Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Happy, Sad & Curious Review: Poor Stanley. It seems that if it weren't for bad luck, the entire Yelnats family (including young Stanley) wouldn't have any luck at all. Our entire family enjoyed this mystery (dad even read it one night & the little ones had it read aloud to them). Frustrating sometimes. A little "too" mysterious (until the end) sometimes. But it all managed to come together and had everyone cheering by its conclusion. A great read for one of those lazy days (or even for one of those long nights with a flashlight under the bedsheets!). You'll enjoy it! We sure did!
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: A Hard, realistic tale with a magical twist Review: Young Stanley, a boy caught at the wrong place at the wrong time. Just blame it on his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather. Stanley was caught in an act in which he didn't commit, which brings him to a 'camp' called Camp Green Lake. Don't let the name confuse you, its anything but green. Explore Stanley's journey of repenance from generations past, and a new friend that will eventually help Stanley's poor family in the end. A great book, that every adolescent should have the chance to read. Louis Sachar uses her unique style to yet write another awards winning book.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: Good book for young readers Review: I am a 15 year old girl, and we read Holes in my English class. I thought the book was pretty good. It really let your mind go nuts, because of how you would be reading about one person in one paragraph and then the next paragraph would be about someone else. I also feel that the leaders at camp Green Lake were to harsh on the kids by making them dig all those holes and sometimes not feeding them. It was just plain nasty. I would recommend this book to really only kids up to 6th grade.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A triumphant story for children... and adults Review: Holes will certainly appeal to Harry Potter fans. It is the type of story where the main character ends up on a quest for self respect, and as a side effect of what he has become, he is many times over the hero. So to be brief, this story is cool and kids will like it. For a little more detail: The story is very simply spoken, but very well written. Frequent flashbacks (100 years back) provide clues to the fate of our hero Stanley Yelnats. Rarely will the author just come right out and explain why a brief sidetracked story has anything to do with the plot, but each one is a key to a new riddle. And even the riddles are often subtle. Some riddles are easy (Why does Zero keep muttering about Satan?) some are moderate (Why was there 'sploosh' in the middle of the desert?) some are a bit tough (Where is Zero's father?). I believe this method of foreshadowing and interpretation on the reader's part could be useful in getting a child to reread this book and developing cognitive abilities. To put it simply again: This book will make you feel happy!
