Rating: Summary: A good book, but the Newbery? Review: The plot is clever and the characters are likeable, but this book does not have the depth of Out of the Dust, or The Giver. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to just about any reader. However, I think the Newbery committee missed the mark.
Rating: Summary: Sachar Rises to a new level Review: As a retired media specialist I've always enjoyed reading Sachar to my students. I was pleasantly surprised to see he won the Newbery. I've always thought the Newbery committee to be slanted towards heavier books. This is not the typical Sachar, but he has reached a more complex level without losing the appeal to many student readers. There's much to think about here. To me it ranks with some of the best Newbery Selections. Somewhere with Maniac Magee and The Giver.
Rating: Summary: cool book Review: HyPrBoY911@aol.com from u.s.a. , February 12, 1999 Louis sachar- Another Hit! This is the most outrageous bok, that makes you feel like you are really there! It is like you cant stop reading! This deserved the Newberry Honor so much, because I really don't read that much, but as I read this, i read 100 pages every day. It improved my reading skills, so now i can read a lot, every single night. Everyone has to read this book, it teaches you a great lesson!
Rating: Summary: Deft Review: "Holes" really is a good book, especially for older boys. It has moments of odd humor and deft use of flashback and parallel stories. My one problem with it is the changing character of Mr. Pendanski the counselor, who starts out nice and suddenly becomes evil. But this is a very enjoyable read.
Rating: Summary: A story of redemption Review: This book marks the first time my oldest daughter (9) recommended a book to me. I loved it. It's magical realism for kids. A story of the consequences of a careless act and an evil act long ago. The careless act marks a family for generations, and the evil act destroys a town. Stanley Yelnats finds the courage and the heart to redeem them both. Another aspect of the book that deserves mention is the plotting, which is as clever and effective as anything this side of Pulp Fiction.
Rating: Summary: You'll never want to dig another hole again Review: Stanley Yelnats. The same backwards and forwards. Stanley is the main character who gets wrongly convicted of stealing a famous baseball player's shoes. He is sent to a juvenile detention center, Camp Green Lake. What will happen to him there? Does digging holes at 4:30 in the morning really just build character, or is there something else behind it all. Read and find out.
Rating: Summary: WOW--what a book! Review: I bought this book for my 13 year old daughter because I saw it won the Newberry. Thought I would scan it before I gave it to her--I read straight for ten hours--could not put it down. Thought I was reading Cormier. It is intense, whacky, and an all around good read...

Rating: Summary: You'll never want it to end! Review: Holes is the first work by Louis Sachar that I've read, and I was very impressed! It had rather offbeat characters in a captivating plot. I liked the easy-to-read style and the setup of the chapters. I would recommend this book to everyone I know.
Rating: Summary: It gives you the feeling that you are really there!!!!!! Review: I thought that this book was supurb. I never wanted it to end
