Rating: Summary: The Man Who Was Poe Review: The reason why I rated this book this way is because this is the kind of stuff I like to read. I like the books of suspenseful story of murder, dark deeds and diappearance. I don't usually read books, but when I was in 7th grade I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. Since 7th grade I have been doing this book, as a report for four years. The real reason why I read this is because I like to read Edger Allen Poe books. I told my teacher that I liked Edger Allen Poe and he suggested that I should read The Man Who Was Poe. Thats how I got started on this book. This book kept me in my seat every second.
Rating: Summary: No wonder Avi is the newbery honor author Review: The man who was poe is a fantastic, mysterious, suspenseful, and is a bonechilling story. It has some murder in it but that's what makes it so terrifying, as it should be, because all stories are about or by Edgar A. Poe are meant to not want to be alone or be in the dark. It's just the storie's nature. If you the reader enjoy solving mysteries you should take a look at this book, because at the beggining everything is a mystery including the characters, only until you actually get to know them by reading about their tragic conflicts and who they really are, then you can know who you can really trust. Solving the mystery is only half the fun of reading ''The man who was poe.'' I gave this book five stars and I think you should be able to add more stars because I want to add more! Well... atleast I gave it the max. This book is about Edgar A. Poe and how he helps Edmund find his loved ones. Both characters evolve throughout the story and wind up not seeing each other ever again, Edmund found out that Mr.Poe was only helping him, because he wanted to make a story out of Edmund's worries and problems. But at last Edmund infuriates and dismantles Mr.Poe's story and Mr.Poe just gives up on writting his story. What is also fantastic about this book is that it is also educational, because at the end of all the chapters there is a section on Edgar A. Poe's life and I found it satisfying to know more than I already know. I recommend this book to anyone that can handle a little murder, but even though it gave me goosebumps I loved reading this book and I think it is the best book I have read in a while. I'm just saying that if you want to read a good book for fun, book reports, or any other project I recommend ''The man who was poe'', because I assure you it will keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting to learn more about the story.
Rating: Summary: It was Great! Review: I thought that "The man who was Poe" was a great book. A lot of it was very mysterious, some of it was sad, and some of it was kind of creepy. One of the myserious parts was when Dupin, the detective, investigates the bank safe that gold was stolen from. Then Dupin notices a piece of string on the floor. He assumes it isn't evidence, but then he finds out that there is an air vent on the roof just big enough for a child to fit in. Next, he finds out that the string is actually rope and that a kidnapped child was forced down the air vent to steal the gold. Dupin also finds out that the child is the sister of Edmund, who is the eleven year old main character of the book. One of the saddest parts was when Edmund's aunt was murdered, as well as when his sister was kidnapped by his stepfather. Then, when his life seems almost hopeless, he meets Mr. Dupin. One of the creepiest parts of the book is when Dupin is in the graveyard, the door to teh mausoleum opens and a strange woman comes out asking, "Where are my children?" One of the books that this book reminds me of is called Crispin the Cross of Lead, another one of Avi's books. Also, the Sherlock Holmes mysteries are similar to this book. What I enjoyed most about this book was the surprise ending. I would give anyone a recommendation to read this book.
Rating: Summary: pretty good book Review: I think that this book should get 4 stars because it was a very mysterious. When I read a bit of the book, I wanted to read more to solve a mystery, but when you solve one it leads to another so basically, it is an addictive book and really scary. The setting is usually dark night or foggy day so white hair is very creepy, and it was located in a cemetary when a squalor lady who is believed to be dead approaches Dupin and askes for her children. The reason I didn't add an extra star was because it was long and took a while to finish. It also gave me nightmares. So deducing it down to a conclusion, this basically is a pretty good book except for the length of the book.
Rating: Summary: Exciting as reading a dictionary Review: I personally like Avi. He is a wonderful writer but WHOAAA this is his worst piece. The book had confusing things going on and too many characters and confusing names that I just could keep up and also it was very boring. Is this suppose to be a suspence thriller, or mystery, or a funny book? I dont know what the heck it is. DONT READ THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU WAN TO WASTE GOOD TWO HOURS!
Rating: Summary: Poe Review Review: I think The Man Who Was Poe was an excelent book for adults and Pre-Teens. When you are reading you don't want to put it down. As you are reading there are some spine chilling moments, but there is a mysteries around every corner. I don't really like scary books to tell you the truth, but this was spectactular! Every chapter you read there is at least a couple new mysteries. I addmit some of the people in the book are a bit odd, but they also would act very smart in some situations. Even though I said this book was great I would only give it 3 because sometimes the book gets a bit scary , and sometimes it was hard to keep track of what was going on. Other wise I would give it 5 stars. I would not reccomend it for little children one because it would be too hard for them to read and two because they might get frightened. And, that is what I think about The Man Who Was Poe By: Avi
Rating: Summary: What I thought About this Review Review: I thought that the Man Who Was Poe was thrilling and mysterious. It scared me when I read it at night sometimes.I gave this book 4 stars and not 5 because it confused me sometimes, like the way Poe reacted in the book. At first he was Dupin and then when he wrote he turned into Poe. In his book he also wanted Sis to die and that made me confused because I thought he wanted to help Edmund find Sis! Besides that, I thought this book was really good and Avi is an excellent writer.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME BOOK Review: The Man Who Was PoeHave you ever read a book by Avi? I just read a book called The Man Who Was Poe by him, and it's awesome! This book takes place in Providence, Rhode Island. The problem is, Edmund, who is also the main character, can't find his Sis, or Aunty Pru! He goes out to look for them and finds a man who says his name is Mr. Dupin. But, it makes you wonder, is his name really Mr. Dupin, or is he disguising himself? Dupin decides to help Edmund find Sis and Aunty Pru. I would recommend this book for people who like mystery (and murder). This book is a bit like the Charlie Bone series without any magic. To find out if Edmund finds who he's looking for, and to see if Dupin is telling the whole truth, read this amazing book, The Man Who Was Poe. by: Rachel Carlson

Rating: Summary: So much potential Review: When I read the back of this book, I thought it an interesting premise. The mystery element sounded interesting and I thought that it's purpose might be to get younger readers interested in the works of Edgar Allan Poe, which is a very noble pursuit, considering all the junk kids read nowadays. However, when I look back on the book now, I think it was actually meant to keep kids away from Poe. Why? I don't know. Poe is truly one of the greatest authors of all time. In defense of Avi, I enjoyed his other books. But, he falls short here. Poe is portrayed as crazy and evil. In the end, he is as much a villian as the true criminals. And, I found the sudden switch from dark and gloomy to a sudden happy ending out of place. It held my attention, but left me unsatisfied. My advice: READ SOME REAL POE!
