Rating: Summary: A Favorite from Childhood Review: This compelling historic fiction tells the story of life for a young colonist in pre-state Michigan. He leaves home for adventure and finds it near Fort Mackinaw, Mackinac Island and the surrounding Lake Huron. The British are at war with the French and the Native Americans are allied variously with each. The young voyager--in order to survive--must in turn hide his red hair and freckles (by staining his skin with nuts/berries). His narrow escapes and exciting adventures make this ideal reading for people of all ages. I last read this in grade school and am glad that it's still in print.
