Summary: Defies the Medium, A New Classic
Review: A book usually has a demographic. This book has one as well, everyone. I would be hard-pressed to find an avid reader that would not enjoy this read. You could pick a part the writing and the detail, but by doing that you are admitting that you did not fully understand what the book meant. It is a non-demographic book only rivaled by The Hobbit. If you like a story that includes a little bit of everything, and a lot of heart, check out Holes.

Summary: Funny and clever
Review: This is a great book for preteens. It's clever, with many plot twists and turns that tie up at the end. The characters are very true to life and kids can identify with them. It's so metimes sad, often funny, and hard to put down.

I'm 23, I love kids lit, and this is a book I'd recommend to my friends as well as my 10-year old brother. This book pulls no punches, yet is an enjoyable read with some good lessons about honesty and friendship. Totally deserving of the Newbery.

I hope Sachar writes more like this in addition to his funny Marvin Redpost series.

Summary: "Onions! Hot Sweet Onions!"
Review: I didn't expect such thrilling and fascinationg story from the author whose name had never been heard. Now I know his name, and I made up my mind to read as many his books as possible. His story-telling is hard to resist. It's like "an onion." It has some odor; sweat, dirt, and poverty. It has many layers of lives of characters which still wait for you to read aloud. It has some power or vigor to tell us no coincidence happens in our lives, i.e. no lives has no meaning!

Summary: Proceed with caution
Review: While I find most of this book to be a delightful tale of disgrace and then redemption, I am more than a little concerned with the depiction of some of the characters, and the oversimplification of the very sensitive subject of racism in this book. The scenes that dealt most directly with race appeared from out of nowhere, and left me as a reader feeling confused and browbeaten by the author himself. Why were they there? why at that time? how was it to help me understand the characters anymore? These and many other questions leave me feeling discomforted. The author presents the stereotypes and the issues/problems, but does not seek in any way to point to any sort of resolution in the mind of the reader. While an adult may have no problems with this task, I doubt that a child would be able to do this on their own. I would suggest reading this text before handing it off to a child as a gift, and maybe even reading it with them to help them through the difficult parts of the text that the author lays before us, but then chooses not to really deal with.

Summary: Holes
Review: This Book, being the first one that i have read on this crude Planet Erth ~our name for this planet meaning Crude and simple~ was actually quite interesting. It was kind of strange seeing that a young boy should be punished so simply. On our planet Anvagon, noone takes thefts simply. Besides. I feel that the way the boy ~i cannot remember your earthling names~ was very brave. He adjusted to his surroundings very quickly. Unlike me in your earthling community. These computers how do you manage?

Anyone who does not like to read (like myself) might find this book differant then other books you might have read. I also recommend this book for any age. If you might be 7 or you might be 70, I recommend this book to you. You will truly be missing out if you do not read Holes. Thank you.

Summary: A FANTASTIC BOOK THAT KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT!
Review: I have read this book several times and I loved it more and more everytime I read it. I have recomended this book to family members and friends. If you enjoy curling up to a good book then I recomend this book to you. " Holes" has everything you could possibly want in a book: love, hate, adventure, deception, everything! One thing I liked about "Holes" is how it weaves two stories together( Katherine Kate Barlow and Stanley Yelnats) and makes them fit together in the end. I have read a lot of Louis Sacher books, but this time he has out done himself!

Summary: The BEST book ever!
Review: Ok so you people who haven't read this yet might think: oh its only about holes! What a stupid title! Yes, in some aspects of the book there are many reasons the title is "Holes". Stanley Yelnats' (a palindromic name) family has a curse all due to his "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather" and because of this curse, he is accused of a crime worth $5,000! His only two options were Camp Green Lake and Jail...his parents thought it would be better to send him to Camp Green Lake...there is no lake...no green at all...and this is NOT a Girl Scout Camp. Stanley and his friend who has no idenity, and no parents or guardians, unravel the curse in a coincedental way, and find the riches of Camp Green Lake. I would say this book is a puzzle you must figure out...most aspects of this book are going to make you go "oh my gosh" or "ohhhh now i get it" but there are some things in this book that, even if you read 100 times, you may never understand it.

Summary: The Best Plotted Story I've Ever Read!
Review: Stanley Yelants digs himself into a few holes by accidently being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He ends up at some kind of boot camp and is digging holes till he gets let out. With a plot that keeps you hooked and whining for more when it's time to turn out the light, Holes takes you through a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. The end will surprise you in many ways! I recommend this book to an adult, also, because he or she will be wondering why they didn't make these kind of books for people there age! I also recommend this book who loves a good book that makes you think.
