Summary: Two Great Stories in One
Review: The pace of this book was perfect for young readers. I was impressed by Sachar's skill in using parallel story lines in a way that was interesting, complex, yet easily followed even by less experienced readers. I found the story especially appealing because the main character, Stanley, is easily imagined. He is overweight and not especially popular. Sachar does a good job of identifying Stanley as an outsider with whom most kids will identify without dwelling on the reasons for this. Stanley's unfortunate situation is truly beyond his control, but the choices he makes in the book allow him to change the course of events and teach some lessons about character.
Camp Green Lake and the circumstances that surround Stanley are contemporary and fairly realistic. However, some fantastic elements come in the form of a parallel story that is presented to the reader about Kissin' Kate Barlow and the way things were years ago at the camp Stanley now attends. The book switches between the two times artfully and each storyline contributes to and forms a smooth transition to the other.
Readers are given opportunity to practice making predictions and connections within the book. I found reading this book to be very enjoyable, and was more than satisfied at the end when Sachar neatly fills in most of the "holes" I was not able to alone.

Summary: No Holes in This Book
Review: I give the book Holes, by Louis Sacher five stars. Stanley Yelnats, the main character, has bad luck following him wherever he goes. Stanley winds up in the wrong place at the wrong time and gets accused of a time he did not commit. He is given the choice to either go to jail or a boy's juvenile detention camp, Camp Green Lake. He chooses camp. Soon Stanley finds out that there is no lake to swim in and there will be no fun at all. As a punishment everyday Stanley will have to dig a hole, five feet wide in all directions and five feet deep. The people who work at camp say that digging builds character. Stanley knowns that their must be some other reason why they are digging. But why? -J.A.

Summary: Holes by Louis Sachar
Review: Stanley Yelnats was given a choice, jail or Camp Green Lake. A
camp. Just think of it as a big summer camp full of bad kids. At least that's what Stanley thought after being prosecuted for stealing Clyde Livingston's prize shoes. As soon as he gets to Camp Green Lake he knows that this will be a very long and strenuous 18 months. Digging holes five feet deep five feet wide was not Stanley's favorite pass time especially since he was over weight. During the book Stanley meets some very interesting characters that teach him a lot about life and how to not take even the littlest things for granted and how important your family is. To me Holes was an easy read that really dragged me into the story. Holes would be a great summer read for third graders and up.

Summary: Imagine digging a huge hole everyday!
Review: Are you looking for a breath taking realistic fiction book? Then you're looking for Holes by Louis Sachar. The main character's name is Stanley Yelnats whose great great grandfather was cursed and the curse will carry on for all his younger generations. Stanley is about eleven years old and he has been sent to Camp Green Lake because he was accused for stealing a pair of shoes, which belonged to a basketball star. This story takes place at Camp Green Lake, which is a boy's detention camp. Every day the boys have to dig a hole exactly five feet deep and five feet wide. Here the boys only get four minutes of shower!! Camp Green Lake isn't a lake but it was a lake, now it's just a dry piece of land with dozens of holes!! It never rains there. If you ever try to escape, people say you'd be buzzard food in days. Stanley realizes that the warden is looking for something. If any boy digs up something the warden finds interesting, he gets the whole day off. Stanley tries to dig up what the warden wants but his hands ache a lot. His friend escapes and Stanley thinks he's buzzard food. He also escapes to find his friend. He hopes he'll find what the warden wants out there and return with his friend before they're buzzard food. When they return, there are even more tragic problems that will happen. My reason for recommending this book is because it was so interesting, I couldn't put down the book down.

Summary: Help! I Am a Prisoner at Camp Green Lake
Review: Holes by Louis Sachar is a realistic fiction book for tireless people because Stanley, the main character, has to dig a hole that is 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide everyday. Stanley Yelnats is as fat as a huge pumpkin; in fact, he's the heaviest in his class! He's also imaginative because he thought he was cursed. Louis Sachar chose Camp Green Lake that used to be Green Lake, Texas, for the setting but now it is a dry, flat wasteland. Stanley was sent to the Camp, which trained bad boys to good boys through doing hard labor. He met a friend Zero in Camp Green Lake who dug the fastest hole. The three most interesting parts were, firstly, that Stanley finally found out that Zero couldn't read a single word on his letters when he has been scolding his friend all the while. Secondly, I like the way Louis Sachar describes Stanley's first day digging a humongous hole five feet tall and five feet wide, it was so real as if I was there. Thirdly, Zero ran away and Stanley ran after him for fear that he might be eaten by creatures or die of thirst. Fortunately, Zero found food and survived. I would recommend this book to anyone alive because even an adult would think it was fabulous. It has a bit of everything like animals, punishment, other people's personality and fantasy and one more very good reason is because Louis Sachar told two stories at once and it succeeded. I hope you like the book because I did!

Summary: Holes - The Review
Review: I think that Stanley is worth a million dollars. He doesn't require much. You only need to take care of him. He is a good hearted kid with good motives. He only wants a loving and caring family. In Stanley's past he was wrongly accused for stealing a famous baseball players sneakers. He was sent to Camp Green Lake. That is a amp were kids who do wrong things are sent to to dig holes. He new that he did not steal the shoes. But the judge did not believe him. But really he did not steal the shoes. It turned out that his best friend at camp green lake had stole the shoes. Zero is the kid who really stole the shoes and threw them of a bridge to escape being arrested. But that is another story. I would give his story a five of five. His story was so good, he got it published. .... This book is for all ages. I would recommend this book for 10 year old kids. They will have a blast reading this book. And if your child does not like to read, this is the book to get. This book won a Newbery. So if you think that this book is bad, you need to get some new medicine. I almost "cry" when I think of the helpless Stanley at the hot, gloomy Camp Green Lake.So go to your local book story now ...
