stone. They spent the whole book wallowing in their self pity. I had to force myself to read it, and now it is shoved out of my sight and under the bed.

I overlook Newbury awards now. None of the good books I've read have had the medal on them; only depressing books get the award. How come J.K. Rowling, Brian Jacques, and Ann Rinaldi are so far award-less? Wake up Newbury!

Summary: A BEAR NAMED SONG
Review: What a perfect book for children to understand adoption. A perfect gift for the family with an adopted child. A must have! Sadly, it is out of print. Please let's write Standard Pub. Co. and ask for a reprint! It is a jewel and it is timeless!

Summary: MISSING MAY
Review: Summer has her prayers answered when she is taken in by Uncle Ob and Aunt May. May dies and the rest of the book is about Uncle Ob and Summer dealing with life post May with a weird neigbor boy Cleutus. However, their gift to one another is the love they share. Cleutus teaches the reader a story about acceptance and loyalty. The book is filled with fun characters and fabulous writing. I cried and I laughed. All my emotions were given to reading this quick read. Touches the human spirit. The book is a gift to the reader.

Summary: Missing May Review
Review: I thought that this book did an excellent job of portraying the death of a loved one through the eyes of a child. Death is an obstacle that is not easy for children to deal with. I think the book did a great job of displaying to children that it is alright to be upset with a loss as long as you take your time to mourn and get on with your life.
