I was amazed at how many metaphors, layering, etc. I had missed! If you read the book for entertainment and plot, you won't be dissapointed; but you'll be stunned if you look deeper. The metaphor of "holes" has so many possible interpretations! As Stanley digs a five-foot hole in the desert, he "digs" deeper in himself, the past, and human nature. Some of his discoveries are amazing. The book is narrated very sparsely and leaves much thought to the reader. (At one point, when pondering God and a supposed curse that dried up a lake, it actually asks "You decide. Whom did God punish?") It's filled with humor and fantastic storytelling. Each time you peel back a layer, you'll find more. Holes is powerful.

He weaves together different storys into one book then brings them all together at the end for a stunning finish. His character portrayal is amazing. Stanley Yelnats gets sent to Camp Green Lake Detention Center after being arrested for having some old shoes he found. The shoes he found just happened to belong to a famous baseball player. At Camp Green Lake there is no Lake just a dried up pit were the boys made to dig holes that are Round and are 5 feet deep and 5 Feet across. Soon Stanley finds out that they not diging holes just for character but the Warren of the camp is looking for something. But what? Read the book and be swept off you feet to Camp Green Lake where comedy, mystery and suspense are waiting around every hole.

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: The Hole that keeps on going Review: The book Holes is one of the best i have ever read. Between the plot and the characters this book was great! the funniest part is when you found out that Stanley's dad was trying to find a way to recycle old sneakers. This book is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats. He is a kid that is overweight and made fun of because of that. One day after fishing out his notebook from the toilet and walking out of school a pair of shoes came flying down from the sky. That made Stanley think that is was destiny so that his dad would discover how to recycle old shoes. So he took the and ran. A police man\woman stopped him and asked him why he was running so Stanley showed them the shoes. Then the next thing he knew he was in a courtroom and being asked if he wanted to either go to Camp Green Lake or jail. So then Stanley knew who to blame............ "his no-good-rotten-pig stealing great-great grandfather". So of course ended up at Green Lake. ETC.

It is on the Accelerated Reader list for our school. The adults in this book are terrifying. Although this book has an appealing sort of dark humor that may attract kids, I wouldn't recommend it to a young audience. Perhaps 5th graders would be sophisticated enough to understand the strange sadistic fantasy played out by the "Camp" leaders. The subplot that takes place in the olden days is woven throughout the book, and has merit.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Mind Boggling Coincidences, Great Plot! Review: The story-Stanley is sentenced to go to Camp Green Lake when he is innocent. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. It's like a desert. "Bad boys" go there to "build character by digging dirt". Each day, Stanley, and everyone else there, must dig one whole that is 5 ft deep and 5 ft all the way around. At first it's hard, but he gets used to it. He meets new friends there, everyone has a nickname. He soon discovers that the people that work at Camp Green Lake aren't just making "bad boys" dig to build character, but because the Warden is looking for sumthing. But what could the Warden be looking for? What will Stanley find and decide along his "trecerous" adventure? Comments-This book was great! It had one of the best plots ever! Everything soon adds up and connects in some way! There was a barely a boring moment! I could hardly put the book down! It's very rare that I would react this way toward any book or even finish a book on my own will in such a short time. I would have finished hte amazing book sooner if I had more time to. It has a satisfying ending too! Throught out the book, the character and the author makes sarcastic and FUNNY comments! I actually laughed out loud several times! READ IT!
