Summary: Review on Holes...
Review: Stanley Yelnats ends up in a juvenile detention center ironically named "Camp Green Lake." The lake dried up a hundred years ago, because of a drought. Each inmate at Camp Green Lake must dig a hole each day, 5 feet deep, 5 feet wide. In the story, we do not know anyone from other groups, only Group D (the one Stanley ends up in) so we don't know other characters' names, and there are supposedly more than 2 counselors, but we really only know about "Mr. Sir" and Mr. Pendanski. The Warden's name isn't known until the near end, or if you have a good sense of clues when reading. The mere reason Stanley was arrested and sent there is because a police officer found him carrying some shoes that Stanley did not know were being auctioned. When our friend is digging some holes, we find out his great-great-grandfather's story. I do not want to bring you ahead, but, we never find out about some problems (e.g. who Barf Bag is, what happens to the camp...) Anyway, read the book. This is a good choice for a reader.

Review: I had to read this book over and over again because I loved it so much! I made sure all my friends read it so that they could enjoy it too! It all starts with poor, fat, lonely, Stanley Yelnats. As the book goes on it also tells you the story of Stanley's no good pig stealing rotten great great grandfather. That is when the curse began. It was all Stanley's great great grandfather's fault. Somehow Stanley is wrongly accused of stealing an Atheles shoue! Poor Stanley had the choice of child's jail OR Camp Greenlake. In the past Stanley's family had never been able to send him to camp. So he chooses camp. But, when he gets there he finds out that he must dig a hole 6 feet wide and 6 feet deep. They are also treated badly. But why must they dig holes? They are looking for something! Stanley's adventure is unforgetable and is one of the best books I have ever read! I highley recommend this book to anyone who has never read it.

Summary: Holes Review
Review: Stanley Yelnats was a boy who always got picked on in school. One day he was walking home from school and saw a pair of old, smelly shoes. His father had been trying to recycle old shoes so he took them. Little did he know they were Clyde Livingston's. Stanley was sent to Camp Greenlake because they thought he stole the shoes. There, Stanley had to dig a hole everyday. They had to be five feet in every direction. Stanley's friend from camp ran away and after a week so did Stanley. They found each other and headed for the Big Thumb. There they lived on onions and dirty water. They had a sack to fill with onions and water. When they made it back their plan was to dig for something that the warden might want, so they could figure out why the warden made them dig holes everyday. By working together they were able to solve the mystery of the holes.

Holes review

Holes, by Louis Sachar, was an interesting book to read. It made me ask myself questions about what was going to happen next. It kept me reading and on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next exciting moment. The story started a little slow, but soon, it got very exciting. Louis Sachar was very descriptive and I could visually picture the characters every move. I liked the part on page 91, where it says, "She stepped toward him and struck him across the face. Mr. Sir stared at her. He had three long red marks slanting across the left side of his face. Stanley didn't know if the redness was caused by her nail polish or his blood. It took a moment for the venom to sink in. Suddenly, Mr. Sir screamed and clutched his face with both hands. He let himself fall over, rolling off the hearth and onto the rug." The events that took place in the book where ordered very well, I could never guess what would happen next.

The theme of Holes is: Everything happens for a reason, good or bad, and we just have make the best of it. I definitely agree with the theme of this book. Stanley Yelnats didn't really steal Clyde Livingston's shoes from the display case at the charity home, Hector Zeroni (Zero) did. But going to Camp Green Lake enabled Stanley to make new friends, undo the curse, and most of all meet Zero, the kid that the Yelnats family adopts. Many things have definitely gone wrong in my life, but usually, they turn out to be a good thing. I'll accidentally tell a secret and then my friend will get mad at me. But then when I talk to them I tell them how good of a friend they are to me and it turns out that we become better friends. So, many bad things can turn around and become great things.

I definitely think that everyone should read this book. It is a very exciting story that most people would enjoy. This book is not focused on one age group; people of all ages can read this book. It is probably a 6th or 7th grade reading level but the story is for everyone. I read this book, and thought it was so good, I convinced my mom to read it. She thought it was great. Holes also taught me a lesson: Things can go wrong and turn out to be right. Stanley went to a horrible labor camp and met a person who turned out to be a very good friend. I'd say that went from wrong to right. So whenever you get a chance, read Holes, by Louis Sachar.

Summary: One of the best books I ever read!
Review: Holes is a great book.It is full of excitment and suspence! It all started with Stanley's no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather. From then on the yelnats have had the worst luck. As Stanley put it he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Summary: Perfect
Review: Simplistically written, yet extremely complex, by the end of the book, it ties all the strings distributed in the beginning. You are brought into the world just by broad details of the setting and the main character, Stanley Yelnats. It starts with a Camp Green Lake, dirty and barren, and then over a period of time, we learn the origin through flashbacks, and how the camp came to be. This book settles numorous topics: Literacy, generation gaps and changes. I strongly recommend this book.

It was a very imaginative and mysterious and I would recommend it to anyone with a big imagination and loves adventure.

Summary: Holes is a book that must be read
Review: I read "Holes" by Louis Sachar. The main character's name is Stanley Yelnats IV. Stanley is accused of stealing shoes, and is sent to a juvenile detention center, Camp Green Lake. Although the camp sounds great, there is no lake. Camp Green Lake doesn't need any security because it is set up in the middle of a desert. Trying to escape would be suicide. At Camp Green Lake, every day Stanley must dig a hole that is five feet wide and five feet deep to "build character." When Stanley arrives at the camp, he is put in D-Tent where he meets his new camp companions. Everyone in D-Tent has a nickname, Zero, X-Ray, Armpit, Squid, Magnet, and Zigzag. Stanley is nicknamed Caveman. Stanley Yelnats has many adventures at Camp Green Lake, especially with his new best friend, Zero. Zero and Stanley go through many mental and physical obstacles at camp together, and they must work hard to get through them. Especially with the evil warden and Mr. Sir watching closely.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author, Louis Sachar, perfectly describes the story and was able to create the picture in my head. Louis Sachar managed to add in a lot of humor throughout the story. I also liked how Louis Sachar gave me enough description to know the story in detail, but left enough out to allow my imagination to create part of the story. On page 106, Louis Sachar describes water falling to the ground in the perfect amount of detail. "Mr. Sir opened the nozzle, and the water flowed out of the tank, but it did not go into Stanley's canteen. Instead, he held the canteen right next to the stream of water. Stanley watched the water splatter on the dirt, where it was quickly absorbed by the thirsty ground." I also like the personification used in that quote. Louis Sachar puts so much color and picture into his words that it is easy to imagine the whole book, as if I was watching a movie.

The theme of this book isn't very obvious. It could be, "If you want something bad enough and you work hard enough to get there, you will eventually be there at the end." I do agree with this theme. Mostly every life situation falls under this theme. This book relates to me because I am like Stanley. When Stanley arrived at the camp, he had a hard time making new friends. When I moved to Virginia I was the same way.

I would definitely recommend this book to others. It is a Newberry Award Winner. You should read it if you enjoy adventure books. The only problem was that it was kind of childish. I really enjoyed Holes, but after I was finished, I realized that I should have read a higher reading level book. I would not recommend this book for a graded assignment, but if you happen to have some free time, it is definitely the right book to pick up.
