Summary: This is a wonderful, suspenseful book.
Review: This was a simply wonderful book! It was wonderfully written, had good descriptions, and kept my interest. I couldn't put it down. It also informed me about the life of Edgar Allan Poe, and encouraged me to read Poe's works.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Inaccuracy Kills Book
Review: Pardon my diatribe, but this book is the worst historical fiction ever written. Anyone even vaguely familiar with Poe's life with be appalled at the grossly negligent treatment of him as a drunk without a single moral in his being. Avi can't ever seem to hold a thought together, and relies heavily on the descriptions of Poe, appearing every other page, emptying a bottle. "Poe" in this book should not be confused with the real Poe. And I suggest for better reading to check out something written BY Poe.

Summary: The Man Who Was Poe was an Outstanding book
Review: I think that The Man Who Was Poe was an excellent book written by the outstanding athor AVI. In the book, he left plenty of cliff hangers and things that you had to read on to find out about. So it was a really hard book to put down. I would recomend this book to anyone who likes readings mystery books. I think it would please any one who read it. If possible e-mail me telling me what you thought of the book. Thanks Beth

Review: The Man Who Was Poe

Have you ever read a book by Avi? I just read a book called The Man Who Was Poe by him, and it's awesome!
This book takes place in Providence, Rhode Island. The problem is, Edmund, who is also the main character, can't find his Sis, or Aunty Pru! He goes out to look for them and finds a man who says his name is Mr. Dupin. But, it makes you wonder, is his name really Mr. Dupin, or is he disguising himself? Dupin decides to help Edmund find Sis and Aunty Pru.
I would recommend this book for people who like mystery (and murder). This book is a bit like the Charlie Bone series without any magic.
To find out if Edmund finds who he's looking for, and to see if Dupin is telling the whole truth, read this amazing book, The Man Who Was Poe.

Summary: The Man Who Was Poe
Review: The Man Who Was Poe had an excellent story line, and is a good choice for young readers. It incorporates some of Poe's literary work and his actual life. Edmund, the main character, is a 12-year-old boy living in Providence, RI (like many other Avi books.) His mom, aunt, and sister are missing. Edmund finds help from the famous Edgar Allan Poe. The plot is complex; using many twists and turns to keep the readers attention. I listened to the audio book; the reader, George Guidall, is great and easy to follow. I recommend the book, and the reader to all young adults.

Summary: Alone and Scared
Review: I read this book after having read 12-13 of Poe's most popular short stories. I found the story to be frustrating at times due to Dupin's/Poe's erratic behavior. But if in fact Poe was like that in person, then Avi was just pointing out the effect of alcohol on a brilliant mind. It was interesting to see a writing genius having people problems, and slightly annoying to see him constantly raising Edmund's hopes and then thrashing him verbally as if he was not important at all. The story has a good ending and it made the journey worthwhile. I am homeschooling my sophomore son, and he just finished all of Poe's short stories. This story is next since he will have a little down time before we tackle "Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde".

Summary: AWESOME BOOK
Review: When I read the back of this book, I thought it an interesting premise. The mystery element sounded interesting and I thought that it's purpose might be to get younger readers interested in the works of Edgar Allan Poe, which is a very noble pursuit, considering all the junk kids read nowadays. However, when I look back on the book now, I think it was actually meant to keep kids away from Poe. Why? I don't know. Poe is truly one of the greatest authors of all time. In defense of Avi, I enjoyed his other books. But, he falls short here. Poe is portrayed as crazy and evil. In the end, he is as much a villian as the true criminals. And, I found the sudden switch from dark and gloomy to a sudden happy ending out of place. It held my attention, but left me unsatisfied. My advice: READ SOME REAL POE!
