Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Bizarre and complex plot--loved it! Review: "Holes" is one of those books that either you love or you hate; I loved it. The premise is so surreal that you can almost believe it--that Stanley, who had a horrible run of bad luck, should be sent to the strangest detention center ever, banished to dig holes every day. The plot pulls the reader along, leading you through the bizarre landscape and turns of events, along with a parallel plot that takes place many years earlier in the same place. It is some time before you begin to discern how these plots will dovetail, but dovetail they do, and it impels you to read on and see how it all works out for Stanley. The plot is almost like a modern morality play, and the characters are so well drawn, that you become engaged with them all, the good and the bad. If you are a reader who loves what my colleagues and I refer to as "weird" books, this will be a great read. I have used it successfully as a read aloud with 6th graders, and they loved it, too.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Holes Book Review Review: Holes is a very good book about a boy named Stanley Yelnats. Stanley was accused of a crime and had to go to court. The judge said Stanley could either go to jail or go to Camp Green Lake. Stanley picked to go to Camp Green Lake not knowing what he was in for. When he got there, he found that there was nothing green except for two trees. There wasn't even a lake. Everyday Stanley and the other boys had to dig a hole five feet across in every direction. Stanley had a lot of trouble the first couple of days, but he got the hang of it. Stanley helped a boy named Zero learn to write and read. They ended up friends. But when Zero ran away, what would Stanley do? To find that and other secrets out, you'll have to read the book. I recommend this book to people who like adventure stories, survival stories, and part mystery stories.
