Summary: The Strange Strikes Back
Review: Holes
By: Louis Sachar

Per.1

The Newbery award-winning book Holes, written by Louis Sachar, was a very different book. To be honest, I really didn't enjoy reading the book Holes. Holes was about a boy named Stanley Yelnats in a camp called Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake isn't the best camp you could go to, this camp is like a prison for kids. At camp Green Lake, the boys must dig a whole exactly five feet deep and wide each and every day. At the camp, Stanley gets the nickname "Caveman." Caveman discovers out later in the story that the boys are digging to find something valuable, and not for integrity.
This book Holes written by Louis Sachar didn't meet my interest. This book was very strange and different to me; it was like I was reading a Dear Mr. Henshaw type of book. Dear Mr. Henshaw was one of the strangest books I've read in my whole entire life. I also thought that this book's mystery was like the Westing Game's mystery. The Westing Game was a very confusing book to me. ""I get to sleep in, because it's my birthday." Then a little while later he cut into the breakfast line, just in front of Squid." The boys in this book have a mind of their own.
I usually like strange and different books, but this one just went overboard. The book Holes is like three stories in one. The first story talks about Stanley Yelnats, the second story talks about Miss Katherine Barlow, and the third story talks about a heredity mystery. One example could be, "Even if there was, Katherine and Sam wouldn't have noticed. They were lost in their own world." This could be an example of the second story in this book.
This book was ok, but my least favorite part of the book was when some agents were seeing how smart a boy named Zero was. Zero's real name was Harold, but people called him Zero because he was very excellent at math. The only experience in reading Zero had, was a lesson by Stanley Yelnats. The agents spelled out words for Zero, so Zero could say them out loud. Zero got the first two words cat and fat, but he couldn't get the third word hat. All of the agents made fun of Zero, so Zero ran away. I didn't like this part because all the agents were making fun of him even though Zero only had one lesson from Stanley Yelnats. The book Holes, written by Louis Sachar, was the strangest book I've ever read.

Summary: Holes is great!
Review: Holes is the engaging story of Stanley Yelnats, accused of stealing the stinky sneakers of a famous baseball player that were supposed to be auctioned for charity. He is innocent, but, like everyone in his family since his "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather," he was in the wrong place at the wrong time (7). He is sent to Camp Green Lake where there is nothing green and no lake. He and the other boys spend each day digging individual five by five holes in the now-dry lake bed. They rise early to avoid the hottest part of the Texas day, but cannot return to their tents until their whole is complete. They also have to avoid the yellow-spotted lizard-one bite is deadly. Stanley is heavy and out of shape, and digging holes is very hard work for him. Stanley makes a deal with a camper, Zero, to teach him to read for one hour a night in return for one hour's worth of digging. Zero runs away, and Stanley chases after his new friend. Juxtaposed with the primary tale of Stanley and Zero is the story of Stanley's great-great-grandfather, a famous lady-gunslinger named Kate Barlow, and Kate's love, a black man named Sam who is killed for kissing a white woman. The tale of Kate and Stanley's grandfather eventually resolves the mystery of Camp Green Lake and what the "campers" are searching for all day in the hot sun.

This story is built around the absurdity of Stanley's crime and punishment. However, beyond the absurd circumstances of his incarceration, Sachar manages to build a community and explore the importance of friendships-especially among those who don't necessarily fit in. Even though he was the biggest boy in his class, Stanley was bullied and tormented. Sachar writes, "The teachers never took Stanley's complaint seriously, because Derrick was so much smaller than Stanley. Some teachers even seemed to find it amusing that a little kid like Derrick could pick on someone as big as Stanley" (23). Stanley is obviously sensitive and non-confrontational to allow Derrick to bully him, but on his first day at Camp Green Lake, he becomes "Caveman." His new bunkmates warn a larger boy, "You don't want to mess with the Caveman" (44). By sticking together and giving each other nick-names, the boys create a community in a very inhospitable place. They help each other with advice about digging holes and avoiding the counselors. Stanley and Zero help each other both at camp, and in the desert.

