Rating: Summary: The Hand of Fate Review: This is a very clever novel. It shows extraordinary skill in melding together a number of diverse story lines, each of which is interesting in its own right. It contains a number of interesting characters; in particular, Stanley and Zero as well as Sam and Kissin' Kate.Unfortunately, there are certain things about this book that rub me the wrong way. Mainly, I don't believe much of what happens in this novel could happen. It pretends to be a realistic novel but a lot happens here which I don't find to be very real. My main problem is that all of the action has a driving force of fate or destiny. This kind of active destiny is just not something I believe in and so it interfered with my enjoyment of the book. Don't misunderstand: this is a very good book and well worth the read. For me, however, it will never be one of the best of the Newbery winners.
Rating: Summary: masterfully crafted and beautiful messages Review: I resisted reading this book because it sounded depressing, but I finally read it and what a wonderful surprise! I stayed up the whole night to finish it and didn't want it to end. The book is like a big jigsaw puzzle in the way that the author feeds you one mysterious tidbit at a time through dialogue and flashbacks; you are constantly thinking and wondering during the whole book. And the clues eventually pay off in a deeply satisfying way because the ending is poignant and lovely too. This book hits all the right notes and never downgrades to a lower level, just because it's for kids. I can't wait to read it again.
Rating: Summary: Not the best book ever... Review: OPINION: My freind reccomended this novel to me about amonth ago, she told me "You'll love it", I did, but not as much as she. I hope you'll ignore all the five-star raves that most people are giving this book, the only reason there are so many people who are saying it's the best book they have ever read, is because they were forced to read it in school, and it's the only book they have ever read. It is NOT an epic, for those of you who are real readers, you will find this book to be OK, but not great. WHAT IS THIS BOOK ABOUT???!?!?: Holes starts out with a boy, Stanly Yelnats, who is wrongly accused of stealing shoes and sent to a kind of boot camp for boys. In the boot camp the Stanly, and the other boys are forced to dig holes everyday...later on in the book you find out why the warden of the camp forces them to digs holes, and what the warden is looking for, read this book to find out, you won't be dissapointed...If this is the first book you've ever read (that is the case for most kids reviewing on this book) it will be the best, if it's not the first book you have ever read it will be OK but not great and not worthy of all the hype it's recieved. ....
Rating: Summary: Good, But Kind of Babyish Review: ... I noticed that this book is recommended for people 9-12. I agree. It was a good book; lots of excitement, sprinkled with a little humor, but not really a story that you can relate to in any way. Not a lot of people can say, "Oh, I've been to a camp before where I had to dig holes." What saved me from giving Holes three stars was the adorable Zero. He becomes a close friend of Stanley in the novel and is definitely one of the cutest characters I've ever read about. The plot is also off-beat and different. 9-12 year olds will probably love it, but I don't think teenagers will like it as much.
Rating: Summary: holes a very interesting book Review: Holes is a ver y inter esting book
Rating: Summary: Great book for people of all ages Review: This book is about a boy named Stanley, who is falsely accused of stealing shoes, and is sent to a Camp. The camp is at a dried up lake, and boys who have committed crimes go there. They have to dig one hole every day. Stanley meets some other guys, and they become friends. He even starts teaching Zero how to read. There are some pretty interesting things that start to happen to Stanley, when Zero runs off and he goes to find him. There is a lot of irony towards the end of the book, and it was really fun to read. The ending is really surprising, too. This was a great book.
Rating: Summary: Great story & well written! Review: Louis Sachar's "Holes" is a story of a boy wrongly convicted of stealing shoes who is sent to a remote desert prison to dig for a rare treasure. Sachar's main character, Stanley Yelnats, is a teen whom the writer expouses learned ambition, fears, and talents of his childhood. Young teens will enjoy this book because it's never boring. The writer has a talent for keeping the storyline moving in many forms. The writer's character development is impressive and plot very addictive. This book is never boring. This books is a must buy for the teen (and who think they're teens) crowd. Easy to read and surprisingly very intriguing. A very good book!
Rating: Summary: the best book Review: Holes is a great book I read it in 3 hours then I gave it to my mom to read.
Rating: Summary: this is the best book ever!!!... Review: this book was very intriguing to me and i really liked it because it was very challenging and gave me alot to think about when I am making the connections. Rating: Summary: Holes Review: Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Stanley gets accused of a crime that he didn't commit and now has a choice of going to Camp Green Lake or to jail. Stanley's family is poor so they decide to send him to Camp Green Lake. But when Stanley arrives there is no lake but boys digging holes exactly five feet deep and five feet wide. The warden says the boys are digging holes to build character but they are really looking for something. But what? Read the book and find out.
