The encounter between the Warden and Mr. Sir was a little too intense, making me anxious. Overall it is a great read.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Holes Review: In my opinion Holes was a good book. I wanted to watch the movie but I am glad I got to read the book. The book was good because it used very descriptive words and it allowed you to visualize the places they were at. There were places that I could see what Stanley could see. I would recommend this book anyone who would consider reading it because I really enjoyed this piece of reading material. The person who wrote this book had a good idea of what would keep his readers interested in the story. I couldn't wait until we reached the end of the book so I could find out what was going to happen. At the end of the story I didn't expect that Stanley was going to....... Don't tell me you thought I was going to tell you what really happened, did you??

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Great for the first 90 percent Review: This book has a great story, great characters, and tons of thematic material for discussion. It is very well written. I felt very cheated by the ending, however. The author takes tremendous liberties to tie things up, and I just didn't buy it. My students all loved the ending, though, so don't expect children to be as disappointed at the end as I was. Just don't expect any realism in the last few chapters.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Good but not Great! Review: STORY: Stanley Yelants IV is wrongly accused of a petty crime and sent to Camp Green Lake juvenial facility to work out his term. At this camp, that is neither green nor has a lake, he finds friendship, self-confidence, and dreams. MY FEEDBACK 1) SETTING - unique setting the allowed for easy conflict and a great backdrop for characters to build relationships with each other. Very nicely done. 2) CHARACTERS - I felt a little let down here. After reading all the other reviews my expectations were really high. And once I read the book I only felt a liking for Stanley and Zero but not really the other cast of characters. The biggest reason why I liked Stanley and Zero is for the friendship elements that reminded me of the movie Stand By Me. BUT Stanley as the main protagonist doesn't seem to go through a very large amount of change as a person...thus I'm confused why people think it is more than a good read and should be treated like a great read. 3) STORY - There are actually two story lines that in the last few pages of the book merge together into present time. One story line has to do with how the area of Camp Green Lake came to be and the history and mystery of the characters and events around that. The second story line is as mentioned...the story of Stanley in his juvenial prison. It was nice that things came together and linked together towards the end but I didn't feel it had the same emotional rush as when I read The Giver by Lois Lowry. OVERALL - A good read but not so great that I have to rush out and see the movie. Very easy read, because I finished this in like two or three hours. The book is good enough that you won't waste your time if you pick this one up.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Outstanding Instructional Tool Review: I taught this book to inner-city seventh graders last year and I couldn't believe the response. My students couldn't wait to rush in my classroom and pick up a book. These are the same kids who we have to pull teeth to get to read anything! Ironically, even reading it as an adult the book made me think.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Well written & Well performed Review: Listening to this audiobook as a writer in training and just a person wanting to be entertained I was blown away. The descriptions are as sparce as the desert of Camp Green Lake, but there is no description that doesn't count. Every detail worth remembering is brought to life with just enough description to give you an intriguing picture and let your imagination fill in the rest. It's a beautiful tale that's easier to get through than a Harry Potter book, but just as rewarding.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Entertaining Book - For Kids or Adults Review: The protagonist of "Holes" is Stanley Yelnats IV, an overweight kid who doesn't fit in very well at his school. He gets in trouble and is sent to a mysterious camp for delinquents. He soon meets the other inmates, a strange group of boys who call each other by even stranger nicknames, and they soon dub Stanley as "Caveman." As part of their punishment, the boys have to dig large holes in the desert. The Warden and other adults say that digging the holes will help build their character, but it soon becomes apparent that there are more nefarious reasons for the holes. "Holes" is a great combination of mystery and humor, which is dark and off-beat. Louis Sachar very skillfully pulls together all the bits and pieces for a great resolution. The book also has good messages about finding a place to fit in and being yourself. A terrific read for youngsters or adults, especially if you enjoy the Harry Potter or Series of Unfortunate Events books. I haven't seen the movie but am looking forward to checking it out on DVD. Highly recommended!!