Characterization is very important in this novel. Sachar makes it clear from the beginning that Stanley, a nice boy, is not used to taking responsibility for his actions. Everything in his, and his father's, and his father's father's, life has been blamed on his great-great-grandfather, who was cursed by a Gypsy. Sachar writes, "Stanley and his parents didn't believe in curses, of course, but whenever anything went wrong, it felt good to blame someone" (8). Stanley is a character who is acted upon, rather than one who takes action. He allows Derrick to bully him. He allows X-Ray to take credit for finding something in the dry river bed, losing a half-day of freedom. When he finally takes some action by running away to try and find Zero, things start to go better for Stanley. He still has doubts about his ability to make things happen, but Zero tells him, "When you spend your whole life living in a hole, the only way you can go is up" (159). Stanley takes this sentiment to heart, and manages to dig his way out of the hole that is his life.

Learning to take responsibility for one's actions is the key experience in this novel. Students will relate to Stanley's growth from someone who is ready to blame his long dead great-great-grandfather for everything that goes wrong in his life to someone who takes an active part in what is going on, willing to accept the consequences.

Summary: Holes is a great read
Review: I really enjoyed reading Holes. As an adult reading a child's book, I really expected a lot and Sachar delivered. Stanley Yelnats was a loveable and funny character who was involved in some unbelievable and exciting situations. The mystery involved in the plot of the book really left me satisfied in the end. I enjoyed this book from start to finish and would recommend it to children and adults. (I gave a copy to my mom too, and she loved it.)

Summary: Summer Camp--Sounds Like Fun, Right?
Review: Summer camp, for most children, is what they look forward to. Not according to Stanley Yelnats. Stanley is a typical teenage boy that got accused of stealing a famous athletes shoes. His punishment--summer camp at Camp Green Lake. This wasn't the typical summer camp. This camp involoved digging holes in the middle of the desert--for what reason?? Punishment?? Not really...Stanley and some of his buddies find out the REAL truth about Camp Green Lake.

This book not only tells the story of Stanley's camp experience, but it goes back in time--the way things used to be and how Camp Green Lake was created!!

I would reccommend this book for children ages 11-18 (or older). I'm twenty-nine years old and I LOVED it!! It is very humorous, serious, and gives the reader a sense of living in the "olden days."

Summary: "Diggin'"Up A Good Book
Review: Stanley Yelnats--a typical teenager that just went a little too far and got sent to Camp Green Lake. While at this "camp" all of the boys have to dig holes every day in the middle of the desert as their punishment--or so they think. Stanley, along with his families past, are two factors in finding out the REAL truth about Camp Green Lake, the warden, etc....
This is a great book for children in the age range of 11-18. I am a seventh grade teacher and I absolutely loved this book. I got to experience meeting and hearing Louis Sachar--a great experience!!!

Holes is a very good book by Louis Sacher. It is about a boy named Stanly Yelnats who is convicted of a crime that he did not commit.(He stole a pair of shoes.Clyde Livingston's shoes to be exact.)So he has two choices: he can either go to jail, or he can attend Camp Green Lake.If just by haring the name, you think that Cap Green Lake actually has a lake, then you're wrong. Camp Green Lake is a boys' detention center in the middle of nowhere. There, the boys'must dig holes. One hole per day, and the hole must be exactly 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep. What the boy' do not know is that the 'Warden' is looking for a treasure there because a long time ago, there actually was a lake there. Consequently, she has the boys to dig holes for her. Some of Stanley's friends have weird nicknames. For example:Armpit, Zigzag, Squid,X-Ray,Magnet,and Zero.Their real names are:Theodore,Ricky,Alan,Rex,Jose, and Hector. The weird thing about Hector is that his last name is Zeroni, the very man that Stanley's great-grandfather was looking for when he got to the United States.
My favorite part of the book is the end when Stanley, now dubbed 'Caveman', and Zero excape from the camp and they accidentally find the treasure that the Warden was looking for. When the Warden finds Zero and Caveman, there are a bunch of yellow-spotted lizards, which are very poisonous. The treasure that they found belonged to Stanley's great- grandfather who was robbed by the outlaw Katherine Barlow, otherwise known as Kissin' Kate Barlow. She is called Kissin' Kate Barlow because she first shoots the person, then she kisses them.In the end, both Stanley adn Zero get to leave Camp Green Lake. They also get to meet Clyde Livingston, the man who Stanley, supposedly stole the shoes from.(Zero was the one who really stole the shoes.)This is a really, really good book. Those of you who haven't read it,I advise you to go get a copy.

