Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Holes Review: Holes is one of my favorite books because it always made me laugh and was always exciting. Some of the things that happen are unbelievable. Stanley Yelnats was your average kid- almost. He gets into trouble with the police but he was innocent. No one believes him so he gets sent to a camp for boys. Everyday each boy has to dig a hole 5 ft. deep and 5 ft. in diameter. The work is extremely hard because of the heat,( the camp is in the middle of the desert) and Mr. Sir, the sort of camp director, is always on their backs. The mysterious Warden who the boys rarely see, and who Stanley has yet to see, must be looking for something. They just don't know what. Stanley and his friend Zero go on a journey for self-dicsovery and a hunt for the truth. Not to mention they have to get away from digging holes. One holes every single day adds up to a lot. Looking into Stanley's ancestor's life every once in a while throughout the book. you get a beter understanding of what's going on. This book has a very suprising end and will keep you on your toes. Louis Sachar has a funny way of telling his stories. They are always exciting and different. I have read a few of his other books, such as, Sideways Stories from Wayside School and There is a Boy in the Girl's bathroom. I couldn't put this book down. I will definitely read more of his books!
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: HOLES Review: In the children's novel, "Holes", Stanely Yelnats is sent to a juvenile dilinquent camp and is treated unfairly until his lawyer, Ms.Morango came to his rescue. His unfair punishment led him to become a stonger person. Throughout the novel, Stanely shows bravery and courage to stand up for what he believes in through time of injustice. He saves his friend Zero from being stranded out in the vast dessert where the camp is located. His strength and encouragment carries the two of them to water and food in order for them to survive. Through their struggles, both Stanely and Zero get a sense of justice at the end. For months, the boys at the camp had been digging for a treasure. After all the treasure was presented to Stanely and Zero. Each boy was given close to one million dollars. As I was reading the novel, I didn't think any kind of justice would actually come to these nearly innocent boys. I felt bad for the way the boys were being treated. No matter how hard things got, Stanely stood strong through his camp experience. Although it seemed as if the novel was leading to an unfair ending, the boys fought until the very end to get what they deserved. The novel showed me, that people should never give up, and even though life may challenge us with some unfair situations, we must make the best of them. This book I would recommend to 5th graders as a way to teach and discuss this life long lesson.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Holes Review: HOLES by Louis Sachar is an exceptional book that easily surpasses the designation of "good book." It is very rich in literary merit and easily enjoyed by audiences of all ages. The setting and characters are effortlessly believable and unique. In the world that we live in today juvenile correctional facilities are commonplace. The vocabulary used in the book is appropriate for the level of the audience and utilizes many figurative language devises. For example, midway through the book the author paints a vivid picture of green lake, "...and it (the lake) sparkled like a giant emerald in the sun." Figurative language greatly influences a books literary merit. Another aspect that contributes to the quality of this book is that it makes the reader care about the outcome. There are so many twist and turns within the novel that it is hard to put down. Holes makes the reader form many questions in his/her head throughout the book. These questions make the reader search through the book for answers and develop feelings for the characters and the events that take place throughout the story. Many other aspects contribute to the books quality but I believe none are as impressive as the novels ability to facilitate suspension of disbelief. Some aspects of the book are hard to believe, such as the curse put on Stanley's family. However, while reading the book the reader doesn't take notice to minor details and is engrossed by the plot and actions that occur while reading. It's ability to do this is far better then a majority of books and keeps the reader actively engaged and enhances its' literary merit significantly. I recommend this book. It can easily relate to a variety of individuals taste and interest an assortment of readers. It captivates the readers' attention by having several stories within the whole. One individual story can captivate interest enough to encourage readers to keep reading. It has a taste of reality with the juvenile detention camp but also has some fantasy, involving gypsies and curses. It touches adventure when dealing with Stanley's escape from Camp Green Lake and evokes interest with talk of "buried treasures." It allows students to uses reasoning skills and draw their own conclusions and promotes creativity and imagination. All these qualities make the book enjoyable and invaluable when it comes to reading. Holes is the type of book that evokes a positive attitude towards reading and that is the most valuable attribute when adressing this books value.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A unique blend of mystery and humor Review: Holes is one of the best books i have ever read. It is an enticing mystery with a unique plot that comes together at the end. Stanley Yelnats is the main character who is under a curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather. Stanley ends up at Camp Green Lake for a crime he did not commit. Here he runs into many unique characters. His friends at Camp Green Lake are all interesting and relatable characters. There is "Zero" who is a nobody, "ZigZag" who changes all the time and finally "magnet" who steals or picks up things from others. Throughout the book Sacher makes the reader believe this Camp Green Lake might actually exist. His details about the Camp are flawless. He makes you believe that the warden can get away with having boys dig holes everyday for their character devolpement. The pacing of this book is also perfect. Sacher weaves in the plot lines with excellent timing. Just when you start to wonder about the plot he throws in another hint towards figuring out the mystery. Finally Sacher's style of writing is unparalleled. His sentences flow together and keep you at the edge of your seat. You never know when Stanley's curse from his no-good-diry-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather is going to affect him. By the end of the book the reader is hooked to see if Stanley will uncover the mystery of Camp Green Lake. I would recommend this book to almost everyone. You can be young or old, male or female, it doesn't matter there is some part of the book you can relate too. If you like a little mystery this is perfect for you. There is also a lot of dark humor in the book. There are two major themes to the book. The first one is how destiny can affect a persons life. If Stanley had not caught the sneakers, he would have never discoverd the mystery at Camp Green Lake and end up where he is at the end of the book. The other theme is the importance of friendship. Stanley starts out as a loner but as the book progresses you see an amazing friendship grow. At the end of the book stanley is a loving person with an amazing friendship that changed his life. There is no reason to not read this book. The literay merit of this book is incredible and irreplaceable characters make it all the better.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A great book for children! Review: From the moment I began reading Holes I was hooked. Stanley Yelnats, the protagonist of this story, is quite a creative individual. I was rooting for Stan from the beginning of the book until the very end. He is a young boy that just does not have much luck with anything and really needs a break. Unfortunately, he never seems to get one. All of this bad luck is believed to have started when a gypsy put a curse on Stan's no-good-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great grandfather for doing something he shouldn't have done. Poor Stan ends up getting sent to Camp Green Lake, a camp for juvenile delinquents, for something that he did not do. At this camp he must dig holes and lots of them as a way of reform. It is here where the story takes off. Stan meets a boy named Hector, AKA Zero, at camp. The pair become friends because they have many similarities. Neither boy seems to fit in anywhere and they take solace in one another. Unbeknownst to Stan, Zero has a connection to his no-good-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great grandfather. The link between the boys is what makes this story so interesting and really holds the readers attention. This is an excellent book that is full of twists and turns from past events that are connected to present events. It really makes you think about what you just read. The colorful details given to describe the characters that Stan meets at Camp Green Lake makes you feel like you really know who they are. Friendship becomes an ongoing theme in the book after Stan and Hector meet, and the two underdogs come out on top at the end. Children of all ages will love this book. With all the irony, suspense, and silliness that takes place, it is even a fun book for an adult to read. This is definitely a comical, feel-good book that keeps you on the edge of your seat and feels like a roller coaster ride. You never know which way the story is going to go so hang on and enjoy the ride!
