Rating: Summary: Shawshank Redemption for teens? Review: Although I'm outside the demographic for Louis Sachar's "Holes," I really enjoyed this book. It's a well-paced page-turner that will have you waiting for the next twist. The basic premise is that unlucky, possibly cursed, Stanley Yelnats, is sentenced to juvenile correction at Camp Green Lake after a pair of shoes falls out of the sky and hits him on the head. Camp Green Lake turns out to be a huge desert, and at the work camp, he and the other kids are forced to dig a hole each day, five feet deep and five feet in diameter. Oh, and since they're in Texas, there are tarantulas, scorpions and the dreaded spotted yellow lizards. The modern story with the young teens alternates with that of Stanley's Latvian ancestor, Elya, who was cursed by Madama Zeroni for failing to fulfill a promise. There's also the tale of the bandit, "Kissin" Kate Barlow, who was originally a schoolteacher that fell in love with Sam, the onion farmer who happened to be of a different race than her. Of course, we want to know why the kids have to dig these holes and how all of the various elements will be tied together and why the Warden is so obsessed with this place. I won't give away any spoilers here. The story, while humorous, also features some dark sides, such as the prejudice of the original inhabitants of Green Lake. There are also moments of tension and cruelty between the various "campers" that would probably be typical of teens in this situation. The villains are larger than life, the dastardly Mr. Sir and the flame-haired Warden, which suits a book for this age group. Sachar succeeds in blending the teenage incarceration story with the various tall tale elements in a fascinating story of coincidence, magical destiny and redemption. Both Stanley and fellow camper Zero undergo growth, so there is character development as well. There's also a feature length film, which follows the story fairly closely. I recommend this book, as well as the film, and would read it again. I'm holding on to my copy to give my son when he's old enough to read it.
Rating: Summary: Digging Up Holes in The Pages Reading The Book Over and Over Review: I suggest anyone who likes adventure, comedy, and drama to read this book! I've never seen the movie but I suggest you read the book first. I saw the previews for the movie and thought it looked horrible, but the book, is one of the best books I've ever read! I love how it all connects in the end (PART THREE), and how Zero and Stanley are happy in the end. So, go out and buy that book!
Rating: Summary: A Hole A Day Keeps The Warden Away! Review: Do you have a no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather? Stanley Yelnats does, and it is because of him that his family is cursed. As you read Holes by Louis Sachar, you will learn of a promise broken many years back, by Stanley's heartbroken ancestor. It is because of that broken pledge that Stanley must dig a hole a day while at Camp Green Lake. Louis Sachar is a very popular children's author with such novels as There's A Boy In The Girl's Bathroom, Dog's Don't Tell Jokes, and the Wayside School Is Falling Down. He seems to connect with his readers by hitting their funny bone. Although Holes contains many humorous moments it also carries along the theme of believing in the good of yourself and others. Many may become frustrated when trying to keep straight all the flashbacks in Holes but it is those flashbacks which gives this Newbery winner the spice it needs to make it a page turner. Grandparents to the very young, who need to follow along on audiotape, will be captivated by the way Louis Sachar is able to entwine the lives of so many characters and continuously create suspense. Will you have to dig a hole a day because of a past relative?

Rating: Summary: Digging Up Those Holes................... Review: Do you like digging holes? I sure don't, but in this book Stanley Yelnats, the main charater, is convicted of a crime that he really didn't do and has to go to Camp Green Lake to dig holes as punishment. "Holes" is a great fiction book telling two stories at once. Stanley, also known as the "Caveman", is sent to Camp Green Lake a correctional facility for Juvinile Delinquents where he is to dig a hole each day 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep. The story has new funny events every day as Stanley and his friends dig in the hot blood boiling sun. Days have gone by and Stanley finds something, something nice! I recommend this book to all children and adults that like nice twisting stories.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've ever read Review: Holes is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who was accused of stealing a famous basketball player's shoes. But he was in the wrong place at the wrong time (as always). Then his parents are so mad because he keeps doing stuff that is really bad or at least that's what his parents think. Every night he prays that his mean grandpa who cursed the family had never been there. So his parents send him to a camp called Camp Green Lake. The only thing that the kids do there is dig holes. They do it so that they can clear their minds and be better children. But Stanley isn't like that, he isn't bad so he doesn't fit in. All the others are really bad and he doesn't know what to do. He writes to his mom everyday (but he stays away from the boys because they will tease him). I thought it was a great book and the author really put a lot of feeling into the book. I would suggest it to kids 9 and older. It was a sad book at times. Holes was a great book and I brought it all over the place so I could read it. The author Louis Sachar is a great story writer and I intend to read more of his books, so should You!!
