Summary: A Fantastic Read
Review: "Heroes" by Robert Cormier is, in my opinion, a great book for young adults to read. It has mystery, suspense, and a very interesting take on a moral dilemma. It is a fascinating story about a young man returning home from World War II. His war experiences have changed his life drastically. He no longer has a face because of a grenade and because of that he is no longer recognizable in his home town.
To look at Francais Cassavant you would think that the war had destroyed him, but the truth is he had been destroyed before he even enlisted. He had lost the only person in the world he loved Nicole Renard. The worst part is that he knows that he could have helped her when she needed it.
Robert Cormier is a fantastic writer. I felt every pain that Francais felt. I wanted to seek revenge on Larry LaSalle and I also understood why Francais hated himself.
It was interesting from beginning to end. I liked how it made reference to a war that the kids today are so far removed from and taken to a place where they get an idea of how horrible it was. I liked a lot the moral question of what a hero is and what makes a person one.
I would definitely recommend this book.

Summary: Hero or Enemy
Review: A review by Jill

Heroes was a very interesting book. At first I thought it was going to be about a man in the war, but this takes place after the war. Francis Cassavant lost his face in the war. When he arrived in his home town, nobody recognized him. He decided to return to his home town so he could see someone that he wanted revenge on. As a child, Francis wasn't very popular, until Larry LaSalle came along. Larry helped Francis learn how to play table tennis, which made him meet Nicole. One day, Larry did something terrible to Nicole, and Francis didn't do anything to stop it. This is why Francis joined the army, he thought maybe if he got lucky, he would get killed in the war, but no luck.

Heroes had points where it wasn't very interesting and kept leading on to nothing. Although, it was easy to read, and hard to put down. It didn't take me long to finish, because everything lead to another, making me want to keep reading it. If you are into war or revenge movies, I would suggest Heroes by Robert Cormier.

Summary: a chilling novel, great plot, kept my attention
Review: Another book from Robert Cormier that puts chills down your spine. I read this book in one sitting, I simple could not put it down. It's dramatic plot holds your attention.

Like Cormier's I am the Cheese, the narrator swiches back and forth, almost every other chapter a flash back.

The book opens up with the narrator's emotionless explaining of his face, the ears almost gone, the eye brows burned off and the nose two holes that dripped mucus frequently. He wears a bandana and a bandage around his face to conceil what he looks like not only from others, but maybe from himself, for who he has become and the guilt he feels for not helping Nicole.

The narrator reflects on his life before he entered the war, back when he was a normal guy. He talks about his obssesion starting in the seventh grade that had always been love. By the end of the book his simple and normal childhood is broken.

But then the other chapters are placed after the grenade, after the war, when he seeks vengence on who he once saw as a hero.

From the outside this novel looks like the story of a psychopathic teenage killer, but as you read and begin to know the narrator you understand his feelings. In some odd and eerie way you can understand why he does the things he does, why he feels the way he feels and why he has such anger.

This is another amazing novel from Cormier, one not to be surpassed.

Review: Book Review: Heroes

In the book Heroes by Robert Cormier you get stuck to it, because you try to uncover this person's past to find out how his face was blown off.
This book is about a boy named Francis Joseph Cassavant that went to war under age because he had a .. wish [to end his life]. He wanted to [end his life] because his childhood hero Larry LaSalle tried to [harm] the girl he loved and he didn't do anything about it. Then he went to say sorry to the girl and she was mad and refused to talk to him. So when he was in action he took the opportunity of jumping on an [explosive] to put his life to an end, but he survived without his face and saved the lives of his friends. Then he came back to Frenchtown to [destroy] Larry with the gun he got for being in the service.
I think this book has an outstanding story to it. This story grabs you every second you read it. To me this book is cool because not a lot of books impress me but this one makes me speechless. I really recommend you to read this if you like these kind of stories.

Summary: Wow!
Review: By the beginning of the first chapter, we know that Francis Cassavant: 1. Has had his face blown off in WWII and received a medal for heroism 2. Is thinking about a girl, Nicole 3. Is praying for the man he intends to murder

How could anyone not want to read on?

I am a fan of Robert Cormier's earlier books (The Chocolate War, We All Fall Down, etc.) and read this one expecting the same creepiness that permeated his more recent works (especially his latest, Tenderness, told from the viewpoint of a serial killer). I was surprised (pleasantly) to be wrong. While this is certainly a suspense novel, it is much more. The characters are well-developed, and as always, I love Cormier's way of showing the good side, even of his villains. The character of Francis, so tough and steely and determined in the first chapter, will surprise the reader, revealing himself gradually as an idealistic kid, back from being disfigured in a war he never should have been allowed to fight (he was 15 when he enlisted). The best part: You may think you know what the book's surprises will be, but you're probably wrong.

A great book!

Summary: The Heroes Of Our Lives
Review: Don`t let this book mislead you into thinking that this takes place in a war type plot.It is said to be impossible to live the life of a normal man without a face, but as this person describes the events he seems to be a normal man. He describes the life of a normal man as being himself, but as the story progresses the reader is led on to the fact that he is not normal at all. I enjoyed this book because of the fact that he tells the life of a man that is different from all others but lives the same.

Summary: Consider this book carefully....
Review: Everybody has their own opinion of a bad book and, well, this is mine. The author totally goes off course with this book, and the chapters start off weirdly and it makes you totally confused. There is no "adventure" whatsoever in this book. There is repitition of the same idea or sentence over and over and has no forshadowing. If this book sounds good to you then I suggest you read it, but some other books by the same author might be far more interesting!
