Rating: Summary: The eye of the world, and the whole seires is fantastic! Review: The Eye of the World: The book starts the whole book out with a bang. It only takes about 20 pages to get into, and it has the best prologue I have ever read. Here is a not so brief summary of the book. A stranger comes to the quiet little town called Emonds feild, in the Two rivers. The main charictors at this point are Rand, Perrin, Matt, Egween, Nyneave, Moiraine, amd Lan. Moiraine came into the two rivers seeking Boys of a certian age. All three of the boys Rand, Matt, and Perrin were born within weeks of each other. On the Celebration called Winter Night. The village was attacked by Trollocks, Beasts with Goat feet and Hair all over their body and wolf muzzels. The only reason the village was not destroyed and overrun was because of Moiraine and her being able to channel the One Power. Yup thats right Its Magic, Only women can channel it safly, the men who can go insane because of the taint the dark one put on it as a counter blow to the Dragon Reborns attack on him.(read thebook it goes more indepth on this point). Moiraine is an Aes sedai Those that can control the power. Rand and the Other boys as well as Egween leave the Two Rivers with Moiraine and Lan her Warder. They must stop at Baerlon a city. That is when the Wisdom from their vilage catches up to them. Nyneave demands to take them back the Emonds feild, but The Boys and Egween know that if they do the Trollocs will reappear. So thay continue on. The Trollocks chase them to a city known as Shadar Logoth. Matt steals a daggar out of the Ruins of this ancent city. Anything that is taken out of the walls of the city is tainted and will make whom ever carries it tainted, suspicus of everyone and withdrawn. They are seperated Matt and rand go together, Perrin and Egween escape across the river to safty. They meet a man named Elias, and his wolfs. This is when perrin discovers he can talk to the wolves like Elias can. Matt and Perrin go to Camlyan and by this time Matt is pretty far gone, he wont even get out of bed. Rand goes out to see the false dragon. As he climes up a wall to see him after he does he tries to see a last glimps of him and falls over the wall. There he meets the Doughter heir of Andor and the First Prince Elayne and Gawyn. When he gets back to the inn he is staying at he finds the rest of the people from Emonds field there Perrin Egween Nyneave. Also Moiraine and Lan. They go to The ways with the help of an Oger, that Rand met. They go to The Great Blight. Finding the Green Man, and the Eye Of The World. Before they can go inside and use it they are approched by strangers. Ahhh they are forsaken. Rand is chased by one and he kills it by using the one power. He also Thinks he kills Ba,alzamon the dark one. He then goes into the Eye of the World and finds The horn of Valere and a banner of the Dragon.
Rating: Summary: A word about the Aes Sedai Review: Since so many have reviewed the overall content, I want to add that this author has created a very interesting spiritual milieu -- the world of the Aes Sedai, a group of women who have been specifically trained in the ways of spirit and then move into the world to assist. As in all "religions" there are those who hold to the pure intent and others who are seduced by power, authority, and the other hazards of assuming responsibility of a higher nature. The thread detailing the history of the Aes Sedai was my favorite part of the books!!! The Wheel weaves as it will.
Rating: Summary: This book is one of the best damn books I've ever read! Review: This book was excellent. Not only does it show you the story that is taking place, but it also gives you an incredible amount of history before it, explaining why things are the way they are. In this book, there was a huge war with the Dark One(a guy like Satan) 3000+ years ago. It was caused by a darkfriend(devil worshiper)who opened a bore(a hole) in the Dark One's eternal prison, which enabled him(the Dark One) to affect events in the world. The world was changed forever. Now, as it was said it would happen in the prophecies, the Dragon(the hero who led the army that sealed the bore in the Dark One's prison) has been reborn. Also, the Dark One's prison is weakening, and only the Dragon Reborn can close the bore in the prison. This was the first fantasy book I ever read. I finished it in ten days, reading about 80 pages a day. The characters are all well developed, and the world is depicted excellently. If you're looking for a series, or even a book(though it'll be damn hard not to read the whole series), which involves no items needed magic, fighting, love, and every other thing, read The Eye of the World, and the rest of The Wheel of Time.
Rating: Summary: THE fantasy-series of all time Review: The Wheel of Time is the best series I have ever read. It has what other books lack: Originality and depth of characters. Other fantasy-books use the old boring elf/orcs/dragons kind of story, and I really hate those books. Jordan creates an entire world with political intrigue and fairly realistic characters (Even if I think that the main characters rand, mat and perrin are incredebly stupid sometimes). In this the first book it seems as if Jordan is trying out some techniques. The following books get better and better. Oh, if anyone wants to discuss the Wheel with me, then go ahead and mail me. I have read all the books (1-7) six or seven times.
