It is also about friendship. And some kids have funny names like Zero, and X-ray. All of the kids have to dig a hole 5x5 meters deep every day. When they dig they have to watch out for the yellow spotted lizards that can poison them. The kids also want to stay away from the warden because of her long fingernails that she uses to scrape and cut the kids. Some kids grow up at Camp Green Lake so they aren¡¦t as smart as Stanley. So he teaches these two kids Zero & x-ray how to spell and their ABC¡¦s. I like this book because it¡¦s about friendship and bravery.

It is for readers who like excitement, mystery, and history. Stanley Yelnats, aka Caveman, is the main character in this book. He is accused for something he didn't do. He gets sent to Camp Green Lake, a dried out lake where bad boys went to dig holes 5 feet deep and 5 feet wide every single day for, well, a really long time. One day Hector Zeronie(Zero), Stanley's best friend, ran away out into the hot and dry desert. Will Stanley go after his friend or leave him standed in the desert with no water or shade? If you read the book you can see what happens to Zero.

Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: Dissapointing. Review: I really like Louis Sachar's books, but this is a mistake.... I read this in 2 days. Boring, actually. The book is about a kid who goes to juvenile hall because he stole some athlete's sneakers. The flashbacks in the book are really boring. The most intresting charecter, the warden, was hardly focused on. Please, don't waste your time.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: An Amazing Book! Review: This book was the most exciting and well written book I have ever read. A boy named Stanley goes to Camp Green Lake as punishment for a crime that he did not commit. Camp Green Lake is actually a dried up lake in which the campers must dig large holes in the hard dirt every day. He finds many strange things during his time at Camp Green Lake and finally starts to piece together the truth behind this strange place and how it relates to his own family history. Everything makes sense in the end, and if you read it long enough you will understand the clever way the author has created this wonderful story.

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Holes Review: I enjoyed this book immensely. This book has a dual plot of interwoven stories occurring in the present and 110 years ago in the same location. The parallels between the plot of long ago and the events of today are extraordinary. In the past, a young man sold onions, which become very important to the plot later on. The onion is a symbol for the book itself and for its central characters. The book begins very bitter as people are very mean to Stanley, but as we get deeper we see a soft side to some of the characters and find a very sweet relationship between the two central characters. The friendship formed between these two based upon sharing is a message for the way kids should get along. Just like the onion, as we peel each stinging layer off we find ourselves getting closer and closer to a sweet core. While some portions of the book are harsh, portraying some adult characters as being very mean, the focus is more on the choices that Stanley makes and the friendship that he forms with Zero. I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 10. Why 4 stars?: I have always liked Sachar's books and this one continues in his same tradition. "Holes" is less humorous than Sachar's previous works, but it has a very important underlying message: the value of friendship. Because of its cruelty to some characters however, I would not suggest it for children younger than 10. The only reason this book lost a star is because it can be very slow at points, which may lose children's interest. But, all in all - a wonderful book!
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Holes Review: Holes is a good book. The characters are described very well. My favorite character would have to be Stanely, they give a very vivid imigage about him. It all starts out when Stanely get sent to Green Lake camp becuase he was covicted of a crime he did not do. He had a choice to either go to jail or to go to the camp. Since he had never been to camp before he decided to go there. On the first day he was assigned to dig a hole 5 feet deep and 5 feet wide. He meet up with all the other people in group E and became friends with them. One day his friend Zero ran away. No one ran after him because they knew he would have to come back in a few days. Everyone was surprised when he didn't come back after 3 days. Read the bok to find out whether he died or not. You will like the ending.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Holes Review: Holes is an amazingly good book and I enjoyed reading it. The fact that it was based on digging holes in the desert didn't impress me at first, but it keeps you interested and is definately worth reading. Holes is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who is accused of stealing tennis shoes from a famous basketball player who had donated them to raise money for the poor. He gets the choice of going to jail or Camp Green Lake. He chooses the camp with no idea what he is getting into. There is no lake, instead a vast are of desert where he and the other boys there are told to dig a hole every day to "build character". They are instructed to report anything they find while digging to the person in charge and maybe get a day off if that person likes it. When Stanley finds a piece of what looks like gold with initials carved in it a long line of events begin that keep you reading and wanting to know more about Stanley and the rest of the boys at Camp Green Lake.
