We both enjoyed it very much.Holes is the story of Stanley Yelnats, a young boy sent to a work camp for stealing shoes from a homeless shelter. This camp has no fences, as it is the only known place with water within several miles. Every day, Stanley and the rest of the camp has to dig holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. Stanley matures quite a bit while at the camp, and he develops friendships with several of the other boys. The comradery built is remarkable and the overall story makes for really entertaining reading. Throughout the book, there are several flashbacks to Camp Green Lake 110 years ago. The reader gets a glimpse at Stanley's heritage, as well as the story behind the curse of his "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-grandfather." Overall, it is an excellent book. Louis Sachar does a superb job of "filling in the holes," and ties everything up together. Each flashback has a distinct purpose, making for a very cogent storyline. The plot twists are plentiful, which allows the book to leave a nice lasting impression. Holes is a must read for families with young children.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Hole lot of great writing Review: You must have the basic plot by now from the write-ups and the other reviews. I just wanted to add my two cents in praise of this wonderfully crafted piece of literature. While simply written ("understated" is a huge overstatement) there is a requirement to read carefully. Each and every bit of story is carefully crafted and lovingly placed in just the right spot. There is not a word or a sentence that does not add to the book. Miss a paragraph and you miss a lot. Miss this novel and there will be a hole in your collection of great books.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Holes Review: I read Holes as a Read-Aloud with my 4th grade students last year. My students were extremely into the book and always complained when we would stop reading. It is suspensful and full of surprises, all of which will keep a young reader interested in the climax and solution. Awsome for all ages and makes a wonderful gift!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Great Book Review: After checking this book out from my school library I read the first 50 pages finding myself bored. I immediatley gave up on the book having no idea of what I was missing. I just checked it out again from my local library and I must say this book was phenomonal. The book stars Stanley Yelnats, a kid that is accused of stealing sneakers and is sent to Camp Green Lake. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. Each camper has to dig a hole everyday 5 feet by 5 feet because Mr. Sir says it builds character. Through many plots, twists, and flashbacks of Green Lake a hundred and ten years ago, this book is an amazing piece of literature. Read this book as soon as you can. You'll thoroughly enjoy it.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Great Book Review: Last school year I checked this book out from my school library and after the first fifty pages I decided the book was stupid and I gave up on it. Well now about 6 months later I checked the book out from my local library and it was fantastic. I couldn't help myself from reading into the night. The story follows Stanley as he is accused if stealing sneakers and is sent to Camp Green Lake. It's not a camp. There is no lake. Each "camper" has to dig a hole everyday becasue it builds character according to Mr. Sir and the Warden. With flasbacks from 110 years back this book has great leads toward the plot. This book does not want to be missed by any fan of Louis Sachar! Read it now!
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Classy, inventive, youth fiction. Good stuff! Review: Louis Sachar has obviously studied at the feet of writers like Roald Dahl and the German Grimm brothers, and has obviously learned his lessons well. With the narrative bouncing around between multiple time periods, Sachar manages to unfold a tale that's alternatingly funny, dark, sweet, and dangerous. This is the kind of book to read with your kids--so they don't miss anything, and so they can work through some of the scarier portions. I appreciate a story that deals so eloquently with the arid hearts of the racially prejudiced without soapboxing. Stanley is a fine everyboy whose courage ends up suiting him well. Perhaps my only (slim) complaint is the jumps in tone. Some portions play off as goofy that the transition back into the hard, hot land of Camp Green Lake is shocking. Or perhaps that's the point--you can't always remain in the fairy tale, even in a fairy tale. Highly recommended.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: One of the greatest books I've read Review: The book Holes teaches you to NEVER read a book by its cover. I first heard of it and I thought 'oh great HOLES how exciting! That's just what I've always wanted to read! NOT!' I sat down and opened it up. It was REALLY INTERESTING! I enloyed almost as much as the Giver!(Almost!;) The way Louis Sachar tied the plots all together! It was wonderful! I would recommend this book to anyone who has time to sit down and enloy one the greatest books written!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Quite a Gift Review: My sister gave me this book as a birthday gift. I'm 33, she's 30. I wondered if it was a commentary on her opinion of my mental age. If it was, it was a compliment. This is a brilliant book--fun, suspensful, touching, odd.... What seems like multiple unrelated stories weaves together in unexpected ways. And the writing style is appropriately easy-going and ironic. I recommend this book not only to kids, but also to siblings aged 30 and up.