Rating: Summary: Pretty good stuff... Review: First of all, for all of you who find it necisary to critisize the reviewers as well as the book, get a life. Live with the fact that we all have our own opinions, and don't freak out if someone doesn't happen to agree with yours. I found tEotW to be a masterfully created story with surprising plot twists and (for the most part) well drawn out charactors. Jordan has created a world of fantasy that one can use to make the longest of car trips bearable. While, yes, he has made most of the female roles one-dimenional and highly predictable, I think he has done a fine job illustrating his charactor's personalities. I suggest that anyone who enjoys reading about the classic plot of good vs. evil, magic, monsters, and warriors pick up this book and at least give it a shot.
Rating: Summary: Best series I have ever read, sans doubt. Review: It was a very interesting book, with a full rich world. I have read all the books in the series numerous times and cannot decide which is my favourite. The book is set in a civilisation that compares with about 1000 AD. Except that women have important roles in society. I recommend the entire series to everyone.
Rating: Summary: An interesting observation and a short review. Review: First, a comment regarding the individual from Washington who feels it necessary to lash out at those readers who did not enjoy this book as much as he did: he claims that ALL of those who rated the book less than 6 call themselves "A Reader." Upon counting there are 12 reviews that rate the Wheel of Time series a 6 or less, and only 3 of them refer to themselves as "A Reader." Perhaps this says something about those who actually liked these books. I found the first three books (that was as much as I was able to endure) to be quite tedious. While there were some interesting characters and plot developments in the first book, the series continued to stretch itself far too thin and wide. Jordan loses his appeal as he tries to expand the scope of his series far beyond its strength. A disappointment.
Rating: Summary: highly overrated Review: character detailing was good, about the only plus i can give to this novel (and sequels). The characters were thoroughly described (though RJordan could use better names for his characters) The rest of Wheel of Time is a highly overrated rehash of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Halfmen, Fades, Fetch, call them what you will, are nothing more than glorified Nazghul. The black rider archetype has been abused and misused over and over and over again. The spark of innovative genius that was "Trolloc" seems to me to be nothing more than a pitiful excuse for a unique monster that Jordan needed to populate his vaguely described universe. What is wrong with using the classic monsters such as trolls and orcs and goblins and the like? There are many events in the Eye of the World that sound suspiciously like events in Lord of the Rings. If you are looking for exciting swordfights and fireballs, this is not the series for you. Jordan does not know how to narrate fight scenes. He does not even try. However, if you are into long and tedious journeys, and tons of girlish chatter and VERY CONTRIVED and pointless secrecy and hush-hush (i'm sick of Lan and Moiraine's secrecy in all of their quests and journeys) and weak phrases ("Light!" "Burn me") and such (did i say long and tedious journeys already?), this is definitely worth passing your time and money on. Oh yeah, there is an overabundance of useless characters that he introduces and that fade away into obscurity and you wonder what the heck he brought them in for. After reading the first novel, I still had little idea of what his world was like, how it was structured, how big the continents were, seasons and such. (heck, trolloc descriptions were vague enough) It's supposed to be ages upon ages, so where are the darn maps? There seems to be a strong women's front in Eye of the World and subsequent novels, all of which is nice and fresh...IF Jordan knew when to pull the reins on it. Don't get me wrong, I like women strong-willed and with more important roles in the story (something which Tolkien lacked, I'll admit), but Jordan is bordering on trampling the male gender. Maybe if all those pointless and stupid praises from critics hadn't been quoted on the cover, back cover and insides of the book....i might have thought better of this book (and series). As it was, my expectations were falsely raised at the start and brutally shattered at the lame ending of Eye of the World. Only my friend's enthusiasm kept me reading (and the fact that i needed some sort of fantasy novel escape from the daily paperwork). I'd rather read Tolkien all over again. I'd get back to the classic Dragonlance novels (not the new ones).
Rating: Summary: It's too darn good Review: This book (and the rest of the series) is too darn good. After plowing through EotW, I had to wait and wait and wait for the library to get a copy of the next one for me. Tis continued on until I finished the seventh book, and now I'm waiting a whole year for the next one, which I will speed through, and then wait some more. The bottom line: Don't read it unless you like waiting.
Rating: Summary: Opened my eyes to another world of maguc and passion. Review: One of the best epics written that I have come across in a long time. A beautiful new world in fantastic detail. Well, I'm addicted.
