Summary: shame about the bad translation
Review: As most people that wrote a review about this book, I read it (many times) in Dutch a long time ago.
The book itself is absolutely brilliant, but I was quite shocked by the useless translation.
It must be very hard to read for people that don't speak Dutch, because of a lot of direct translations.

I am aware that this translation is out of print and hopefully, with the (English spoken) film coming up end of this year, it will be followed up with a proper English translation.
Then the whole world should read it - and all the rest of Thea Beckman's books!

Summary: Thea Beckman is the best!
Review: For 5 years I know Thea Beckman is simply the best author of children books, because she takes you to forgotten times as if you are living in that century. Crusade in jeans is one of her best books and has been given an award in the Netherlands for best historical children book around. When you read it you live in the crusade and go through an experience you'll never forget.

Summary: BRILIANT HISTORICALLY BASED ADVENTURE STORY
Review: For most Dutch people this book is a classic and has been read by the majority of youngsters. The book takes you in a easy to read way to the childeren's crusade, which actually happened. However by adding some contemporary issues to the story, Thea Beckman makes it a joy to read. Although she has reached a very respectable age by now, Thea has no intention to stop doing reseach on interesting historical events and to transform them into a exciting book.

Summary: Best historical children's novel ever!
Review: I consider this work one of the finest written children's novels (i.e. age 10 and up) of our time. Thrilling and touching as it is, the story remains compelling from cover to cover, even when reading it for the tenth time. Moreover, I greatly appreciate the educational value that is offered to the reader as a bonus. In preparation for writing the book, the author had spend nearly two years of conducting in-depth historical research, including numerous field trips to relevant locations across Europe. In 1974 "Crusade in Jeans" received the European award for the best historical children's novel.

The challenges that the stray children face during their journey through medieval Europe, seem to be as numerous as they are various. Dolf is convinced that the only way to successfully cope with protracted hardships such as the constant threat of starvation, devastating diseases and ferocious raids, is by organizing the children's army as effectively as possible. He will need all of his no-nonsense wits and 20th century knowledge to make it so. Yet in the course of the story, Dolf comes to realize that in the end it is true friendship, hope and shared dreams that give people the strength to succeed and to overcome life greatest challenges. Enjoy!

Summary: One of the best children's books I've ever read.
Review: I recently read the book again, and enjoyed it at least as much as I did when I first read it, some 20 years ago. The concept of transporting a 15 y/o boy back in time gives a great opportunity to compare the modern, 20th century, science-oriented society with the religion and supersition dominated 13th century. A concept that was very well worked out by Ms Thea Beckman.

Summary: Better Translation
Review: I was assigned this book to read in a Dutch class and absolutely fell in love with it. When I borrowed and English version from the library, I found that a lot of the humor and warmth was lost in translation. I wish that the translator had used more colloquial English and relied less on word-for-word. Still, as really very few people speak Dutch, I have to reccomend the English version as it is still a fantastic time travel adventure.
