Review: A friend of mine who teaches 3rd or 4th grade read this book to her class, and recommended it highly. It sounded interesting enough from the description on the back cover. I was expecting it to be some fun, light reading and Holes didn't disappoint. The story is fascinating. There's a great dual storyline going where it flips between the story of the boys at Camp Green Lake, and the story of Kissin' Kate Barlow, an outlaw who lived there a hundred years before. The book also touches on some deeper issues. There is a subtle discussion of the injustice of racism, for example. And one of the boys was homeless and talks about being shunned and mistreated. I liked this element of social consciousness. It's presented in a way that doesn't beat you over the head with its message but still makes its point. The end of the book ties everything together in a nice little bow: bad guys thwarted, good guys win. It's a delicious little story.

The story is not overly complicated, but it has a nice and smooth way of combining the present actions with historical flashbacks. Allthough the outcome is very satisfying, I will especially remember the pleasant read to get there. Maybe it won't be a classic, but if I ever meet the writer, I'd definately buy him a drink for the time I've spent at his Lake...

A boy Stanley is falsely accused of commiting a crime. He is sent to a judge and the judge sends him to a camp for boys. But this is no ordinary camp. The counselors there make them dig huge holes everyday! But Stanely and his friend find out the real reason that has a huge twist. You have to pay attention to the story because it switches back and forth between two stories and can be confusing! Over all its entertaining and a page turner because you want to find out whether Stanely survives in the desert. Everone thinks he's dead but he comes back to tell the true story of why they are digging holes.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Unbelievable! Review: Stanley Yelnats gets thrown into court and sentenced to boot camp after a shoe falls on his head. Sound crazy? It's not. Plagued by his great great grandfather, Stanley is convicted of stealing a shoe of a famous baseball player that was being sold for charity. He goes to Camp Green Lake, a place that sounds nice but is awful. Boys who attend Green Lake (it is kind of like juvy) have to dig a 5 foot deep and 5 foot wide hole everyday in tough dirt in the blazing sun. A series of events that makes up this story sends him on a journey to the mountains, with a friend he will never forget. If you like lizards, the color orange (you'll understand, and a flat out good reading, opt for Holes by Louis Sachar.

During his stay at the Detention Center, Stanley becomes best friends with Zero. Zero helps Stanley dig holes and in exchange, Stanley teaches Zero to read. Stanley is able to learn a lot about the curse that was put on his family because of his friendship with Zero. Sachar's novel is filled with suspense and surprise! I highly recommend this book! It is an excellent story that should be enjoyed by readers of all ages!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Unique Review: This book is unlike any other children's book I've ever read. The plot and the characters draw you in---you'll find yourself reading this in one sitting. You can actually feel the heat in Camp Green Lake and the thirst you get from digging holes all day in the hot sun. The characters are incredibly distinct and you discover, as Stanley does, how you can never really depend on anyone else (and yet how we all need one another). There are no light moments in this book but it's not a depressing book. Buy it and you won't regret it!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: 'Holes' has no holes Review: Stanley Yelnats is cursed by his family's history. He gets wrongly conviced of a crime and is sent to a juvenile detention center in the dry Texas desert where the residents must dig holes all day, every day. What Stanley digs up, however, is more than what the warden bargained for. A wonderfully painted dark comedy, this story keeps you guessing until the end.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Great Great Book Review: Next to Harry Potter, this is one of the best books i have ever read. Lois Sachar may be one of the best authors. This book never lets you put it down, once you start, you just gotta kknow what happens next. The story is great, good twists and turns, and sometimes it can get confusing but lois did a good job at switching from the present to the past. This book is just great for all ages, great story, great author, great book all together. This is one of my highest recomended books, i don't think theres many out there that wont enjoy this book. ((El DiAbLo))
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: A good book but not a great book. Review: Holes is a well written book with an interesting if implausible story line. It is a coming of age story for two boys, Stanley Yelnats and Hector Zeroni who have been sent to a juvenile detention facility called Camp Green Lake. In Texas, where this story takes place, many prisons are privately run and Camp Green Lake is no different. As enjoyable as the story is to read, the multitude of coincidences and apparent total lack of over sight of Camp Green Lake by the state of Texas make the plot unbelievable. However, it does have an upbeat ending that most kids will enjoy.
