Summary: A wonderful book for young adults
Review: After being falsely accused of stealing a pair of trainers, Stanley Yelnats is sentenced to spending eighteen months at 'Camp Green Lake', a juvenile detention facility. Thinking this was a better option than jail, he waves goodbye to his parents and sets off. Immediatly it seems he has made a mistake. In the hot, dry surroundings of what used to be the largest lake in Texas, the prisoners are made to dig a hole, five feet square and deep, every day, the idea behind this unconventional treatment is that "If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy."

Blaming his misfortune on his "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather", Stanley is soon under the watchful eyes of the authoritarian Mr Sir and the creepy warden, whose main hobby is painting her nails with snake venom. Soon Stanley is losing weight, gaining self-esteem and making friends. However all is not as it seems at Camp Green Lake, and instead of digging to improve his character, Stanley must dig for the truth....

At first glance, the book appears to be a good-versus evil tale, with Stanley fighting to clear his name and escape from Camp Green Lake. However, the book is far deeper and includes events from the past, such as how the curse on the Yelnats family came about and the story of Kate Barlow. Past and present become linked after Stanley discovers treasure in the sand and escapes from Camp Green Lake with his friend Zero.

Holes is an unusual book, but is all the better for it. The plot is pretty complicated, yet the chapters are short enough to hold your attention. Characters such as Stanley, Zero and X-Ray are realistic and teenagers should find them easy to relate to. The story jumps between several different time periods, and this can become quite confusing, but overall the story is fast-paced, absorbing and interesting. One of the most fascinating young adult novels I've read in a long time.

Summary: Holes
Review: Grades 3 and up. Holes is a great book about an unlucky kid named Stanley. He is unlucky because he gets sent to a terrible camp, called Camp Green Lake, for something he didn't do. At this punishment camp, the kids who get sent there have to dig holes five feet deep and five feet wide each day. In the story, Louis Sachar also provides information about the lake before it dried up and the city around it. This information helps Stanley and his friend, Zero, eventually escape from the camp. Holes won the John Newbery Medal. and that was a grand decision. If you read Holes, I bet you will love it just as I did! Sachar has also written other great books such as the Wayside School series and There's A Boy In the Girls' Bathroom. Louis Sachar is a great author and Holes is a perfect example of his talent.

Summary: Truly Newberry Calibur work by Louis Sachar
Review: Holes deserves the Newberry Medal more than any other Newberry I have read before. The story is of a boy named Stanley who is accused of a crime he did not commit, and he is sent off to Camp Green Lake, a sort of juvenile diliquent punishment center. The punishment is that all the boys that are there have to dig a hole- 5 feet deep and five feet around the edge. Stanley learns to endure this hard work despite working out in the sun digging hard,sun-baked mud. When he cannot take the pain longer, He escapes from the camp with another camper named Zero, who was also associated with the same crime that Stanley had been sent there for. They escape to a mountain that they think holds water, a very precious, holy thing at Camp Greenlake considering that they live in a hot Texas condition where h2o is hard to find sometimes. They come back to Camp Green Lake and after a horrible incident with a poisonous kind of animal, both Stanley and Zero end up having the camp shut down by federal police because of the extreme conditions that the boys have to do their work at. An amazing read and spellbinding texture that you can almost feel when you read it. I reccomend it on all accounts.Cheers to Louis Sachar and lets hope he can write more books like this one.

Summary: Awesome Adolescent Literature!
Review: The book, Holes, by Louis Sachar is definately must read material for young adolescents. My 6th grade students have all read it, and beg for me to read it aloud to them! Its captivating chapters hold their interest until the end. The chapters are also short in length which makes this a great book for a read-aloud session.

The characters are down-to-earth, and adolescents can easily relate to them. The protagonist is Stanley, a chubby boy who is more a loner than anything. He feels others pick on him and he eludes low self esteem, but he loves his parents, and doesn't want to worry them.

Because of a crime, Stanley is sentenced to go to Camp Green Lake, a correctional facility for boys. There, he is to dig holes, which will help him build character. While at the facility, Stanley loses weight and gains strength which increases his self-esteem, learns who he can trust and how to handle unruly boys, he teaches one of the other boys to read, and meets a loyal friend.

Holes entraps the audience too by giving some fictional historical background from the past century. Camp Green Lake used to be home to the wild outlaw woman, Kissin' Kate Barlow. While digging holes and building character, Stanley and his friend discover a treasure they believe to have belonged to Kate. The problem is that while uncovering the buried treasure, they are caught by Camp Green Lake's Warden.

Read the book to find out what happens to the treasure and to Stanley and his friend!

Summary: A Perfect Read!!!!
Review: Stanley Yelnats was only trying to help his father when a shoe fell on his head and he got brought before court for stealing it. Stanley gets a choice, however, he can go to jail or he can go to Camp Green Lake, a camp for juvineile boy cirminals. That's all I will say- the rest of this superbly written book should not be given away! But there is one thing you should know- as a mystery this book is wonderful, as a novel this book is fantastic, as both, it can't be beat.

Summary: Holes
Review: I really enjoyed reading the book Holes. It was very interesting and a great story. It was about a camp called Camp Green Lake, which was a place for kids that committed small crimes. It was a lot like a detention center, but when they were there they had to dig holes. They had to dig one hole per day. The amount of time that each kid stayed was determined by what their crime was and how bad. Some of the characters are Stanley, who was the main character. He was tall and chubby and the biggest kid at the camp. Another important character was Zero. He was a little kid that was very quiet. Another character was X-ray, he was the leader of the group. He didn't like Stanley. This was a very good book I would encourage any person of any age to read this.
