Anyone who wants to start studing for the SAT must pick up this book!
Rating: Summary: Kick that Evil Testing Serpent to the ground! Review: I love this book. It was the first SAT prep book I bought or even looked at which ended up being really good for me - the book is mad funny and keeps you entertained. I felt confident that I would be able to kick the SAT's [rear], and confidence at the start of any venture is really important. The vocabulary list is the best part of the book - funny and extremely helpful. I only wish the book was bigger, and that they had covered more math. Math is what I really am bad at, anyway. This book shall always have a special spot in my heart :o)
Rating: Summary: entertaining does not equal worthwhile Review: I quote from another reviewer: "They even say that repeating a word during, ahem, sexual activity makes it easier to remember. I tried this and it works." That says it all about the value of this book.
Rating: Summary: This book is GREAT!!! Review: I really like this book a lot because it is made by kids for kids, and they are the ones who really understand us. This book has great strategies and is easy to understand. If you are studying for the SAT BUY THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Excellent prep book--like nothing else out there! Review: I saw the author of this book (Joe Jewell) on Fox-2 News in Detroit, he seems like a cool guy. And the book is AWESOME! There is no other SAT review book out there quite like it. The most important aspect of it is the fact that it's written BY and FOR teenagers. Unlike the other SAT books out there, which are dry and boring, "Up Your Score is fresh", entertaining, and keeps you amused while you're learning. By the way: my score jumped 130 points after reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Not another dry, boring SAT book! Review: I teach an SAT Prep course, and I recently was thrilled when I found this book. It is totally in tune with a teenager's sense of humor. I was even laughing out loud in some instances! Even better, it is an excellent preparation tool that identifies tried and true techniques. They have updated this edition so that the jokes are new and fresh, and the writers are completely down-to-earth. They truly seem to recall what it is like to be an eleventh grader who is extremely anxious about taking this test. Additionally, it's not too long and cumbersome that it will scare away students who truly wish to up their scores; I read the book in one evening. (I wish I had read it when I was in high school!!!) It's a necessity for any college-bound high school student!
Rating: Summary: It Works! Review: I used this book as part of my SAT test prep and I raised my score 150 points. As a result of my score I became a National Merit Scholar. I think the best section of this book is the vocabulary, with an interesting technique to memorize the words. I used this part the most and also some of the tricks for the math section. However, I would also suggest buying a vocabulary and/or math workbook to go with this, since there are not really any practice problems in the book. Also, as the book's authors suggest, buy 10 Real SATs for the most legit practice tests around. All in all, a great tool.
Rating: Summary: Great for people who are good at standardized tests! Review: I used this book back in high school, and while I really loved it and it was by far my favorite SAT prep book, I do think that it is most helpful for students who already do well on standardized tests but want that extra edge. If you're struggling to break 1100, you would probably be better off with a book that focuses more on the basics (like Kaplan). The book gives lots of great tips about guessing, great vocabulary list including definitions and sample sentences (my school put together their own list, so I didn't really need theirs). It really helps build your confidence, with a lot of little tips and tricks to make test day easier.
I am really glad that they keep updating this book- it really was my favorite book, and I think one of the most helpful for me. When I was taking the SAT in high school, I also looked at the Kaplan and Princeton Review books, and did not think they were helpful at all, because my skill level was past what they were presenting. I think Up Your Score is great for students who already get a lot of test prep in school (like I did) or who feel comfortable taking standardized tests, or as a supplemental to other prep books.
This book is also not a substitute for doing lots of practice questions, which you will need to do even if you're confident about your test taking ability. At bare minimum, I recommend this book + the 10 SATs book.
Rating: Summary: The best prep book on the market! Review: I used this book in 1992 to study for the old SAT and this year to study for the GRE and scored in the 99th percentile each time. The book is so funny that I woke my parents up laughing in high school while studying. You can't prepare for these tests if it is boring and tedious and you avoid it, that this book makes studying fun is what makes it work. The 600 word vocabulary list is invaluable and the mneumonics are amazing (although I have better ideas for a few!). Really a great tool both for the SAT and GRE!
Rating: Summary: Invaluable Review: I used very few books to help me prepare for the SAT. In addition to the book published by the College Board with 10 practice SATs, this is the book to get. The tips on the verbal section are invaluable. Learning vocabularly and how to do analogies and reading comprehensive is fine. But the challenge for most of us taking the SAT is not knowing the meanings of words, but how to think on the SAT. The verbal section of An Underground Guide teaches you how to decipher the patterns of the verbal section. It needs to be read if you are looking for 50-100 points improvement on the verbal. If you are looking for math help, however, this book will not help you very much.
