Throughout the book you experience the horrors of walking down the streets of French Town with half a face! Francis goes into a depression after letting his true love down when she needed him the most. He joined the military hoping to bring an end to his life. His chance came when a grenade lands in his platoon's bunker, with no hesitation he dives on the grenade. He saved many lives and even his own! Even after receiving a Silver Star for his heroic effort, Francis is convinced he is not a hero. Now he is on a new mission, to kill the man that destroyed his life! When I first started reading this novel I was immediately enthralled. The author's style of first person writing makes this book fun, easy to read and understand. Although the book is small, I feel that it's descriptive and to the point.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Haunting and riveting. Hard to put down, hard to forget. Review: From page one, readers will be drawn into the life of Francis Cassavant, a vivid, tragic character about whom the author makes us care deeply. Expect to cringe at times, expect to become angry, even to shed a few tears as you read this book. It is beautifully written, but the subject matter is not beautiful. However, it has stayed with me, making me question the true nature of heroism, making those poor young soldiers who fought for our country seem very real, and very human. Cormier's fans will not be disappointed in this book. New readers won't be either.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Cormier proves his talent once again in this remarkable book Review: From the riveting opening paragraph through each tension filled chapter, HEROES is a book which will keep readers engaged. More importantly, it is a story which will make readers question their assumptions about war, honor, courage, and friendship. The best books for all agres of readers raise more questions than they answer. Cormier provides this type of reading experience for young adults. Students who have viewed SAVING PRIVATE RYAN will be searching for books about war. This is one teachers and librarians and parents need to recommend.

I like this book alot Courmier uses amzing description that allows you to see what is happening in the book. You can almost imagine what is going on. All of his books especially this one are original plot summaries and not to many books are like his, which makes his novels even better to read. I like the main character Francis Cassavant because he has one wish and he doesnt forget that. He had his face blown off and he wants to find the person who did it, his child hood hero. Other than the antagonist the book is very good. I think the antagonist ,Larry LaSalle, ruin the book he doesnt play a good part. I wish he would of got his face blown off, but it didnt work out that way. Other than that it was a great book.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: HEROES Review: Heroes is an intriguing book, which will keep you on your toes. As a reader, there are many things that will be left to the imagination. This keeps the reader interested and eager to turn each page. The story revolves around the main character, Francias Cassavant, an eighteen year old war veteran of World War II. He forged his birth certificate to get into the war two years earlier to escape the horrible thing that happened the night before he left his home, Frenchtown. Francias, while in the war, had attempted to take his own life by falling on a grenade. However, this was mistaken by others as an act of bravery to save his fellow troops. As a result he received the silver star for bravery, but was he really a hero? Obviously, the grenade did not do him in...however now he is faceless. This adds an interesting twist to the book. He has no nose, ears, teeth, and is even without cheekbones. Francias is still somewhat thankful for what happened that fateful day in the war however, because it allows him to be anonymous when he returns home. He had made a terrible mistake and was torturing himself day and night about it. The book does not come right out and tell what happened, and this aids in keeping the reader interested interested. Francias has decided that he is going to make it right, and being anonymous is something he needs to be able to seek out a fellow silver star recipient, and fulfill his mission... his last mission ever. Robert Cormier is an excellent author who will keep your eyes glued to each word in this book where the pages seem to turn themselves. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece of literature and am sure that any reader would. . I strongly recommend that you read Heroes.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Heroes Review: Heroes is the story of a young man who has just returned home from World War II with completely disfiguring facial injuries. After lying about his age so he could enlist, Francis Cassavant found out just how horrible war really was, especially when he earned the Silver Star for bravery by falling on a grenade. Did he really do it to save others, or did he have another reason? I found this to be a book that gives us more than just a story. It gave me, as the reader, thoughts to ponder, not only about the cruelty of war, but also about the flaws in each of us.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: Heroes-maybe Review: Heroes was about an 18 year old boy who had been injured in WWII. This book was well-written, but I think the focus on war is lost through the rest of the plot. I don't think the actions of the main character are realistic. I know I would be angry and/or depressed if I ended up without a face. I think the main character is holding on to anger that would have been painted over by the war he was in. I have read Cormier before, and this is not one of his best.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Heroes, by Robert Cormier Review: Heroes, by Robert Cormier, is a tragic story of a young man from a small town. Francis Joseph Cassavant goes to fight in World War II because of some things he has encountered in his childhood. While in the war he loses most of his face. Now coming back home with no one recognizing him, he has a mission, to kill his childhood hero. Francis Joseph Cassavant lost his parents at a young age. Joseph was forced to live with his uncle. Francis was quiet and not one who got into trouble. In fifth grade Francis met Nicole Renard. He loved her from the moment he set his eyes upon her. Too shy to talk to her, he hangs back, watching her and hoping some day he will be able to talk to her without making a fool of himself. Francis, who doesn’t fit in anywhere, finds out that the new rec center that has opened might be the perfect place to fit in and make some friends. Francis now spends all his time at the rec center and makes good friends with the owner Larry LaSalle. Larry introduces Francis to the one thing Frances is good at; Table Tennis. Francis now plays table tennis non-stop and Larry puts together a table tennis tournament. Francis wins the tournament and Nicole congratulates him. Francis and Nicole began talking and continue to talk throughout the next few weeks. They start dating and Francis remains close friends with Larry LaSalle. World War II starts and Larry LaSalle is one of the first to sign up for war. Francis looks up to him but has no desire to go to war. Besides, he is not even old enough! Francis and Nicole continue to date for several months. Time passes, and eventually, Larry returns from the war with a Silver Star. The town decides to throw a party for Larry. This is the night that Francis Joseph Cassavant finds out that Larry LaSalle is not the wonderful person he had thought. Because of Larry’s actions that night, Francis goes off to war, loses his girlfriend, becomes disfigured, and decides he must kill his childhood hero. I like the way this book was written. It was easy to follow and read. The only thing I did not like is the lack of strong character detail. I do like the way the author went back and forth between chapters telling about the main characters childhood and then the present time. This book will appeal to pre-teens and teenagers because it gets right to the point, not going into great detail on little things.

Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Check This Out! Review: Heroes, by Robert Cormier, is not the best book in the world. Francis Cassavant is a person who doesn't like his life a whole lot. He wants to die but does not want to commit suicide. So he joins the army hoping he will get shot or blown up. In conclusion Francis ends up falling on a grenade. This blows his face off except for his eyes and three caves. Two for his nose and one for his mouth. Since he has lived he is on a mission. To kill his former small town hero. The theme for this book is bravery because it takes a big deal of guts to jump on a grenade and to try and kill a town hero. I would not reccomend this book to any one who does not like a book unless it has action/ adventure. Robert Cormier does not stay on the main plot and gets you lost from chapter to chapter. He does not show any attempt to use show action any where through out the whole book.
