Rating: Summary: The Maze Review: This book is about a boy who is fourteen years old. His name is Rick Walker and he is a very troublesome teenager. A police officer had seen him throwing rocks at a stop sign. There Rick goes to court and the judge sends him to a school program for six months. He goes to Blue Canyon it is sort of a boot camp with training. Rick stayed there for a while but his friends that he met there told him to run away from this sort of like prison. So one night he decided to run after they were supposedly to be asleep then. He made it alive outside, but he didn't know what else to do. I liked this book because it has lots of suspense. "His life was nothing but an endless succession of dead ends." This book will make you read this book all day long. This book is one of my favorite's out of all of the books I've read in my whole life. This book is adventurous because he meets this man who hang glides like a bird. Rick wants to try hang gliding also too. One of my other favorite parts in this book is when he stays with the man. His name is Lon and met him when he [snuck] into the trunk of his truck. ""Get out of my truck,"" he yelled. That part was kind of funny. It was funny because it took Lon a very long time to discover that Rick was hiding in his the back of his truck. My favorite part in this book is when Rick finally is able to hang glide. Rick definitely makes an improvement. Rick wasn't able to even float in the middle of the book. But, Rick keeps trying and never gives up. He always has hope and helps him strive to what he has to accomplish. This book has very fun to read and interesting to read. I would recommend this book to other students.

Rating: Summary: Lots of action, plus good characters Review: This book kept my interest all the way through, mostly because I liked the character Rick and saw how unfairly everyone had treated him. Plus, you learn a lot about condors and hang gliding when Rick solves a mystery involving two vicious intruders. I really liked the suspense and all the action.

Rating: Summary: Lost in the Middle of Nowhere Review: Utah's natural beauty is the setting for Will Hobbs'The Maze, a story of a 90's wondering teen who must find who he is and what to make of himself.Hobbs'descriptive imagery and similarity to real life makes the book come to life to the reader. Rick Walker was abandoned by his mother and raised by his grandma, who died recently of illness. Rick was tossed around from foster homes to a foster school untill he ended up in court and was sent to Blue Canyon, a detention center. But his stay was cut short after he discovered life threatening corruption by his superiors. He escaped into the desert only to stumble onto a series of canyons called The Maze and Lon Peregrino a bird biologist who raises and releases the endangered Condor. Rick becomes amazed at the birds' beauty and befriends the strange yet kind man. Lon becomes like Rick's father for the few weeks he is with him. Everything goes smoothly for a while and Rick even learns how to hang glide, until a group of mysterious men show up. Lon says that they come to search for Native American pottery, but soon it turns into more than just a search for treasure. All of Lon and Rick's radios to communicate to the out side world disappear and one of the Condors gets attacked by the treasure hunters' dog. An intent to get rid of Lon and Rick in order to have the entire canyon to scearch for pottery. The suppense-drama identifies with youth who don't know who they are or how to get by, and is recommended to all of thoses who can relate to this type of life.
Rating: Summary: The Maze Review: When we were reading The Maze by Will Hobbs we were blown away. The characteristics of the characters and the deep description of the plot were stellar. In our opinion, Will Hobbs who is the author of Far North, is a spectacular author who has won many awards. The main characters of the book are Lon Peregrino and Rick Walker. Lon is a middle-aged man that grew up with no parents. His job is to work for the Condor Project supported by the government. His job is at Canyonlands National Park, which is where the Maze is located. The Maze is a group of canyons that join together to make a large confusing array of twists and turns. Rick is a 14-year-old boy with no parents. He was arrested for vigorously whipping rocks at a stop sign. The whole cause for this was the death of his grandmother and he obviously took it hard. He went to court and ended up going to the strictest confines in America, Blue Canyon Detention Center. When he was in juvenile he worked out and became strong. He also read about flying a lot. That is his dream, to fly. He received a message that his name was on the cigarettes. In jail terms that means you are going to be beaten because sometimes people say that they will kill for a cigarette and that's how the saying came about. Rick was frightened. He had to do something. He decided to try to escape. At night he hopped over the fence and on the way down he slashed his face on the wicked barbed wire. It created a large white scar. He hitchhiked with three people and ended up at Canyonlands. He was at Lon's campsite. He immediately got in trouble by stealing Lon's car. But he didn't get very far on that rough terrain. He had to turn around and go reason with Lon. After Lon learned a little about him and noticed how similar their lives were. Lon let him stay. Rick was going to help Lon with his job. Everything was going well except for one thing. Carlile, Gundersen, and their pit bull were up to no good. When Rick and Lon were out teaching Rick how to fly a hang glider Carlile and his crew came to Lon's site and stole many objects. But that is not all their up to. Rick finds something illegal about them and Carlile finds out. They will do anything to keep out of jail. They will steal any communication devices, kill condors, and maybe even murder Rick and Lon. But to find out what Carlile and Gundersen will do and if Rick will ever make it home you must read The Maze. If you like adventure stories, action stories, hang gliding, or even just hanging around outdoors this book is for you! The main point the author tries to tell us is to always follow you dreams and life is a maze, it takes to many twists and unexpected turns.(...)
Rating: Summary: The Maze Review: White Heath Sixth Grade The Maze by Will Hobbs The Maze is a new Trivia Pie Adventure book. It's also a Rebecca Caudal for 2001. This was an adventure book because the main character faces a life and death situation. Rick and Lon Perigrino are in way over their heads. A gas station owner, his side kick, and his dog can do more damage than presumed and were underestimated. You can tell that this book is an adventure because within the first 50 pages Rick,a fourteen year old foster kid, goes to a juvenile prison escapes from it, and hitchhikes/ stows away all the way from Las Vegas to Utah, and steals a truck. That's only in the first 50. Rick encounters an old man who was kind of like himself when he was a kid. He was a foster, too. They were so much alike that Rick actually enjoyed talking to the old man who was nicknamed Lon Perigrino. They talked, but not so much chit-chat that they canceled out its adventure theme. See, Lon lived in Canyonlands National Park where they where releasing American Condors. The only time they really talked was when they were watching for the condor's next move. Another thing that the two had in common is that they both had flying dreams. These dreams lead to Lon telling Rick about hang gliding, and mentioned that he had a hang glider. The next thing Rick knew he was addicted to gliding. He had to hang glide. Lon finally asked Rick if he wanted to help drive him up to the cliff and watch him hang glide. Rick was very happy to accept. After a while Rick rode with Lon, and then Rick was hang gliding on his own. The other thing that makes this book an adventure book was because it had bad guys. Let's face it, every adventure story's gotta have a bad guy or two, somehow or another. There's not that many more ways to have a main character face a life or death situation. The bad guys in this story were Nuke Carlile, his pit bull, Jasper, and his sidekick, Gunderson....This book is a true adventure story at heart. It has all those qualities of an adventure, and some others, too. I really enjoyed the action in this book and it kept me on the edge of my seat. All in all it's a action packed book.
Rating: Summary: Maze Review: Will Hobbs really out did himself this time. My 8yr old son and I have been reading all of Hobbs' books and this one has to be our favorite. Your heart really goes out to Rick and all he has been through. Meeting Lon was such a wonderful thing to happen to Rick. I think Lon really needed Rick as well. Since finishing The Maze my son has become much more interested in condors, so much so that he is trying to get his den to become "The Condor" patrol once they move to Weblos. Thank you Will Hobbs for once again touching us in your books.
