Review: My 10-year-old daughter made me read this book and I am truly grateful. Stanley Yelnats has been sent to the Camp Green Lake boys' detention center for the proverbial crime he did not commit. Each day he is required to dig a hole exactly five feet wide and five feet deep, and to report anything interesting he finds. As Stanley digs his first hole and then his second, his third and so on, we learn the story of his great-great-grandfather Elya Yelnats who fell in love with Myra Menke and asked for the help of Madame Zeroni to win the young girl's hand, which may have something to do with the curse on the Yelnats family. We also learn of his great-grandfather, the first Stanley Yelnats, who lost his fortune to the famous bandit Kate Barlow somewhere near where Stanley and the others are not digging dozens of holes each day. But as we often find in literature, this is a small world and a pair of sneakers, sweet tasting onions and small lizards with exactly 11 yellow spots can be very important in the end.Louis Sachar's novel is one of those marvelous creations where everything comes together in the most delightful way. The description of the book as a puzzle is particularly apt. The situation Stanley faces is presented realistically even as the story is interwoven with fairy tale elements. This is one of those books that gets children to love reading and perhaps the best think about "Holes" is that after reading something like this, younger readers will have higher expectations for good story telling. You might not find obvious lessons to be learned from this book, since you have to fill in some holes yourself, but there is nothing wrong with the pure joy of a well-told tale.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Catcher in the Hole Review: I'd like to start off saying that I am not a huge fan of Salinger's Catcher in the Rye (it does have it's place in Literature, but that's not to be addressed here). Catcher in the Rye is supposed to be that one-great-coming-of-age stories for older teenaged boys. Holes, by the witty Sachar, is a Catcher in the Rye for younger boys just starting off into their teen years. The characters and story are whimsical and well-plotted like nothing in real life, but there is an undeniable and honest truth to the underlying theme of this story. It's a complicated tale that parents and children (male or female here) should really read together. The reading is easy enough; I don't mean "complicated" in the "hard" sense. This story just has so many wonderful overlapping layers that I could not put it down. It took me but one day to finish this book and I probably skipped a college class because I couldn't put it down. That's right, folks, I'm twenty-one and proud to admit that this is my favorite book. I only wish I had a story like this to latch onto when I was a young adolescent. Alas, we only had Catcher in the Rye, and that is not my idea of a reasonable coming-of-age story for the younger set. Holes definitely is.

Although the story sounds a bit odd, it is packed with fun and adventure. The book was about a boy named Stanley. Stanley is accused of stealing a pair of shoes and is senteced to prison or camp. Stanley chooses camp because he thinks it will be easy there. He finds out it is not. Stanley has to dig these 5 by 5 foot holes in the ground everyday. Later in the book, stanley meets a boy named Zero. Zero and Stanley become great friends. Zero wants to run away and Stanley decides to follow. Will they make it? You'll have to read to find out.

I have read this book four times, and am currently reading it to my class. Every time I read this captivating book, I discover a new detail, unearth a new `layer`that I missed on a previous reading. My students love this novel, and I especially recommend it for reluctant readers.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: You can't put it down. Review: I read this book in 3 days. It had a lot of suspense, like when Stanley found out what his family member meant by "I saw the big thumb." The characters at the camp all had nicknames. They all seemed to make friends with newcomers. I am a lot like some of the characters. It reminds me of when I have confronted the police...I would this recommend this book to middle school kids, because if you have a book report to do, it doesn't take long to read because once you get into it you can't stop or put it down.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Holes Review: Holes is about Stanley Yelnats (don't you love the way his name is spelled backwards and fowards?!) who gets sent to Camp Green Lake after being accused of stealing a pair of shoes. He meets a guy named Zero, and they become friends. After Zero runs away, Stanley also runs. This book was very good. I loved it! I like the transferring of the past and present. Stanley is a semi-boring character, but Louis Sacher makes the story interesting.

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Holes Amanda H. Review: Holes is a very good book. It is about a boy that has bad luck. He was sent to a camp for bad boys because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. My favorite part of the book is when Mr. Pendanski is introducing each of the boys for the first time. They say that their real name isn't their name and give their nicknames. The part of the book that I disliked the most is when they make fun of Zero. I recommend this book to anyone that likes comedy, mixed with adventure. The author keeps the story going at a fast pace which makes it hard to put down the book.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The diggest of diggest book Review: I suppose you ought to read Holes. It is outstanding! I like the center part. My preferred part is when it is Over and done with because Stanley is free of charge. Stanley has to dig holes 5 feet tall and five feet deep. Stanley meets another Boy named Zero. Zero gets so mad that He hits Mr. Pendancekey in the face with a shovel.
