Summary: What a cute book!
Review: I love animals and I've always wished that my dogs could talk. Amy is so lucky, I wish I had her luck!! Sometimes I wonder if talking dogs would talk often, but Sherlock didn't seem to speak non stop. I almost forgot he was a dog!!! I was mad when I read what Dr. Boden wanted to do to Sherlock, but in the end I was glad that Dr.Boden's boss decided that Sherlock was worth more to her. I'm very happy for Amy(I won't say what happens, so it won't ruin the story)!!!

Summary: A fun and exciting book
Review: I thought this was a really good book, it is funny and exciting. I read it very quickly because I wanted to see what was going to happen next and I kept hoping they wouldn't find Sherlock. I thought that the story was unpredictable which made the book even more exciting. If Ms. Vande Velde writes another Smart Dog book I will read it!

Summary: How I Came To Write SMART DOG
Review: Like a lot of my stories, SMART DOG is the result of 2 (in other cases it's been more) separate strands of thoughts coming together: (1) The thought (dream? wish?) probably shared by just about everyone who has ever owned and loved a dog: Wouldn't it be great if I could talk to my dog and my dog was smart enough to talk to me?

At the same time this thought was rattling around my head, (2) I was talking to some writer friends about school bullies, and I was thinking that, in my experience, girls tend to bully just as much as boys do--but that they have a totally different way of doing it.

That said, I have to admit that our family doesn't currently own a dog. We have a rabbit and the pair of mice that my daughter bought the first week she was away from home at college this year. (Except, of course, that the mice were discovered, thrown out of the dorm, and now there are 10 of them...)

Summary: Amusing canine fantasy
Review: Sherlock is a dog who has escaped from a university lab where gene splicing and neuron stimulation have made him intelligent and able to talk. Fifth-grader Amy and her friends find that keeping the dog's identity secret from grown-ups results in all sorts of unforeseen and hilarious complications. "Smart Dog" doesn't quite measure up to Ms. Vande Velde's best ("A Hidden Magic," for example), but still I found it an enjoyable read: Sherlock and his rescuers are likable characters, the school bully gets her comeuppance, and all ends happily. If you like humorous dog stories, you might also want to read Peter Dickinson's "Chuck and Danielle."

Summary: Mother-Daughter Book Club Review
Review: This story is about a dog named Sherlock who escapes from a university lab because he fears for his life. Sherlock is a lab experiment dog with human intelligence and even the ability to speak. Sherlock sees a girl named Amy on her way to school and asks her for help. Amy is a typical fifth grader. She's not very popular and has never really stood out.

Upon the discovery of Sherlock, Amy's life becomes very exciting. While many of the kids at school never learn that Sherlock can speak, they all see that he is a special dog, and that makes Amy more popular. Also, she has to work up creative plans to keep Sherlock hidden from the people at the University lab.

The girls in the book club (all about aged 10) enjoyed this book tremendously.