Summary: Holes
Review:

Holes is a book by the popular author of “Dogs don’t tell Joes”, “There is a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom”, and the Marvin Red post series, Louis Sanchar.

The book talks about a boy called Satnley Yelnats that is sent to a camp (Camp Green Lake). He is accused of stealing a pair of shoes. In the camp the boys are forced to dig holes. Stanley realizes that there is another reason for digging holes than the “character building experience”; he thinks that the warden is looking for something else,

This is a facinanting history that I recommend you read it. The narrative of the author is so good, that you can almost see the events and the landscape in which the history is develop. If you like to follow the clues and solve mysteries while reading a great adventure, this book is for you.

Summary: Holes
Review: Have you ever thought that want to change into a gracious person? If you have, I recommend a place for just like you.
There was the largest beautiful lake in Texas. However, now, there is no lake, just dry and flat wasteland. This place is called Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake works as a jail. Stanley Yelnats is suspected that he stole a premium sneaker, but he is innocent. Actually, the Yelnats's have a curse because of his " no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grand father." Therefore, Stanley always gives up because of a curse. When he gets troubles or difficulties, he thinks just "I am in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Moreover, Stanley has to go the Camp Green Lake. Then Stanley makes friends, Zero, Zigzag, X-ray, Squid, Magnet, Armpit. They were forced to dig five feet holes every single day by their boss. Her name is the Warden. The purpose of Camp Green Lake is to change their personality from a naughty boy to a well-mannered boy. However, maybe there is another purpose too. When they find something, they have to tell the Warden. Stanley finds a strange tube, and then the Warden is anxious. So, they were suspicious about her, why are they digging holes?
Holes was written by Louis Sachar in 1998. This story is very superior. The friendship and fate of Yelnats and Zero are described splendidly. Also, the destiny of Yelnats is in this story. The story is almost puzzles. There are some interesting stories about Stanley's great grandfather, and Stanley. So, there are different time orders in this book. When you read the book first, you will be just a little bit confused. However, while you read the book, you can match everything that is confusing.
When I was reading "Holes," I was fascinated and learned how important friendship is. Also, the reader can enjoy characters emotions. They sometimes fight and make great relationships; even we can watch the treachery or the human being's unsightly feeling. Each incident is described very clearly. I promise you will like this book.
Let's go to the Camp Green Lake and make real friends and learn about difficult living as a human being.

Summary: A really great read!
Review: Holes is a exellent book for people who like a little mystery and a little adventure. Back to the point, Holes is a book about a boy named Stanley Yelnats. His family is very poor(his name is spelled the same front and back). He is acused of stealing shoes and given a choice between jail and a place called Camp Green Lake. Of course he picks Green Lake. At Camp Green Lake, Stanley makes friends he never had. All the kids have wierd nicknames like Caveman, Armpit, Zig Zag, Zero and some more.

During his stay at Camp Green Lake, Stanley finds something that belonged to an outlaw, the same outlaw that robbed his family a hundred years ago. This makes his family very rich and the family of his new found best friend, also.

The book has a great and unexpected ending. It has recently been made into a movie and I can't wait to see it.
