Rating: Summary: "Holes" Review: Holes is the best book I've ever read! The book is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats. He is convicted of stealing a famous baseball player's shoes from an auction for poor children. He can chose between going to jail or going to Camp Green Lake, a correctional facility. He choses to go to Camp Green Lake. There they say that a bad boy who digs a hole every day will turn into a good boy, but Stanly thinks they're making them dig for another reason. Some of the characters are Mr.Pendanckey, who is the group counselor, Mr.Sir a very mean man who works there and says "Your not in the Girl Scouts." The boys there have nicknames, some of them are Zero, Magnet, and Zigzag. They stand up for Stanly at different times in the story. This is the best book I've ever read!
Rating: Summary: Holes-Louis Sachar Review: This book was pretty good, what i expecially like about all Louis Sachar's books is the humor, almost all of his books make me cry from laughing... Recomended...
Rating: Summary: Holes sink Review: I recently bought 4 copies of this book to pass out to friends and family. I first read it a year ago and can't forget it. I live in Texas, so the setting really appealed to me. The story is funny, sad, joyous, violent, and heart-warming. I don't like violence, but the rest of the qualities sure did appeal to me. I couldn't put this book down. My 12 year step-daughter read it in 2 days (she was bored). The humor of Holes creeps into your brain when you're not paying attention! For instance, I hate onions, but they are so central to this story! I actually appreciated the onion. You might be in a professional meeting and recognize a character from the story in your midst!! I think it should be required reading at the high-school or college level when one has the maturity to appreciate Sachar's humor.
Rating: Summary: Spotted Lizards Review: I loved this book. There was lots of suspense and some humor. I think the lizards are kind of scary. Overall this was a great book. My whole class loves it.
Rating: Summary: Wow, Amazing Review: Hi, My mom bought me this book and as I judged this book from its title I didn't feel like reading it. I thought this was a boring book and a totally disgraceful book for little kids, as I had read the first few pages. But, then as I had to write a book report for my school I didn't know which book to write on. So, I chose this book "Holes" I started reading this book as I finished dinner, I couldn't stop. I kept on going and going and felt reading more and more. And I couldn't control myself. This is a very amazing book and it shows a great deal about friendship and how onions are good for your blood. And I would also like to tell everyone not to judge a book by its title or cover.
Rating: Summary: existentialism for kids ? Review: Stanley Yelnats is a boy who is being punished as a result of the gypsy curse laid on his "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather." He's sent to Camp Green Lake for stealing a pair of sneakers, though he claims they actually fell at his feet from out of the sky. Stanley is innocent enough to think that Camp will be interesting, but soon finds himself digging five by five foot holes in a blazing sun. He's surrounded by a gang of unpleasant fellow inmates with colorful nicknames and the whole place is overseen by a Warden who paints her nails with rattlesnake venom. Intertwined with Stanley's story is that of his pig-thieving forbear and Kate Barlow, the Kissing Bandit.Sachar has said his story was influenced by The Princess Bride, which is evident in the wordplay and in a certain fairy tale quality. But where Princess Bride drew on everything from Pirate movies to Sword and Sorcery pulps, and followed conventional heroic adventure format, Sachar's plot is drawn more from American tall tales, like Pecos Bill, and, strangely enough for a children's book, such movies as Cool Hand Luke and such existentialist dilemmas as The Myth of Sisyphus. Fate and doom seem to loom over the Yelnats family generally and Stanley in particular, though by story's end justice has been meted out, rather suddenly, to all concerned. The reviews I've read have been uniformly favorable, even ecstatic, with many reviewers suggesting that even adults will enjoy the book. But I didn't like it all that much. If there's anything sillier than the idea that existence consists of mere drudgery (Existentialism) it would be that the drudgery is followed, arbitrarily, by a balancing of the cosmic scales. Personally, I find the view that life is absurd to be morally corrosive and I'd just as soon not have my kids fall prey to such beliefs. Of course, I'm a crotchety old man; this'll probably be their favorite book. GRADE : C-
Rating: Summary: best book Review: Holes was the most exciting, realistic and un-put-down-able book I ever read. It deserves 10 stars and it won the Newbury Award for a good reason.
Rating: Summary: Amazing plot; social commentary; one of the best books ever! Review: I was bored yesterday, and i went over to my 14 year old sister's bookshelf (I'm almost 18) and looked around for an easy read that would be interesting. Fortunately, my eye happened to fall on "Holes". She had said it was a good book before, so i took it back to my room... I picked it up, started reading, and couldn't stop reading until I was done. I even gave up homework and other priorities to finish this book, it was so suspenseful and amazingly written. It was definitely one of the best books I have ever read. I only expect the best from Louis Sachar, as his Wayside School books were hilarious and well written, but Holes pushed the limits on so many levels. I wouldn't even consider it a childrens' book for a second. Every passage holds criticisms of society, satire of certain types of people that exist in our lives... and the plot is so well done. I found myself exclaiming out loud "no WAY..." when another twist of fate brought loose ends of the plot together in a crazy coincidence. and I was crying for nearly half of this book. after i was done reading, it had drained me so much emotionally and all i could think about was the story. I am writing this now to get it out of my system, though i really enjoy analyzing "Holes". You all must think I'm insane, but if you do anything, GO READ THIS BOOK. it's well worth it. other books i recommend - "The red tent" - Anita diamant "The handmaid's Tale" - Margaret Atwood And i feel just as strongly about these two... don't get me started
Rating: Summary: A well written book Review: Having seen "Holes", by Louis Sachar in many classrooms, I was drawn to read it. I am glad I did. Holes is the story of Stanley Yelnats who seems to have inherited some rather bad luck. It is a story of self discovery with a little family history thrown in. As much as the story, however, I enjoyed the craft of the book. Mr. Sachar has written a 'textbook' book, with foreshadowing, irony and enough twists and turns to make you forget you are reading this 'for school'. He gives a lot to discuss as well as a lot to savor! I was as pleased with the way this book was written as I was with the story itself. Read it for fun if you don't have to read it 'for school'! PS. If you like this one, try "A Separate Peace" by John Knowles, another book I had to read 'for school' that I just loved!
Rating: Summary: Holes Summary Review: The story Holes is about a young boy named Stanley Yelnats who is a poor kid from the inner city. Stanleys family has a histroy of bad luck, so he is not too dicouraged when he is wrongfully accused of steeling a a pair of five thousand dollar shoes. He is given a option to goto a detention center insted of jail, he takes it and soon he is off to camp green lake. That is what I guess you chould say sets up the story for the action and suspence. I think the author did a very good job of blending tall tale into this story. This book is a quick good read, I recomend this book to anyone who is interested in young adult books.
