Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Holes By Louis Sachar Review: Holes Have you ever heard of the writer Louis Sachar? If so, you probably read or heard of Johnnys in the basement, Someday Angeline or There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom. The best book written by Louis in my opinion is Holes! Holes has got in many of awards like the National Book Award. Louis's writing is made for people 10 and up. I have seen middle school kids and high school kids reading the book Holes. His writing style is very easy to understand. The dialogue is wonderful, very easy so comprehend. When you start to read the book, you start building relationships with characters. There likes and there dislikes, what their favorite thing, or color is. As for the setting Louis has mastered that too. He is very descriptive in his work. It gives you a lot of imagery when your reading. So now that you know a little about Louis's work lets talk about Holes. Stanley Yelnats was sent to camp Green Lake because of some curse. The Yelnats think it is because of his no-good-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather. Who forgot to carry Madame Zeroni up the mountain. Stanley and his family didn't have a lot of money. They lived in an apartment which smelt like stinky feet. The smell came from his father who was on the verge on end the smell of bad foot odor. Stanley was a fat kid who didn't have a lot of friend. So when he was sent to Camp Green Lake, he hoped his look would change. Stanley was put into D-tent, the first day he got off to a bad start. They say the first hole was the hardest and they where right. Stanley soon got use to the digging, he once found a fossil. The next day he found a Golden Bullet or so he thought. Zero his best friend ran away because he could not take it anymore. Stanley was really sad because Camp Green Lake is a desert, so there was no way for Zero to survive. Late that week Stanley goes and run away in search for Zero. He later finds him underneath a boat. Now you are wondering how can there be a boat. Well Green Lake use to be a Lake and a Town. Many people lived there, Sam the African American who sells sweet onions. Ms. Katherine is the white teacher in the school house. Sam and Katherine fell in love and kiss. Back in the day that was not allowed so Sam was killed. Ever since then it has not rained, so Green Lake dried up and everyone moved away. As for Ms. Katherine she was known as Kissing Kate Barlow. Kate robbed everyone and every bank including Stanleys Great Grandfather she left him stranded in the desert they say he found refuge on gods thumb..So back to Stanley and Zero they saw Gods Thumb and decided to climb up, they finally made it and on top they found sweet onions. So a couple days past and Stanley was feeling pretty lucky. He wanted to dig one more hole, to see if they could find where Kissing Kate Barlows money, Did they find the money? Did Stanley become a millionaire? Did Stanley make it back to Camp Green Lake Safely? Well I'm sorry but I can not tell you. You need to read the book. It is one of my favorites and I hope it is yours too.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Holes: A childrens book that every age will enjoy Review: Holes is a timeless classic that everyone from your daughter to your grandmother will enjoy. The book is about a young boy named Stanley Yelnats who just cannot seem to fit in. He constantly seems to find himself at the wrong place at the wrong time. It was this unfortunate plight which got him sent to Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake is a camp designed for troubled young men. At first Stanley finds it hard to fit in with the boys who were actually sent to camp for commiting a crime, unlike Stanley. His only knowledge about Camp Green Lake was that: His rich grandfather was robbed by Kate Barlow and stranded there, and that it used to be a town and lake. Camp Green Lake belives that " if you take a bad boy and make him dig all day in the hot sun it turns him into a good boy" so that is just what the boys did. One of Stanleys first days digging he came upon a lipstick tube with the initials KB on it. He later realized that the lipstick tube infact belonged to the infamous Kate Barlow who had robbed his rich grandfather. The story also gets thrown for a twist when you find out that all of Stanley's misfortunes were infact due to a curse because of his great great pig stealing grandfather. The only way Stanley can lift this curse is by carrying up his new friend from camp Zero up atop a mountain and letting him drink from the stream. Upon doing this he feels a certain sense of relief and decides to investigate where he found the lipstick tube. Him and Zero dig where the lipstick tube was found and uncovered Stanleys grandfathers missing fortune. The camp was also running using child labor and was later shut down. Although I failed to mention all the funny suprises and hidden themes this book as you can see is a must read. And if the millions of copies its' sold doesn't convince you then maybe the fact it was made into a major motion picture will. Holes is a timeless classic that every person needs to experience.