He was walking along one day when all of a sudden, a pair of shoes fell from the sky. Stanley had to go to court because someone found him with the shoes. Even though Stanley told them the truth about the shoes, no one believed him. The shoes belonged to some famous person. Stanley didn't know this and he was found guilty. For his punishment, the judge told him that he would have to go to Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake is a place where children go if they have done something bad. When Stanley got to the camp, he asked, "Where's the lake?" Everyone laughed. There was no lake at Camp Green Lake. Was there one before? Everyday the kids have to dig a hole that is exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. Why? Is the warden looking for something? Will Stanley ever get out of Camp Green Lake? Why is there no lake? You'll have to read the book to find out. I recommend Holes to any one that likes a darkly humorous book of crime. There are some funny parts in the book, and it has many different kinds of characters. I loved this book. Even though it's fiction, I think that it teaches to keep on trying. I think this book teaches you that lesson because Stanley kept on trying to figure out what was going on and he kept on trying to escape. I also think this book tells you to stand up for yourself. I think this because Stanley told the truth and even though he had to go to Camp Green Lake he still kept on saying that he was innocent. Why? I think that he did this because he was brave. He was brave because he wasn't scared of being punished even more when they didn't believe him. This is my favorite book and I hope it will be yours too.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: 5 holes Review: ..."My no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather." That's who Stanley blames whenever things go wrong in his life, like being accused of a crime he didn't commit and having to go to Camp Green Lake as a punishment. At Camp Green Lake you have to dig holes that are five feet deep and five feet wide in any direction. He thinks it is to build character, but later he finds out otherwise. The book has flashbacks to about one hundred years before Stanley's story takes place. Those flashbacks tell the reader why they are digging for treasure. In the book, one of his friends, Zero, runs away into the desert without much water. Stanley runs away about four days later to find him. They don't know if they will survive because they have run out of water. They start to climb a mountain. They call the mountain "big thumb" because the top looks like a giant thumb. When they get to about the halfway point, Zero starts throwing up. Stanley has to carry Zero the rest of the way up the mountain. When he get to the top, he digs a bit with his hands, because he thinks that there might be a small stream a little bit down. He finds one. The next day he digs a little with his shovel, and it gets bigger. They live on that water and onions for a week. Holes is a good fiction book for people who like books that have a lot of problems, books that go back and forth between the past and the present, and adventure stories I thought that it was a very interesting book and I didn't want to put it down until I finished it.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Love this book Review: It's a really good book. It has stuff from the past and the present that at first, you wonder what on earth does it have to do with the book, but Mr Sachar makes it tie all together in the end. It's extremely complex; I can't explain he story. You have to read it! Holes has strong opinions about racism and bullying in the story, making it touching and funny (come on, this is Louis Sachar!!). I love this book. And as I said, I can't explain why, you just get it if you read it...
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Excellent Storytelling! Review: I am a huge fan of this book. I just finished reading it for the 3rd time. As a second grade teacher I was very familiar with Louis Sachar from his Wayside School Stories and Marvin Redpost series also. In fact his Wayside School stories are amongst my classes favorite read alouds each year. Sachar has a real knack for giving me brief chuckles and also huge belly laughs. In this story we meet Stanley Yelnats a very unfortunate young man. Who through a strange twist of fate ends up at a youth correctional facility digging 5 foot deep, 5 foot wide holes everyday for what would be 18 months. At this camp Stanley meets up with a great cast of characters who take him in and help transform him into a new person. This book is masterfully written! I can't help but think of the movie Cool Hand Luke... as I read it. It takes an amazing children's author to bring a prison story to light like this and make it accessible to children. Sachar tells this story like he's "unpeeling the layers of an onion." (See the book) The connections are surprising and carefully revealed. He tells us just what we need to know-- just when we need to know it. I love it more each time I read it... and I bet you will too!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Fun, Fast, Entertaining Read! Review: Stanely Yelnats IV has had a run of bad luck lately. Well, actually, his whole life has been a run of bad luck, but recently his luck has been really bad. I mean, how many people get hit with some sneakers falling out of the sky and are convicted of stealing them? How was Stanley supposed to know that the sneakers belonged to a famous baseball player? Of course, no one believes him and he has the choice of going to jail or to Camp Green Lake. Stanley has always wanted to go away to camp like other kids do, so he leaps at the chance to go to Camp Green Lake. But when Stanley arrives, he discovers that there is no lake at Camp Green Lake - there are just a bunch of holes. It doesn't take Stanley long to figure out that there is more to Camp Green Lake than meets the eye. At first it is all Stanley can do to dig his 5 x 5 foot hole everyday and deal with the bad-tempered, sunflower-seed-spitting Mr. Sir, the seemingly kind-hearted Mr. "Mom" Pendanski, the rattlesnake-venom fingernail polish of the Warden, the bizarre heirarchy of the boys led by X-Ray, and a host of other characters including Zero, whom everyone believes is nothing. As Stanley spends time at Camp Green Lake, he learns more and more about himself and discovers that the camp really was successful in building his character... I loved this book. It was a fast, fun read with quirky characters and four different stories tied together into one. The main story is the one of Stanley Yelnats IV and his experiences at camp, but we also follow the story of Stanley Yelnats I who was robbed in the middle of the desert and survived by using "God's thumb", there is Stanley's "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather" who got him into this mess in the first place, and the sad story of Kissin' Kate Barlow, the notorious outlaw who robbed Stanley Yelnats I. These stories are creatively woven together and Sachar adds lots of humor, sometimes dark humor, but the stories are quite funny all the same. Readers will love Sachar's characters and will be fascinated with the setting. If you are looking for something out of the norm to read that is well written and just plain fun, look no further!

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Couldn't put it down! Review: This compeling and uniquely written book is such a treasure! I started reading Holes and couldn't put it down. With the chapters being so short, it feels like a real quick read. This book is usually read in upper elementary or middle school, but as an adult I was absolutely impressed and interested. It was a unique blend of suspense, mystery, historical fiction, comedy, and drama. I would recommend this book to just about anyone. I gave it four out of five stars only because I would have liked it to be longer! I was left with many questions at the end and the longing to know more.
