Rating: Summary: Fool the eye will not serve you! Review: The first hundred pages takes you to a small simple country village on the eve of Beltine called Wintersnight. The celebration is a celebration of the spring planting, however winter has hung onto the region. On the eve of this special night the Dark One tries to kill three boys and the book takes off. The next day the three boys (Rand, Mat, Perrin), a girl (Eqwene), an Aes Sedai, and a Warder flee the country village. The boys may never return as the forces of evil keep them from returning and Ba'alzamon hunts them down. Three simple country boys face a world they do not know and learn they are Ta'veren. Each finds out they play a part in saving the world from the Shadow and each must fulfill their destiny in order to shape the patten to the Creator's vision. Pray to the light that when the Dragon is Reborn light will triumph over evil and The Eye of the World does not serve the Dark One.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous. A great start to my Fantasy reading Review: Unlike some people I love details (although it gets annoying at times), and I find that having them adds to my enjoyment of a story. This said.RJ seems to relish every aspect of his story. He has created such a complex and facinating world..one just has to sit in awe of his imagination. You have to respect that. With that said. All I have to say about how much I enjoyed this particular book is that..I started the series 2 weeks ago..and I'm up to book 4 now (mind you..I have hw and other things to do also...my GPA is going to suffer..cause I can't stop now). For all the complaints about the books being long and full of too much detail...they move pretty fast. I love the fact that his books so far have been mainly character driven. I hate books and movies that just have a bunch of plot devices that make no sense and the characters blindly go about thier business without any solid reasoning or real emotion. Not saying this has none of that..it does to some extent, but they make sense acording to the character. I love Rand and his role as reluctant hero (although he was srating to annoy me with the "I'm a shepard boy thing..). He is not the perfect character for sure..but I like that..he's scared and weak at times..but it makes it all the more interesting. Perrin too is off to a great start...he is slowly becoming on of my favorites. But that title goes to Lan..who I just love and I am chomping at the bit to find out more about him. The females were great too. The Aes Sedai..who is justso coldly detached..she gives me shivers, and Ewgene, who just wants to get out on an adventure and soon get more than she wanted..and Nynaeve..the bossiest, most unlikeable...yet most emotinally fragile character I've seen in a while. I like the way she and Lan are going. I also loved all the villans. Very creative and fright inducing. Fades, Forsaken, trollocs...I wonder what else he has in store for me. My only complaint was Mat...just not enough of his perspective. There were times I really wanted Rand to leave him in a haystack or something..his whinning was getting old. Overall..for someone who just started reading fantasy a month ago..I'm enjoying this greatly. But if I pass out from lack of sleep Mr Jorden will be getting my docters bill :-). Out of the first 3 books..thisis my second favorite...next to "The Great Hunt".
Rating: Summary: On par with Tolkein. Review: Jordan is right up there with Tolkein as far as fantasy is concerned! This book was given to me by my parents when I was in 8th grade. Now I'm a freshman in college and I still love it! I own and have read all eight books out to date, and I'm waiting for the next one. Rumor had it that it would out late Feb to early March of 2000, but that didn't come to pass, so...I'll just continue to wait.
Rating: Summary: Nearly 5 Stars Review: I started to read this book when i was in seventh grade, in 1998, and I HATED it. I couldn't force myself past the first 100 pages. I couldn't relate to the characters, or find any plot whatsoever. I recently picked it up again, and could not put it down. My only complaint would be the fact that sometimes it feels like events are overexplained, making them seem less believable. I also don't like the dreams- I know they are important, but sometimes I have to re-read them in order to understand what happened. I have yet to continue with the series (it took me forever to find a copy of *The Great Hunt*) but I hope it stays as interesting as it is.
Rating: Summary: Please make the hurting stop. Review: What, may I ask, is so wonderful about this brain-dead book? It can't be the story, which is some God-awful combination of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Seven Samurai". It can't be the characters, which strike me as mindless zombies meandering from point to point with little to no personality shown on their parts. The idiotic writing can't be it. So, what in heavens is it? Masterpiece? Greatest fantasy ever? I don't think so. But people will keep buying it and reading it, and then they'll come here and talk about how wondrous it is. And I'll be left to wonder. Why!
Rating: Summary: The beginning of one of the best fantasy series ever written Review: This book, although arguably the weakest book in the series, is complex, captivating and literally spellbinding. I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to enter into a different world (and has alot of spare time....the ninth book is coming out in the fall).
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Start to an Exciting Series Review: This book provides an excellent start to the Wheel of Time series. True, it does have some familiar ideas (which Jordan acknowledges), but these are merely exposition for the many plot twists and exciting adventures to come. If you enjoy fantasy, science fiction, or even down-to-earth stories about people, you will enjoy this book. Jordan combines an exceedingly rich fantasy world with realistic and compelling character studies. There are some many aspects to enjoy, it is nearly impossible to account for them all.
Rating: Summary: Not captivating Review: Robert Jordan is obviously an excellent author. This is my first reading of his works, and his ability to describe people and events is very good. Perhaps too good for the sake of the book. While the book focuses on the development and changes in the characters in light of the events that take place, I was never able to become interested in the characters or events. Jordan describes things well, but he never grabbed me. This book came highly recommended, so I forced myself to finish it. I found myself reading until I got to a stopping point, and I never felt compelled to continue on. In a less involved book that would be livable, but in an epic of this size it is almost inexcusable. In light of the tremendous reception of this book, it is obvious many people enjoyed and will enjoy it. Don't let this blind you into thinking everyone will like it, however, because it is not, by any means, a masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: Great book, great series! Review: I found the Eye of the World to be one of the best Fantasy books yet! Maybe I was just stunned from my migration from the laid back comedy of Piers Anthony or enthralled by the level of detail and challenge of the Dune series. But of all the Fantasy books I have read, this is the first in a series that I have waited patiently for each and every book after to come out! If you haven't read any Robert Jordan books and are looking for a serious read, definitely forget that he wrote the Conan series and pick up Eye of the World. If you can finish it and enjoy it, you are only going to get even more caught in his well crafted web of magic, subplots and slow character development that will keep you reading for weeks and slavering for the next book in the series!
Rating: Summary: A weak plot and average writing does not a book make Review: If you like a book with a mix of stolen plots (mostly Tolkien) written in such a way as to allow for as many $sequals$ as possible this is for you. Here and there his writing is okay, but mostly it is bland. This reminds me of a soap opera. Lots of people like it, but I can't seem to stand it. I read it only because a friend from my army days loved it. Even my flat mate who loves trash fiction gave up. Read some Terry Pratchett instead and spare yourself.