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Excellent read! Review: Hero: overweight People make a lot of assumptions in life. For example, it's easy for most folks to assume that a fat kid is lazy or that he is a bully, that a small kid is timid and smart. Stanley Yelnats is fat, but he's no dummy and he's no bully. He is, however, the victim of a very small bullying child nearly every day he attends school. And one day, as he is walking beneath an overpass, a pair of sneakers literally fall upon his head and cause him to be a victim of the judicial system as well. Since his father always needs another set of stinky shoes for his foot deodorizer experiments, Stanley is excited to have a prime pair to give to him. Racing off with the shoes, the police see him running and assume he is up to no good. Sure enough, the sneakers he is carrying have been reported as stolen. They are famous footwear belonging to one Clyde "Sweet Feet" Livingston, pro baseball player and Stanley's hero. Truly, it's not Stanley's fault that he is sentenced to attend a juvenile delinquents hard labor camp. According to his family it's all because of his no good, dirty, rotten, pig stealing great great grandfather whose family, had he done what a gypsy woman once directed him to do, never would have been so cursed. While at camp Stanley has to get along with some truly rough bullies, and he has to dig a 5 x 5 hole every day in the baking hot sun while avoiding poisonous lizards, snakes, spiders, and the cruel camp staff. But for all the faculty talk that digging holes builds character, there's a distinct undercurrent that something else is going on. The warden is looking for something out there in the desert, something clearly important. And maybe, just maybe, if Stanley is the one to find it, it will be his ticket out of there. What worked for me: This well-balanced story deftly interweaves threads from the Yelnats family's past and present to keep the reader entranced and guessing. And if that isn't enough, the characters are very sympathetic; the reader would stick with the book just to find out how things turned out for them. (And to find out how the bad guys got theirs in the end.) For me as a writer, "Holes" comes under the "I wish I had written that!" heading. Size-wise Stanley was heavy and out of shape at the beginning of the story, but hard labor and minimal food trimmed him down and toughened him up a bit. What didn't work for me: The only problem I had with reading this story was that I didn't actually read it myself. I listened in as my husband read a few pages of it to our boys each night at bedtime. This meant I had to wait weeks to find out what happened because he wouldn't let me read ahead! Overall: Highly recommended to readers of all ages! If you liked "Holes" you might also enjoy "Saviors of the Bugle". Note: this book has been made into a movie. The main character is no longer fat, and indeed we do not know about Stanley's being picked on at school either. But despite trimming out a great deal of the novel and adding in a few new pieces, it still is a great story and transferred very well to visual format. Our boys loved it; but it definitely helped that we read the book first. I suggest you do the same.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Holes Review: Was'up?My name is Jeremiah. Holes takes place on the street and at Camp Green Lake. Stanley is mistaken for committing a crime, stealing shoes from a famous baseball player. Then the police catch him and send him to court. So they send him to a boot camp called Camp Green Lake where all you practically do there is dig. His family thinks it's a curse because of his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-steeling-great-great-grandfather. There he meets a lot of punks that soon turn into friends. The people's names are Zero, Magnet, Stanley, Barf-Bag, Armpit, Zig-Zag,Twitch. There are also the mean directors that are in charge of Camp Green Lake. Mr. Sir,the Warden, and Mr. Pendanski. All these people hate the weird directors. Later in the story Stanley and Zero discover that Stanley's ancestors one time were here by discovering a treasure chest with Stanley's name carved in it. I think this book is fascinating because of the author's style, it makes you wonder what's gonna' happen next, and it has suspense, action, and adventure. There's also a movie about this book. This book is realistic fiction. I hope you enjoy this fascinating book. You've got to read this book!!!!
